SOTD 24.12 – 30.12.2018

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 24.12 – 30.12.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Is wet and foggy outside, so my Sotd will be Akkad from Lubin 😊 Happy Holidays everybody 🤗🎄 and may Santa bring under the tree, your most wanted and special perfume 😜😜

  2. (Post copied from last week’s SOTD thread)

So far today I have worn Chinatown (oh gosh yes, goddess quality), SL Tuberose Criminelle, and the utterly beautiful YSL Y.

Right now I have ELDO YoSLY, Masque Terralba, and Nest Citrine on.
    Hey, it’s almost Christmas!! 🎄🎷🎉

Happy Christmas to our southern APJers, it’ll soon be beddy-byes for you all. Hope you’ve been good girls and boys so that Santa will come with something nice. Because there IS a Santa 🎅🏼

  7. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. I’m wearing my sample of Casablanca (I’m blaming you, Marzipan, for making me violate my no-buy). It was worth it – quite a perfume, and so amazing it’s only Diane’s 4th perfume! Preparing my beef tenderloin for tomorrow’s dinner and relaxing after a dinner party last night for my sister-in-law’s Birthday.

  8. Dearest APJers, merry Christmas to you and your families. Hope you all are having an amazing time.

Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas in January so don’t congratulate me just yet (and New Year’s Day is much more popular for most Russians, anyway).

  9. SOTD: a drop of vintage Fahrenheit. It’s a new one for me, I’ll give it some skin time to be able to pass the verdict: it’s so not what I expected it to be (way greener!).

  10. A beautiful bright blue sky over a frosty city today. Broken out the 1970s-vintage No.19 parfum to go with the suprising sunlight. Chergui post gym, now it’s dark again.

A round of more vet shenanigans: Atkins’s turn this time. Yesterday she broke her meow. So, one very, very angry and weird-sounding catty to the vet today. (She’s fine. Had something small stuck in her throat, and a bad tooth to round off the everything-is-closing-for-xmas fun.)

A happy, joyous and Merry Christmas to all you wonderful APJ’ers and, of course, our intrepid host Portia . However all of you celebrate the holidays do so with joy and merriment in your hearts.

Presents opened. Santa has been so very generous. Now it’s time for a quiet cuppa.

  13. It’s past 2 in the night and the house is quiet. Cannot sleep just yet, too much food today which seems to be the general rule on Christmas Eve. No scent under the Christmas tree for me, but niche products of dark chocolate, Greek sweets, salted almonds and a bottle of quality port and much more.

I wore Dior Ambre Nuit and found it did not interfere with the wines So it was a good choice. We had wines from three different countries this evening, even if the pork and traditional side dishes go better with beer.

      • Have been wearing Dior Ambre Nuit again. Christmas Day had us eating a buffet of different salmon, pickled herring, cold cut meat and sausages, potato “lefse”, home made jams and more. So we have really eaten nearly as much as yesterday! Today there was time for church for those who wanted and a leisurely stroll for the others.

We take baking for Christmas seriously, but this year only Vanillekipferln, biscotti and an American style Christmascake/fruitcake were homemade. Luckily some artisanal producers have started selling their cakes at the farmer’s market, so we had plenty of variety also of sweets and cakes. Good thing we don’t eat like this during the rest of the year! But sooo good between Christmas and New Year.

          • Christmas baking is traditionally supposed to be 7 types of biscuits/ cookies. So that is what we would usually aim for. My stepmother has brought some Austrian specialities into the family, but there wasn’t time and energy for whole days in the kitchen this year.

Forgot to mention that Santa left me a present in the mailbox this morning…A TRAVEL SPRAY OF CASABLANCA!!!! So y’all are gonna be sick of me for a while because that is all I will be wearing! (but I will mix things up in the evening, I promise, cause I have a few more decants to thunk!)

and we just filled our bellies with Chinese food, later to be followed with stollen….we are having a very unconventional Christmas but I love it…and yes , I am FINALLY in my bathrobe!!!

