SOTD 7.1 – 13.1.2019

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 7.1 – 13.1.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Smelling sensational in Le Mat this morning. My sample is almost thunkable. It’s really gone the distance tho, because this is an extrait de parfum and does not need a heavy application. It’s also one of the few roses that I can wear. The combo of rose, immortelle and patchouli on my skin is positively mesmerizing. Super choice for this -23C morning.

  2. Today I’ve been wearing Kolonya by Rasei Fort.
Don’t let its name fool you. This is fine fragrance and at least EdP concentration.
I got my hands on the whole package today. The carved rosewood container is so freaking beautiful.
I’m trying to talk GentSac and Men’sBiz to stock in online here in Australia so everyone can get one.
Rasei has such a limited amount he’s going to number them. WOW!

  3. First Cut is getting its first outing and I’m loving it😍 It’s the smell of warm summer’s days around here when the farmers are cutting hay. Getting a citrus hit too. I’m slightly reminded of Fougere Bengale, though I don’t quite know why 🤔

  4. Continuing with my NEST mini rollerballs and Citrine. Lemon Blossom, Lotus Flower, Freesia, Dew Drop Accord, Precious Woods. I get a lovely lemony opening and 2 hours later some vague woods which lean cedar (which is not a favorite), only the barest hint of citrus left. Super disappointed, but not surprised as I have yet to love any of these from this set (2 left). Although I have a mini rollerball of Cocoa Woods that was a Sephora reward and I really like that one!

  6. Beaufort’s Couer de Noire. Goes surprisingly well with dust. Which is just as well, as there was a lot of it stirred up. Finally starting to feel better but I’m still pretty wobbly and though I’m pining for the gym and the outside world, that’s clearly not a good idea yet. So I’ve been pottering about at home trying to be useful. I am a *terrible* housekeeper, but I’ve dusted and tided the perfume collection, sorted out and refolded everything in the chests of drawers and put away the last four loads of laundry–told you I was a lousy housekeeper–and just started to do a shelf-by-shelf sorting out in my study, when I realised I was *done* for today’s wild action. Nap time. Oh yeah. exciting day. Hopefully awake enough later to do some writing. But I’m still madly spacey. Stupid virus.

    • Is Couer de Noire also a complicated scent like the rest of the Beauforts? I guess I’m not man enough to wear them 😉

      • I think this might be the easiest of their scents “hell or highwater” series… for me it’s pretty relaxed, but my comfortable might be someone else’s scary-weird. I’d say this is more kicking back in a leather armchair and smoking your pipe and writing about your adventures with a leaky fountain pen by candlelight, than the others that might be more about swigging rum during a blood-soaked gunpowder-clouded sea battle… but your mileage/fathoms may vary 🙂

  7. oh, and brigitte: I dug out my sample of L’Air Du Desert Marocain to re-try yesterday, after I’d been complaining last week about how it was unbearably HUGE on me. I don’t know if it has changed in the five years or so it’s been sitting in that tiny vial, or my skin’s changed again, but, two wee spritzes was just bloody lovely to wear. And it didn’t turn into a fallout cloud that could take out the entire population of the city. Huzzah! Yes, the mini has been added to my wishlist…

  8. Dior Ambre Nuit for work today. I have used nearly half of my 40 ml bottle, so need to get myself another warm scent, possibly heavy on tonka bean. It started snowing tonight, but temperatures around or over zero means it will turn into a wet mush by tomorrow noon.

30 minutes strength training today after physio and oh did I have to work to move the usual weight, so happy it’s not free weights. Still not really into the programme for use at home, only did a few stretching exercises during the weekend.

So, all of you with shiny resolutions for the new year: Yesterday I tested my new waffle maker and also ate a substantial amount of dark liquorice. Impossible to resist the Dutch treats from a care package! In comparison eating a small bar of dark chocolate is hardly worth mentioning. I am getting back to more sensible behaviour soon.

    • Dutch licorice!! Yummy, yummy. Was it the DZ? Dubbel Zout? Or the Munt Drop? I love them all.
I received a small bag of the DZ in my stocking, but they were stale 😧
Still good and salty, but far too hard.

Have a late meeting at work but if I can muster the energy might try to squeeze it in tonight. And I am eating lots of protein and good fats and gained two pounds 💪💪💪 but drinking all of this water is killing me because I need to pee every two seconds!

