Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 3.12 – 9.12.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Have a great week, everyone! I’ve chosen Chanel No.5: I love how its cutrus top notes sparkle when it’s cold (must be of the few things I enjoy about cold weather, lol!).

  2. I might just spend a week in my decants. I need to use them before they evaporate. Gris Clair for me. It’s unseasonably warm and no snow so that makes me happy.

  3. My SOTD today and most of last week has been Mancera – Cedrat Boise. I love the spicy kick it has and it just projects like crazy when your in the sun.

  4. Yves Rocher Nuit Vanille which is their holiday release this year. Spur of the moment purchase when ordering some shower gels for gifts. Simple, vanilla with some very light citrus and spices. Pretty soft and I’m not expecting a lot of longevity. I may use it more as a pillow/room spray!

  5. No scent this morning, I went to a half-day conference which my colleagues had organised in celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Some good stories showing that inclusion in education and in the workplace is possible.

Now working from home for some hours, I’m in a cloud of Dior Ambre Nuit. I nipped into Aesop on the way home to buy a tube of body cream, a Christmas present for someone. Floor so slippery that I totally lost focus, forgot to ask if they have perfumes (I think so?). Anyway, the smell of incense was quite overwhelming, I could hardly tell the different liquid hand soaps apart. I think they have another store, newer, at some other address, so I’ll try that next time.

  7. Hello All. Have been missing the chat. I’ve not got my emails sorted out yet, but jumped on here via facebook. I just want to say to Diana that the Christmas card arrived…THANK YOU. Melanie, I thunked the sample of Dirty Ginger yesterday. Last night I went out with a dear friend for dinner and chose to wear Diva. I had 2 compliments… one from my friend ,and a waitress, who said ‘ You smell elegant ‘ Can’t complain.

  10. Hello All. I didn’t wear any scent yesterday.. Tuesday. I opened my perfume drawers and samples boxes quite a few times and just stared lol… I couldn’t choose, so nothing.
I’m heading out soon and I’m going to thunk the sample of Erawan

  11. Gee the week gets away from me quickly sometimes.

On Monday I was movoing boxes around in a storeroom and found a carton of fragrances that I hadn’t opened since we moved in March. Some very nice things inside, and /i went straight for L’Artisan’s Coeur de Vetiver Sacre.

Also on Monday I got another nice surprise: a parcel of samples from Portia! (Thank you). So I thought I would try these out over the rest of the week.

Tuesday was Cuir Amethyste. I had a small decant of this before and this had the same impression. It’s an elegant and discreet leather, but I don’t get much in the way of violets off it. If I’m going to wear a floral leather, I’m probably going to choose Heeley’s Cuir Pleine Fleur.

Today I am wearing Jessica Mauboy Be Beautiful. I can’t say that I’m into celebrity scents; the only one I’ve ever bought was a vintage Passion for Men. BB is the real deal if you want to smell like watery cucumbers, otherwise I’d look elsewhere. Tonight I am going to a Christmas party and will be wearing Cartier XII; I have high hopes for that one.

  14. Oh man it is hot (worse coming tomorrow, though). I’m wearing Chanel Boy. It’s held up well in the heat, but I’m not sure this particular floral does it for me. Maybe something to do with the heliotrope, doubling down on tonka and vanilla; perhaps just a bit sweet for my tastes.

  16. It’s gonna to very hot here today – gone for L’Art Mure et Musc. Too warm already this morning. And struggling to find a summer top that’s not too squeezy, nor looks like last season. Oh well, least I know I smell amazing! Sending cool thoughts to my fellow APJers who are also going to be rather toasty today. Hurry up cool change 😎 Hang in there Jyotsna xx

  17. No frag to work today Luckily I have a few EBPs in my office, so could spray some Petit Matin before heading for physio and some exercise. I find the computerised rower motivational, but confess I would rather have been to the pool.

Yesterday Le Labo Iris 39 for an early morning breakfast meeting about our anti-discrimination legislation, very refreshing meeting people from both public and private sector.

Lots of snow this evening. Going to bed in a cloud of amber from Tauer’s amber bodyoil.

Seville à l’Aube yesterday evening, and suddenly I felt it was too much. It has been among my not frequently worn favourites, so I’m sure I’ll soon enough find it perfect.

    Like

      • The bodyoil is a pretty straightforward amber, but there’s such a lot of perfume in the jojoba base oil that the perfume is present on skin for many hours and also forms a cloud of scent around me, it is really good to apply in the evening or together with most amber perfumes for day wear.

      • Finishing a bottle , decant or sample. I am trying to start using up my samples and decants rather than hoarding them for fear of evaporation which many perfume peeps have recently been talking about. so this is the week to make some headway on that. Life is too short to not enjoy what is there rather than saving everything for future reference.

        Like

        • That explains why I am not aware of the term. I have NEVER finished a bottle, even when bought partial. I still have the Armani Code I bought in 2010, the first bottle I ever bought for myself. I’d have to admit that I’m more likely to thunk due to evaporation than use.

          • Oh boy, Greg, I fell down the rabbit hole circa 1970/71 and have thunked at least 500 full bottles since then due to daily wearings.