  17. All the eating and unwrapping was done last night. I found it to be an exceptionally magical event this year and it reminded me to be very grateful indeed to have such a kind, generous, close and loving family. That’s what the holidays are really about.
Spent two hours at the clinic with my youngest daughter early this afternoon. She was coughing like a two-pack-a-day smoker last night and when I went to hug and kiss her, the girl was burning up with fever! She said that had been normal the last several aft/evenings and ‘relax, I’m fine’ 😳 Well, not in my books! She’d been coughing for ten days and now fever. So I dragged her kicking and complaining to the clinic (was deserted). She has bacterial bronchitis. She now has an inhaler, cough medicine and antibiotics. Finished there and dragged her back home with me. Making curing soups and teas currently. Also cooking up a storm for some hard partying friends that will be joining us tomorrow.
This morning was the brilliant Parfum de Thérèse to be followed by vintage Shalimar later. Loads of leftovers for dinner. Stollen and Christmas cookies for dessert 😋

I was also dancing the nights away, as usual 😉 Christmas Eve and everything was nice, cozy and everything it should have been. I got a copy of Perfume The Guide 2018 from my daughter and I was wearing Armani by Giorgio Armani. I notice I wasn’t the only one wearing a vintage perfume that day. Magie Noire, Nuit de Noel…you’ve all smelled heavenly!
I wish everyone a beautiful happy season. Enjoy, have fun, give love ❤
Thank you Portia and the APJ crew for this wonderful platform for many people who share their passion about perfume.

  21. Merry Christmas y’all.

I did end up layering Mark Birley and vintage Eau Sauvage for the big day. Nice combination, I thought.

Today, of course, was the Test match, and I chose Hugh Parsons Hyde Park, which is a figgy green scent which just seems to go with cricket at the MCG.

  22. Having a super-lazy Boxy Day so far. PJs, curled up cats, coffee, new books to read.

Nice, chilled out xmas day. Started with coffee and presents–including that oops moment where it turns out we each bought the other a copy of the same book–a rare cooked breakfast. Which made up for the later culinary fail: I was going to do a chicken tagine. But had completely forgotten to marinade the meat in the spices. Hey ho. We’ll eat that later today. Smoked mackerel pilaf may not be a traditional xmas dinner, but it was tasty. Otherwise, we had a good long walk around Leith, played on the swings, hung by under a tree which was full of 20, 30 maddly twittering sparrows, wandered by the river to see the scruffy teenage swans, checked out the big graffiti wall for new work. All the while, mr crikey was trailing a wisps of deep foresty Slumberhouse Norne, and I was cocooned in vintage Cuir de Russie. (And Zoologist Civet when that finally faded away about 16 hours later.)

Pondering Bois des Iles extrait… three chanel parfums in a row? Or a rare dab of old No.5?

  23. Dryad. And it’s a thunk. I will probably violate my no-buy and get at least a decant of this. It’s far too good to be without.
Little daughter fever-free last night and therefore thinks she can go to the gym today. NO!
Cooking continues, this time for the party animals coming over tonight. My recycling bin will be a neighbourhood embarrassment when it finally hits the sidewalk. Looks like the liquor store did a massive decluttering. Mr. LH suggested we drive it elsewhere and make it someone else’s bin of shame. I think he’s on to something.

    Like

    • Trust Mr LH to come up with a plan! At least you can (kinda) cover your embarrassing excesses in your roadside bin. I have to go clanking to the public glass recycling facility and THUNK each and every bottle, jar, whatever. My shame is out there for all and sundry to witness, except of course I have zero shame😛
Your Mini has obviously turned a very sharp corner. What sort of nitro antibiotics did she get? Super duper ones obviously! Have a great evening of partying with your friends, my kind of evening. I’m babysitting tonight, Smallies all tucked up cosy while their parents are out on the town. I will resume my own partying on Sunday when I hit Germany with a bang or three.

  24. I’ve decided to start thunking my samples so I wore CdG Blackpepper (nice but I can do without it), Molinard Les Amoureux de Peynet (the jury is still out on this one) and Molinard Figue (very good. Do I need a bottle, though?).

    Like

      • And actually Diana, a question….have you tried any of the other Molinards? The current formulations in the beautiful purple bottles (here comes my bottle porn!!! 🙂 ) show up heavily discounted online. The Musc one I was eyeballing a while ago because various folks say it smells like Nag Champa (and I love champaca as a note) but Amber and Patchouli and the Fig ones look good too.

