Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 24.12 – 30.12.2018
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

It’s past 2 in the night and the house is quiet. Cannot sleep just yet, too much food today which seems to be the general rule on Christmas Eve. No scent under the Christmas tree for me, but niche products of dark chocolate, Greek sweets, salted almonds and a bottle of quality port and much more.
I wore Dior Ambre Nuit and found it did not interfere with the wines So it was a good choice. We had wines from three different countries this evening, even if the pork and traditional side dishes go better with beer.

Have been wearing Dior Ambre Nuit again. Christmas Day had us eating a buffet of different salmon, pickled herring, cold cut meat and sausages, potato “lefse”, home made jams and more. So we have really eaten nearly as much as yesterday! Today there was time for church for those who wanted and a leisurely stroll for the others.
We take baking for Christmas seriously, but this year only Vanillekipferln, biscotti and an American style Christmascake/fruitcake were homemade. Luckily some artisanal producers have started selling their cakes at the farmer’s market, so we had plenty of variety also of sweets and cakes. Good thing we don’t eat like this during the rest of the year! But sooo good between Christmas and New Year.

All the eating and unwrapping was done last night. I found it to be an exceptionally magical event this year and it reminded me to be very grateful indeed to have such a kind, generous, close and loving family. That’s what the holidays are really about.
Spent two hours at the clinic with my youngest daughter early this afternoon. She was coughing like a two-pack-a-day smoker last night and when I went to hug and kiss her, the girl was burning up with fever! She said that had been normal the last several aft/evenings and ‘relax, I’m fine’ 😳 Well, not in my books! She’d been coughing for ten days and now fever. So I dragged her kicking and complaining to the clinic (was deserted). She has bacterial bronchitis. She now has an inhaler, cough medicine and antibiotics. Finished there and dragged her back home with me. Making curing soups and teas currently. Also cooking up a storm for some hard partying friends that will be joining us tomorrow.
This morning was the brilliant Parfum de Thérèse to be followed by vintage Shalimar later. Loads of leftovers for dinner. Stollen and Christmas cookies for dessert 😋

Having a super-lazy Boxy Day so far. PJs, curled up cats, coffee, new books to read.
Nice, chilled out xmas day. Started with coffee and presents–including that oops moment where it turns out we each bought the other a copy of the same book–a rare cooked breakfast. Which made up for the later culinary fail: I was going to do a chicken tagine. But had completely forgotten to marinade the meat in the spices. Hey ho. We’ll eat that later today. Smoked mackerel pilaf may not be a traditional xmas dinner, but it was tasty. Otherwise, we had a good long walk around Leith, played on the swings, hung by under a tree which was full of 20, 30 maddly twittering sparrows, wandered by the river to see the scruffy teenage swans, checked out the big graffiti wall for new work. All the while, mr crikey was trailing a wisps of deep foresty Slumberhouse Norne, and I was cocooned in vintage Cuir de Russie. (And Zoologist Civet when that finally faded away about 16 hours later.)
Pondering Bois des Iles extrait… three chanel parfums in a row? Or a rare dab of old No.5?

Swans and smoked mackerel. Reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in Amsterdam and, as a toddler, was attacked by a cranky swan (aren’t they always cranky?). Got a small scar on my left temple to show for it. I think I was introduced to smoked mackerel before I could walk. Luckily I can find some really good fish here cuz the cravings are real.
Give the No. 5 a whirl. Classic.

Yeah: rule number 1 with swans = do not bloody mess with them! But they are charmers if you keep a respectful distance, admire them, and provide snacks (they love grapes and lettuce.)
One of my favourite sights ever was my worst neighbour being chased around and around his garden by a HUGE enraged honking, flapping cob. (We lived right on the river, and this stupid man had tried to disrupt a nest because it was “unsightly”. Same man also threatened to beat me up once… so, he fully deserved to be mobbed.)
These two young uns are part of a huge family–which managed to keep all seven cygnets this year, having lost their full brood of five in a massive storm last year. These two are still hanging out with their parents–the others have moved upstream already.

Cooking continues, this time for the party animals coming over tonight. My recycling bin will be a neighbourhood embarrassment when it finally hits the sidewalk. Am I allowed to buy samples when on a no-buy? Somoeone has to write down the rules… If yes, I’d go for the Papillon samples next year. Dryad is the one I’m most curious about.
Marcella, I always take the empty bottles away after the guests are gone, in the middle of the night, just to make sure no one is watching 😀
LikeLike
Good one. Are you wearing black and sporting a balaclava?
A little word, Neva. Samples are exempted from your no-buy policy and I highly recommend the Papillon sample set. I received mine a month ago and three out of five were outstanding. Dryad will be making either a full bottle or hefty decant appearance in my perfume cupboard this year. And possibly Salome and Anubis as well. Best new stuff I’ve smelled in a long time.