  19. Another really nasty hot day coming our way. I’m wearing Dior Granville. I have to say that the profile of this one made me a bit nervous; pine and lemon sounds dangerously like cleaning products to me. No problem though, the opening is a blend of lemon and rosemary that smells terrific. Hopefully this one will stick around through 39 degree heat, or I’ll have to fish it out for more.

I’d like to thank Portia for the opportunity to try out these fragrances; it’s been fun wearing things that I would probably not have thought to try.

      • Thanks, it really is gorgeous. Our tree is stunning this year!! Eight feet of Fraser Pine glory. Super full and smelling awesome. It’s gonna take a whole lot of lights! Tree decorating is a two day affair here. Day one: lights. Day two: ornaments.

      • Funny that you consider it a luxury!? Ever since I can remember we’ve had fresh-cut trees. They’re widely available here. I know many people opt for the artificial tree for a wide variety of reasons, but I never considered a fresh tree a luxury. And the smell……ah

        Like

        • We never have an artificial tree, but many trees sold here are imported from Danish plantations. Those are often cut weeks before they are sold and so won’t drink water and start dropping needles after less than a week indoors. A fresh-cut tree on the other hand absorbs water and will last from Dec. 20 through Christmas to the 20th day of Christmas. Avoiding all those dry needles on the floor and having the fresh fir or pine smell is a simple luxury to me.

          Like

          • Oh! I see what you mean. Yes, there are stands around here that sell trees that have been cut 3-4 weeks prior to being put out on the lot. We buy our trees directly from a tree farm. One minute they’re standing, the next on the roof of the car. I do have a little twinge of guilt when the tree is cut, though. But, we enjoy it for almost a month and then it gets properly recycled.

  23. I’m mixing things today – wearing Lattafa Ameer Al Oudh, and Montale Parchouli Leaves and might add last few drops of Lattafa Al Fursan. This will ‘thunk’ a few little sample vials and hopefully all work nicely together. The cool change is here, with rain yippee!

    • Wow! That sounds like a very interesting combination. It should work and I bet you’ll smell amazing. Glad you’re getting your cooler weather, although I was having a hard time sympathizing with all the whining about the heat. It’s -17 here. Is that more your style 😏

  24. The heat wave continues although it looks like it will break soon, given that the cricket in Adelaide has a rain break. Today I’m wearing another cheapie, albeit pretty hard to get. It’s from a candle-maker / homewares outfit called Astier de Villatte. The fragrance is called Eau Fugace. It’s just an absolutely refreshing citrus and neroli, nothing really fancy, but perfect for a hot day. It has a good pedigree too; the nose was Francoise Caron.

    • Just did a little research on Caron. Seems that she also did Eau d’Orange Verte, one of my all-time favourite summer scents. No wonder I like this.

  25. SOTD Cadjmere. Another Pierre Guillaume beauty and perfect for a day with squeaky snow, bright blue skies and -23. A velvety sandalwood, slightly spicy and extraordinarily smooth. Thankfully not too sweet as my stickier gourmands are just not doing it for me this season. Will switch to Carnal Flower tonight for the first party of the festive season.

  26. I currently smell of frankincense and patchouli from my Lush bubble bath (the blue skies bar… about 1/4 of the bar gave me a 1950s-movie level of froth). My hotel room already smelled of incense–I may have spritzed a mad amount on the bed sheets to kill off that very-clean-but-weirdly-stale smell in here.

I travelled in Cuir d’Ange. And then went wandering around fancy department stores. Which crazy fool put Harvey Nichols right next to Selfridges in a town where I am killing a spot of time? Doused myself in No.18 and smelled glorious. While sniffing dozens of things I’d not got my nose in before. And, er, may have had the tiniest 10ml travel spray Malle accident…

oh. BEIGE. Kate, kate, kate: I finally tried Beige. You’re right. One of the most misnamed scents ever. So, so pretty. Not insipid or pale brown. Wow, that hawthorn-honey-freesia.

  27. Went to a dinner party at a co-workers house this Saturday evening. Fragrant Arabian food and much laughter. After some hesitation I went with Chanel Coromandel EdT and received a compliment from someone who is not “into” perfume. And later we had a nice chat about scent, so now several people want me to recommend perfumes. That always makes me a bit worried! Well, at least I could tell them that storing perfume in the bathroom (usually with a high temperature because of the heating cables in the floor) is a bad idea if you want it to last.

  33. Finally got my sample of Casablanca! Testing it now and WOW! this is a BWF. Very heady orange blossom but nicely balanced by something citric. Not sure what though. Every once in awhile I get a satisfying whiff of oak moss, but possible not enough to push this into drool-worthy territory. This is Fracas big on me. A half spray is huge!! I’m not convinced I can wear this. I loved Narcisse Noir way back when, but just couldn’t pull it off either. I see Casablanca on a femme fatale type. Swanning around in layers of frothy chiffon or organza. I don’t do chiffon. I’m a ‘less is more’ dame. Casablanca is for a ‘more is better’ gal.