        Like

        • Following your footsteps 😀 !
I wish I could help you to decide whether Musc, Ambre and Patchouli are a safe blind-buy but unfortunately, I haven’t tried any of them. I am, however, familiar with Violette (I envy the people who say it’s a violet: on me it’s some kind of apple air freshener), the sweet Nirmala, citrusy Les Amoureux, the old-school aldehydic Molinard de Molinard and Figue which is really delightful: there’s fig and a bunch of citruses in it. If I see a nice bargain, I’ll grab it, that’s fo sho!

          Like

      • Neva, I can’t compare Figue de Molinard to a real fig (the figs they sell here in Russia don’t seem like reliable sources of information, lol) but this scent definitely reminds me of juicy ripe fruit. It’s a greenish citrusy scent, very cheerful and bright, yet, it might look a bit linear if you compare it to, say, Atelier Cologne Figuier Ardent. Then again, these are very different scents so this wouldn’t make much sense.

      • I watched only five minutes of it and decided to add it to the MY LIST and try to get Mr. Marzipan to watch it with me…it is quite often that we cannot agree on shows to watch together in the evening…I am going to force him to watch the first episode with me tonight…will report back later….I did watch the trailer , though, and it looked good! Oh and it’s a murder mystery…right up my alley!

        Liked by 1 person

        • A murder mystery? Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. Ok, I’ve looked it up – it’s supposedly based on the novel (and movie) The Perfume. I’ve read the book when it came out in the eighties and the movie is great. Have fun with the series.

          Like

    • Whaat? I haven’t yet decided if I need Netflix. Have satellite tv and yet I don’t really watch a huge amount of it other than property porn and medical stuff with a little bit of soaps thrown in. Going to check out this Perfume thing now.

      Like

      • I think if you have satellite TV you probably don’t need Netflix. We gave up cable because it became too expensive and there was very little we enjoyed watching. We got Netlfix and then Hulu after being without TV for several months. Netlfix and Hulu are not nearly as good as they once were AND the priced have gone up…they dropped a lot of shows we enjoyed and now there is quite a bit of crossover between the two…plus, I binge watch (like Portia!) so most of the series I do enjoy are done way too soon! I think lots of folks in the States are now saying that there are better options (like Amazon Prime) but I don’t know what they offer. For now I make due with what I have…will let you know if Perfume is any good.

        Like

        • Also, I think Netflix out of the States offers up different shows…I know Portia has mentioned some shows that I just can’t get on my Netflix…so I think the selection varies country to country.

          Like

        • I was just reading up on it. I had actually read about it before when it was released but had forgotten it. My friends have Amazon Prime on the Firestick and they find lots of good stuff to watch. Do they have a trial period for you to see what you think?

          Like

          • Not that I know of. Right now I am making due with what we have. If Hulu gets worse we might drop it and then consider Amazon Prime. Not sure how it works because I think it also ties into expedient shipping (which is good because Mr. Marzipan does order from amazon). I look into it eventually.

            Like

          • Oh— it’s based on the Suskind novel! I have that. Very good read! I actually have Parfum and Jitterbug on my New Year’ eve reading list. Both re-reads.

          • Jyotsna- yes! it is based on the novel. It’s in German but they have dubbed it. Watched the first episode and Mr. Marzipan said it was too horrific for his taste so I guess I am on my own with this one. Are you re-reading T Robbins Jitterbug Perfume? The For Her looks a little dark In the bottle compared to pics online so maybe my bottle has been kicking around for a while. I know Portia said no one needs 100ml of anything, and I do agree but for under 10 bucks, I can deal with that. Besides I may need to send some samples out….

      • Love Begins in Winter by Simon Van Booy. Beautiful stories, I have his new book but thought I’d try this earlier one first. Before I got to any of my books, I had to play minecraft and then read some Goosebumps.

        • Minecraft and Goosebumps – you are hanging out with the cool kids for sure! Sunday will be last few epidsodes available of Vikings season 5 in between washing and tidying up. New Year’s Day a day off. Not much planned. You?

