As you all may know if you have been following my Strange Tales from the Cookie Kitchen on A Bottled Rose, I have an Altered States past.  These days perfume is my addiction of choice and once in a while something interesting lands in my hands.  

The strangelove nyc perfume oil collection – by Christophe Laudamiel.

I was given the strangelove nyc oils as a gift on my recent trip to London.  I was familiar with the name but that was it.   I had no idea that Helena Christensen, the supermodel, had anything to do with them for a start.  Have a look at their website for the whole story and for a proper assessment of the three oud oils please read Clare’s brilliant and in-depth analysis.

I was hooked from the first drop.

deadofnight – oud, rose, violet leaves, vanilla balsam, sandalwood, amber, musk

I am no oud expert, being amongst those who hated the stuff for a long time.  I totally got into Dior’s Oud Isphahan last year, but this is the first oud-based oil that has screamed my name.  The opening is über-animalic – beautiful, addictive.  A decent smear across the neck lasts a good twenty four hours on me.  Oud is in all of the Strangelove NYC fragrances, but in the deadofnight it is the main attraction.

meltmyheart – orris butter, sandalwood, a drop of oud, ylang yang dark chocolate, mandarin, ginger and bergamot  ….

Oh my gosh this stuff is freaking amazing.  It is the favourite of the few bloggers who have written about it and is just divine.  Very sensual, and so smooth.  The orris really comes to the fore after a few hours on the skin.  I have never smelt anything like it.  Lasts even longer than deadofnight on me.     As Clare says “billowing gusts of melting dark chocolate, and buttery orris, shouting eat me …..”

silencethesea – pure real ambergris, black oud, blue cammomile, natural narcissus, tuberose absolute, mimosa.

I am sat here, nose glued to my wrist, gulping it in.  The more I wear this the more I am beguiled.  This is an oil for a perfumista to be alone with;  celebrating the olfactory senses.  It’s comforting, feels grey in colour, and smells of air, skin, and ocean spray.

lostinflowers – jasmine, champaca, gardenia enfleurage, saffron, real oud

Animalic hothouse white floral, almost a decaying green, tinged with oud.  Roll on hot weather.

All the oils last at least a day.  There are EdPs too but I have not tried them yet.  Sitting back and waiting to see if someone gives them to me as a gift.  Prices vary in the whole collection from about $150 to $500.

I wanted to call this post “Suck It Up Bitches, You Can’t Afford It.”   We are not their target audience, except maybe for the super models, footballers, and WAGS amongst us.  I would pay the money for these if I had it though.  Because the strangelove nyc’s are THAT good.

  1. Oooh meltmyheart has my name on it but lostinflowers sounds kinda fascinating too. I just remember the lunch table smelling of oud 🙂

    It’s fun to try and read about these amazing scents even if we don’t have the bank balance to match.

    • Tara – the meltmyheart is so gorgeous. And the oud is so understated. It adds a great depth to it, but I don’t notice it until at least three hours in. But I guess that doesn’t tmean that others don’t. …… hahahaha. I absolutely love. As I said, all of them are gorgeous and I will finish them all. 😉 xxxx

    • Sandra! Yaaaaaaas. They are fantastic. I would love to try the EdPs, and if I am ever near where they are sold, will do that, although I bet the oils are better. Mwah. xxxxxx

    • Really Matty? Are you not a secret WAG? I think they are out of most people’s price range. There is a lot of stuff out of our price range, the über-expensive Lutens, Roja Dove (ugh) etc …. the difference is some are total shite, but the strangelove´s are not. So if you are gonna pay a shit ton of money, at least buy something good. Hugs. xxxxx

  7. Oooh, I say, the meltmyheart is also calling my name – small matter of the cost to one side here – but I must confess to being disconcerted by the italics. There again I am easily disconcerted by typography, as you know! Love the illustrations as well – so moody and atmospheric and really complement the post. You have been busy writing!

    • I was really lucky to get a hold of these. Even if it took a flight to London and back to get them. I will wear them for you. I have never written about something people can probably not get hold of but ….. you know. 😉

  9. Have read about silencethesea around the place. It’s supposed to have a white truffle note in it. Can you sense the earthiness of the truffle in the oil? I would love to sniff this scent one day.

      I know it is listed in the notes so I assume it is in there. The oil has an earthiness, that would be a fair description, and a faint kind of bitter aniseedy impression, as to whether that has anything to do with truffle? Maybe you will come across it one day. It is so unusual, sniffing it would be a treat. Lots of love; Val. xxx

      • Oooh maybe that aniseedy impression might be the angelica? I was wondering about that too! I used to wash with a naturally based fabric softener that had angelica in it, had to change brands as others in my house had no idea how to use it (overuse was ruining everything). I wouldn’t mind if it reminded me of that, I really liked the smell. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Val.

    • Go for the books. The only way they are affordable, barely, for the serfs, is the set of three. It is about 150 bucks. Also a shit ton of dosh – but they would last a really long time. Thanks for dropping by. 🙂

    • Hi Saffyishere! It is the most interesting out of them all. It does not feel like perfume, but that is not to say it doesn’t smell. The power of suggestion is strong, but it really does smell like the ocean. To test that out I let my trainer try some. He said it smelt like seaweed and rain. I was quite stunned at his answer, as he had no clue as to what it was. It is a an oil I would and will wear when I want solitude.
      As with all of them, a little goes a loooong way. Drop by for tea and a sniff if you are in the area. xxxxxx

  12. What a great and wonderful post, Val! Loved the photographs. They all sound absolutely wonderful. Only tried Silencethesea in edp and loved it. Reminded me of oysters, very salty and original not like any fragrance I smelled before. Will try them again. Have you seen the matching necklaces for the oils? Absolutely stunning.

  13. I took LostInFlowers as my sole travel perfume to Milan in April, and got stopped all the time with “What IS it??? It’s GORGEOUS!!!” At a perfume expo no less! and yeah…. it lasts for EVAH! Christophe Laudamiel never disappoints; I love his work, his aesthetic, his sensibility, and his drive for transparency in an ever-clouded industry. xoxo

    • I have three little pots of the lostinflowers and soooooo happy to have them. It really is quite fantastic. So heady. Yeah – well, I‘m sure it knocked spots off of most stuff in Milan. 😉 The subtle use of oud in the oils (except deadofnight) is nothing short of genius. Mwah. ❤️

  14. I was waiting for the review ever since you reported what you have brought back from your London trip 😉 First of all I really like the name/s of the house and the perfumes. I like the idea of good longevity and I even think I’d come to like oud (which I normally dislike) after I’ve read your descriptions. But the price…! OMG, I should forget about them asap. Silencethesea sounds just right for me.

    • silencethesea is least like a perfume. If I had the chance I would want meltmyheart. Yep – outrageously expensive. We all know that no perfume costs that to make, nor is worth that money. What these have going for them though, is that they are extremely good. Did you see the necklaces? I love the name too. Again, it works because the perfumes are beautiful I think. Underground cool, Velvet Underground, Audioslave vibes. We can dream on. xxxxx
