SOTD 10.12 – 16.12.2018

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 10.12 – 16.12.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Guerlain InsolenceEDP. Iris and violets, somewhat loud and eccentric, but thoroughly enjoyable. I don’t care for the bottle though.

  2. Musc Ravageur. a.k.a. Shalimar for boys.

If you have a spare good thought, please send it to my poor wee kitty Herschel who is at the vets having emergency treatment for kidney disease. It’s all a bit touch and go right now, but there’s still a decent chance she could respond and rally. We’ll know more in the next 48 hours or so.

  4. Hi my perfume family! Today I had an home office day, finally. I was wearing Tiempe Passate because I was reminded of it yesterday when realizing that Luca Turin gave it a two star review. Who cares? I love it in every occasion!
I got a package from a girlfriend with four samples from Maison Francis Kurkdjian so I will be testing them during the next days. (doing a happy dance)

    • I have never tried TC, can you imagine? Tuberose is a rather challenging note for me so I shy away from it, especially when it is part of the perfume’s name. Would you say it’s a typical, strong tuberose scent?

      Like

      • This is a full on Tuberose that’s got a mentholated opening. I think it might be a bit challenging for a tuberose virgin😉. Get a sniff of Gucci Bloom to ease yourself into tuberose mania. It’s very well done, and blended with other florals but the note is discernible.

  6. Received my sample of Casablanca. BWF x 2 on me!! I could have sworn I just sprayed Fracas for the first couple of minutes. Then it slid into a heady orange blossom. Some citric notes seemed to cut its’ thickness. Very nice whiffs of oakmoss that I wished were more pronounced. I remember reading here someone commenting on a perfume they enjoyed but made her feel like she was wearing someone else’s clothing. That’s Casablanca for me. Although….two hours in and it’s feeling a lot more comfortable. Top notch production. Without a doubt. Powerful and long-lasting.

  7. Thank you for the love and kind words about my poor little fluffcat. I’ve just spoken to the vet: after scans, x-rays, and more blood tests, it turns out that Herschel has pancreatitis. Poor little beast. that’s painful as hell. So, the kidney disease may be far less than originally feared, and flared up by this. And it’s not a truly scary cause of all this drama (there were some *dreadful* possibilities being discussed). Same treatment, and “most” cats make it through this. But she really, really needs to start eating… I get to visit her this afternoon though.

(Wearing a little Mitzah for reassurance today)

    • Oh dear, Crikey. I know how you are feeling. It’s heart-rending to see our beloved mulies suffer. They’re so trusting and innocent. I truly hope that treatment proves effective, but more than that, provides some pain relief. Typically animals won’t eat when they are suffering. If Herschel eats, consider it a promising sign. Big hugs from all of us.

      • Thank you, marcella. Please scritch/pet your wee beasties on my behalf.
It was good to see her this afternoon, and love on her a while. She’s way more responsive now. Still not eating, though. If she doesn’t start by breakfast time, they’ll have to start feeding her by tube.

        Like

        • Good that she’s more responsive. When you say feed by tube, do you mean an IV arrangement or proper solids in a tube down the gullet? Either way. Poor kitty. Is she on any antibiotics or anti-inflammatories? Chances are once those are on board, the discomfort will ease and she may well eat on her own. She’s also probably very stressed being there which also affects her appetite. Any idea when you can bring her home?
And yes, my gang got extra scritches and yummy rubs. They’ve all decided that they are probably living in a forest and have taken up residence under the Christmas tree.

          Like

          • yep, tube through nose to get actual food in if she still can’t manage to eat. Herschel’s been on a drip for fluids to flush out the toxins from kidney issues, plus antacids, anti-inflams, antibiotics, and pain meds for the past day and a half. And, initially, an oxygen tent to help settle her breathing. She’s looking very droopy and bedraggled, obviously, but rustled up the energy to really get into some face rubs. So, she’s not quitting yet.

I wish I could have a crimble tree…but, well, Atkins is awfully fond of climbing *and* shiny things. And I learned the hard way from a previous cat with similar tendencies

            • Mine are far too lazy. They view exercise as something only the deranged squirrels outside of their viewing window would partake in. A day and a half on the medication cocktail is not that long. Hopefully the 48 hour mark will show more significant improvement. We’re rooting for her!

              Like

    • Aww that’s a case of good and bad news all at once. Hopefully medication will ease the pain. And kidney disease in puddy tats is helped massively by strict diet. I hope you’re feeling more optimistic now.

      Like

      • thanks, cassieflower. It *is* good news. If we can get her past this crisis, the prognosis is pretty good for longer term management–and yep, the special diet is key. They were about to give her a whacking great big dose of cat-version-of-morphine to squish that pain as we left. So, crossing fingers she’ll feel a lot better and a lot more comfortable after that. Though she was well enough to give me a quite determined purry head bump.

  10. SOTN: Baruti Voyance and their Chai. I’m so regretting applying the former 😦 There’s a metallic note I can’t pass through. Chai seems nice but has more dried fruity notes that I can possibly handle.

    Like

    • Hmm. Interesting. Chai is a notoriously difficult fragrant blend to make (imho).I naturally gravitate towards them then am horrified/unimpressed! So glad I don’t favour gourmands.

What don’t you like about Voyance, Diana?

      Like

      • I can see Chai’s beauty, it’s just too loud on my skin. I can’t deal with so much projection 🙂
As for Voyance, it’s got some woody musks that mess with my sense of smell, – I’ve smelled them before, for instance, Nasomatto Black Afgan and Nudiflorum, Xerjoff Mefisto. Turns out, I’m hyper-sensitive to those, I only smell chemical ingredients, not the perfume itself. That’s okay.

  18. MFK Oud Silk Mood today. I’ve started with only two spritzes because of “oud” which I dislike so I was thinking it may be a scrubber. Later on I’ve added three more spritzes. Not bad at all. Came home and decided to try Tobacco Rose, figuring it was sure to be another hit. Nothing going. Rose and I simply do not agree. LOVE the smell of roses in a garden/florists, but my skin turns it to sour wee water. I’m disappointed. I was hoping to finally find a rose that I could wear.

      • It was fun, a bit stupid, but still entertaining. Directing and writing could be better but it’s a visual joy (I mean both digital effects and beautiful actors. Nicole Kidman looks as if she’s still in her early thirties. It’s a lie, of course, but who cares as long as decent actors can continue to appear on the big screen).
DC Comics still need to step up their game but along with Wonder Woman Aquaman is an improvement. I really think their characters deserve better treatment.

      • I think they are rather polarising fragrances, and that “challenging” description is pretty fair 🙂 But I tend to get on quite well with smoky and/or blokey scents (or ones that have notes that tend to get put in the “masculine” pile, anyway)

Lignum Vitae has more juniper than I can live with comfortably, but Fathom V went pretty rapidly from sample to bottle–it’s a very evocative scent for me, sitting comfortably in memories of landscapes and experience, and I really enjoy the smellscape while wearing it. I keep pondering a decant of Vi et Armis–but wish I could dial down the whisky in it. CdN makes me feel like a pirate queen, though.