Phew, now I’m relieved…I’ll order everything except Salome because I already know it (and I want it).

Dryad is an utterly lovely spring scent. Yes, I like it all year, but there was something particularly special about Dryad in spring air. Hope you can find a decant, or a really good deal.

Dryad for the spring? Oh well, that settles it then. I only had the opportunity to test it in winter. I can not deny Dryad the chance to play on my skin in the spring.

I’ve decided to start thunking my samples so I wore CdG Blackpepper (nice but I can do without it), Molinard Les Amoureux de Peynet (the jury is still out on this one) and Molinard Figue (very good. Do I need a bottle, though?).
LikeLike
Oh boy! You are on a thunk roll 🙂
LikeLike
And actually Diana, a question….have you tried any of the other Molinards? The current formulations in the beautiful purple bottles (here comes my bottle porn!!! 🙂 ) show up heavily discounted online. The Musc one I was eyeballing a while ago because various folks say it smells like Nag Champa (and I love champaca as a note) but Amber and Patchouli and the Fig ones look good too.
LikeLike
Following your footsteps 😀 !
I wish I could help you to decide whether Musc, Ambre and Patchouli are a safe blind-buy but unfortunately, I haven’t tried any of them. I am, however, familiar with Violette (I envy the people who say it’s a violet: on me it’s some kind of apple air freshener), the sweet Nirmala, citrusy Les Amoureux, the old-school aldehydic Molinard de Molinard and Figue which is really delightful: there’s fig and a bunch of citruses in it. If I see a nice bargain, I’ll grab it, that’s fo sho!
LikeLike
And I got my samples of Nirmala. I definitely get the relationship with Angel, but it was far too sweet for my current tastes. Incredibly strong tho, which is never a bad thing.
LikeLike
thanks Diana for all of that information! No blind buys at the moment 😉 The fig sounds really good, though.
LikeLike
Figue? I’m all ears. Is it good? A real life fig?
LikeLike
Neva, I can’t compare Figue de Molinard to a real fig (the figs they sell here in Russia don’t seem like reliable sources of information, lol) but this scent definitely reminds me of juicy ripe fruit. It’s a greenish citrusy scent, very cheerful and bright, yet, it might look a bit linear if you compare it to, say, Atelier Cologne Figuier Ardent. Then again, these are very different scents so this wouldn’t make much sense.

A murder mystery? Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. Ok, I’ve looked it up – it’s supposedly based on the novel (and movie) The Perfume. I’ve read the book when it came out in the eighties and the movie is great. Have fun with the series.

Whaat? I haven’t yet decided if I need Netflix. Have satellite tv and yet I don’t really watch a huge amount of it other than property porn and medical stuff with a little bit of soaps thrown in. Going to check out this Perfume thing now.
LikeLike
I think if you have satellite TV you probably don’t need Netflix. We gave up cable because it became too expensive and there was very little we enjoyed watching. We got Netlfix and then Hulu after being without TV for several months. Netlfix and Hulu are not nearly as good as they once were AND the priced have gone up…they dropped a lot of shows we enjoyed and now there is quite a bit of crossover between the two…plus, I binge watch (like Portia!) so most of the series I do enjoy are done way too soon! I think lots of folks in the States are now saying that there are better options (like Amazon Prime) but I don’t know what they offer. For now I make due with what I have…will let you know if Perfume is any good.
LikeLike
Also, I think Netflix out of the States offers up different shows…I know Portia has mentioned some shows that I just can’t get on my Netflix…so I think the selection varies country to country.

Not that I know of. Right now I am making due with what we have. If Hulu gets worse we might drop it and then consider Amazon Prime. Not sure how it works because I think it also ties into expedient shipping (which is good because Mr. Marzipan does order from amazon). I look into it eventually.

Mrs. Marzipan, we need to talk turkey. Or swan. I have a problem. I am sitting on some almost full bottles and quite a number of samples/decants that I will NEVER use. None of my female friends wear perfume, never mind appreciate it. Of my two daughters, only the eldest one has even a passing interest, and she has already declined to take on my unloved ones.
Would you open your heart and consider welcoming into your basement some unwanted scents? They are lonely and need a loving home. I would be more than a little delighted to ship them to you and you will be helping me cull my collection so that what remains are only perfumes that I really love.

Diana, I would say safe blind buy, that’s what I did. I paid $10aud each, for her 50ml, him 100ml, which almost seemed too good to be true. I know Portia said no one needs 100ml of anything, and I do agree but for under 10 bucks, I can deal with that. Besides I may need to send some samples out….

Also, put a dab of vintage Chloe extrait on my hand… I only have maybe half of one ml left but a good friend reminded me that it’s in my basement and I wanted to try it on my skin…takes me back to high school when I wore it decades ago. Now I am in Cuir de Russie for early Walmart run. Later post shower Casablanca 😉

Thunked👍🏼. But you have more, right???
Vintage Chloe is delightful!