          • I haven’t watched Vikings! Day off is 👌

Here we’re playing more minecraft! Although my husband has taken over. Do you play? I’m signed up for a year long portrait class so getting some prep done. And my 2019 planner set up. Fold a mountain of clothes. Pack away Christmas decorations. I get all the fun jobs here.😏

  39. Last night thunked Dain Blond. Also, put a dab of vintage Chloe extrait on my hand… I only have maybe half of one ml left but a good friend reminded me that it’s in my basement and I wanted to try it on my skin…takes me back to high school when I wore it decades ago. Now I am in Cuir de Russie for early Walmart run. Later post shower Casablanca 😉

Threw all the toys and bits that were lying around everywhere into the playroom and slammed the door. Stripped some beds, cleaned two bathrooms. Had a coffee to recharge, and some cereal. Threw one load of laundry into wash, then dryer. Another load of washing. Then a nice bath for myself and colour boost conditioner for my hair. I’m the goddess of the underworld today in Anubis. Dark and deadly I am😉. Clothes rolled up and ready for packing. We leave the house around 2.30a.m. for early flight. No sleepies for me tonight unless I grab a few winks on the couch.

    • I’m amazed by your efficiency. I usually leave the stuff around for at least half a day because I need a strong motivation to get started. But on the other hand, you don’t want it to be lying around when you return, I understand.
Have a wonderful time. You’ll knock the flight assistants down with Anubis. They mostly smell sweetish-fruity.

  41. Been spending a lot of time schlepping to and from Melbourne for the cricket, and not much time on here.

Friday was really hot. To cut through it I wore one of the best citrus bombs there is: Monsieur Balmain. Yesterday was not so bad, but still muggy. I chose Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet. It started off with lemon pepper, perfect for the weather, When I got home around 12 hours later, I could still smell the pepper on my wrists. Very good longevity from this one.

Home on Sunday and relaxing. Again it will be warm, so I’m going with AdP Colonia Essenza, one of the most versatile of their colognes, in my view.

    • Hello Greg, hope you were sitting in the shade but good to hear your scents handled the heat ok. I’m wondering if you would like to be the new owner of a bunch of samples I no longer require? I was gifted a bunch of samples a little while ago and of course have been adding to them. Even if you try them and then share with an another. I did a tidy up of my perfume shelf yesterday. (smelanie at outlook dot com) no pressure to accept…

      • Hi Melanie. That’s very generous of you. We could perhaps swap my excess samples for yours.

This sort of reminds me of an idea I had a while ago but never enacted: a samples round-robin. APJ members could circulate their unwanted samples rather than keep them in a cupboard. You could do it in a pay-it-forward fashion; person A gets 5 samples from person B, sends 5 of theirs to person C, and so on.

    • I’ve never tried Blenheim Bouquet and I think it’s one of Penhaligon’s bestsellers. Colonia Essenza is a perfect cologne, I agree. Have a good day!

Virtual decluttering today. ACK! Backups, then sort, file, and delete. Fresh backup. Not as painful as the physical decluttering- I have some good automated systems in place.

  45. Remember the evening when the guy who was smelling great pulled out his sample of FM Noir Epices and handed it over to me? Well, I’m wearing the sample right now. Don’t remember how he looked exactly anymore, but Noir Epices is wonderful. I’ve sprayed all over my clothes and hair and there’s still a bit left for the afternoon.

  47. Repeat of yesterday’s routine. Early gym and walking followed by a solid 10 hours of work. This time in vintage Arpege extrait. And without interference from grinding nonsense. Mr LH has two hockey games today and will be properly tuckered out. Phew!

Not a bad result: Gant knit, Aquascutum top (both ladies),Turnbull & Asser tie and Brooks Brothers shirt for me and a LE etching for the two of us. Oh, and some Dior spectacle frames for $2.

    • Oh, I completely forgot to mention fragrance with all my bragging. I saw some, including a mystery bottle and a bottle of Laurelle Loves Me Loves Me Not. Couple of Lauders and some Lynx. Nothing to get excited about. I didn’t wear anything during the day but am wearing TF Italian Cypress for the evening.