Nope that is it from the Daim Blond..it was a decant from a perfumista friend who was “alarmed” that I had virtually no leathers in my collection-LOL! I now have Black, Cuir de Russie and Bottega Veneta in either decants or mini bottles so I am covered 🙂

Chloe used to be a great love for me back then. I got a small sample too some years ago and nowadays I find it too strong. Something must be wrong with my nose, right?

NO. I think we just aren’t used to the powerhouses anymore…I felt the same way when I revisited Poison…hard to believe I would do 8 sprays of that one back in the day!

The Smallies vacated the building around noon, and two minutes later I had the hoover out. Did all upstairs and down. Threw all the toys and bits that were lying around everywhere into the playroom and slammed the door. Stripped some beds, cleaned two bathrooms. Had a coffee to recharge, and some cereal. Threw one load of laundry into wash, then dryer. Another load of washing. Then a nice bath for myself and colour boost conditioner for my hair. I’m the goddess of the underworld today in Anubis. Dark and deadly I am😉. Clothes rolled up and ready for packing. We leave the house around 2.30a.m. for early flight. No sleepies for me tonight unless I grab a few winks on the couch.

So off to inflict your partying ways on yet another country, eh? Have a great time. Anubis is causing me smell envy. I love that brew.

I’m amazed by your efficiency. I usually leave the stuff around for at least half a day because I need a strong motivation to get started. But on the other hand, you don’t want it to be lying around when you return, I understand.
Have a wonderful time. You’ll knock the flight assistants down with Anubis. They mostly smell sweetish-fruity.

Been spending a lot of time schlepping to and from Melbourne for the cricket, and not much time on here.
Friday was really hot. To cut through it I wore one of the best citrus bombs there is: Monsieur Balmain. Yesterday was not so bad, but still muggy. I chose Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet. It started off with lemon pepper, perfect for the weather, When I got home around 12 hours later, I could still smell the pepper on my wrists. Very good longevity from this one.
Home on Sunday and relaxing. Again it will be warm, so I’m going with AdP Colonia Essenza, one of the most versatile of their colognes, in my view.

Hello Greg, hope you were sitting in the shade but good to hear your scents handled the heat ok. I’m wondering if you would like to be the new owner of a bunch of samples I no longer require? I was gifted a bunch of samples a little while ago and of course have been adding to them. Even if you try them and then share with an another. I did a tidy up of my perfume shelf yesterday. (smelanie at outlook dot com) no pressure to accept…

Hi Melanie. That’s very generous of you. We could perhaps swap my excess samples for yours.
This sort of reminds me of an idea I had a while ago but never enacted: a samples round-robin. APJ members could circulate their unwanted samples rather than keep them in a cupboard. You could do it in a pay-it-forward fashion; person A gets 5 samples from person B, sends 5 of theirs to person C, and so on.

Sounds great. Like those old recipe swap letters (yes letters, not emails) where you added two names to the bottom of the list and sent recipes to the top two!!

Diana and Neva – hello! Same question to you as above if you would like to receive a fragrantly package? I’ve got a little bunch of scents earmarked for you if you would like. Details above. No pressure to accept. Let’s spread the love.

Melanie, I love your idea with the samples but there’s a huge problem I have (and the people from UK too, as far as I know): we are not allowed to ship liquids of any kind per post for the past three years or so. Some time ago it was functioning perfectly and it was really cheap but then suddenly my package for a perfumista in Canada returned back because of the new regulations 😦
I’ll have to check out the possibilities with a courrier which makes it rather expensive.

Yes, it’s become more and more challenging to ship things overseas…I had a problem about six years ago where I shipped oils to someone in New Zealand…the package was opened and luckily not confiscated by the NZ postal clerks (i guess because it was oils?) …they re-taped it and sent it to the recipient and it arrived two weeks later.

Yes, I do think we have the same issue here.

Melanie, I’m always happy to receive fragrant presents but shipping from Australia must be rather costly.

Diana and Neva, I was just thinking of little fragrant parcels like the everdelightful Portia does. Just a few samples here and there. Wrapped neatly like a letter. I don’t need anything back in return. I’m not fussed re cost – I’d just like to know they’ve gone to someone who will at least sniff or wear in earnest.

I had the travel spray. Atelier Cologne has an option to buy three colognes of your choice as travel sizes (11 ml I think) and it’s not too expensive.

Remember the evening when the guy who was smelling great pulled out his sample of FM Noir Epices and handed it over to me? Well, I’m wearing the sample right now. Don’t remember how he looked exactly anymore, but Noir Epices is wonderful. I’ve sprayed all over my clothes and hair and there’s still a bit left for the afternoon.