My detox goes well and I’m surprised how easily I handle the “no coffee and light food” part. I also avoid every kind of temptation and don’t go anywhere near sweets and yummy kitchen smells.
Tonight I go on the second date and I’ll wear FdB because it makes me feel sooooo good 🙂

  13. Juliet Has A Gun – Mad Madame today. It’s another rose-patchouli combo. I think their Lady Vengeance is very similar but I don’t remember it so well anymore. Anyhow, it’s nothing revolutionary but I think the crowds would like it because it’s straight, simple and strong.
Today I’ve cheated on my detox plan and had a coffee in the morning. I’ve noticed that I’m becoming slightly grumpy. Maybe it’s the restraint, maybe the stars but it’s definitely not good. And when I got up yesterday after working on my laptop I suddenly had back pain which got worse since then 😦
The second date was good though 🙂 I try to keep it slow and controlled, just for a change.

  14. Last day of NEST mini rollerballs. Yesterday was Black Tulip – went all powdery on the drydown and I couldn’t wait for it to wear off. Today is Indigo which is starting out promising, but I’m going to hold off on final opinion because several others started that way as well. At least this one has fig, which is a favorite note. I feel a little bad because my sister-in-law was so excited to give this set to me – I just don’t think the house style is “me”, although I like Cocoa Woods (Sephora reward rollerball). Do people swap rollerballs? I feel a little weird knowing that they have touched my skin but I really don’t see wearing most of them much again given the size of my collection and how many true loves I have.

Found a bottle of Cinema Festival d’Ete in a box I had hidden out of view. Been wearing that and not sure how I feel about the slightly citrus popcorn vanilla. A strange one.

Really finding this change from apprentice to qualified mentally tough. I’d love to see the system changed. There is a huge gap between learning mechanical theory and the practical doing of a job. I am not sure I am ever going to be the mechanic I had hoped I’d become. Feeling quite disillusioned and spiritually drained at this stage.

My message to wives who have mechanic husbands – he earns every cent!

    Like

    • Give yourself time Kate. It’s a steep learning curve but soon the jobs that required a lot of mental focus will become second nature. My Dad was a mechanic and had to transition from the way cars were built in the 60’s and 70’s to the increasingly computerized and electronic components that started being used. He was a dash man. Did all the electricals in the dashboard. Back in the 70’s he drove me to school in a Corvette. The client wanted a TV in the dash. That was some innovative work for the time.
      You got this Kate!

      Liked by 1 person

    • Wow, Kate, I hadn’t realised you were an apprentice. Such an achievement, I take my hat off to you. Same as any other job the doing is a different animal from the theory. Nobody ever waltzes into a job knowing exactly what they’re doing. Sometimes it’s flying by the seat of your pants, mixed in with a bit of spoof, with a sprinkling of bravado. The learning really starts when you’re under the bonnet, where you get to grips with the actual nuts and bolts, much as a surgeon can’t perfect their craft on a cadaver or with their nose in a book. You’ll be good, give your head a chance to settle. You’ve got this!

    • It’s only the beginning Kate and after you’ve experienced a few small successes you’ll feel better. No one was an expert after finishing the studies. It takes time and determination. If you want it, you’ll get there for sure.
The no buys should be no problem in the first ten days but the more we comment here, the more stupid ideas I get 😀

  18. Been MIA so far this week because I have been boring. I have decided to thunk a decant I have of TOm Ford Mandarino di Amalfi, given that we have a hot spell coming on. Not much point telling you the same thing every day. It’s a competent citrus fragrance that, weirdly, does not have mandarin in its notes. It doesn’t last a huge long time on me and I won’t be going FB at its price.

BTW, what do you guys do with an emptied decant when it’s a nice bottle?

Finally, my “this year’s fragrant buy” arrived (see Saturday question). It was eShave Vetiver Lime shaving oil. I broke it out this morning and was greeted with a fantastic lime smell. If only you could buy this in a fragrance.

    Like

    • Vetiver and lime sounds like a beautiful refreshing combination.
To answer your question – I keep it, of course, although I can never clean it thoroughly enough to refill it with something else. It stays here and takes up space….I hope that’s the answer that will encourage you to do the same 😀

      Like

    • The shaving oil sounds fab, great pairing of lime and vetiver.
I don’t hang on to the decant bottles generally. With one exception. I have had one that I got as a present for Christmas 1984. It’s about 5ml and black lacquer with a pattern of tiny dots and swirls in white. It has never leaked or evaporated the contents. I wash with soapy water, then fill with vodka. I leave that to sit until I remember to empty it, then leave it to air dry for ages. Does a pretty good job of killing previous scent.

      Like

    • What cassie says…I clean it…similar way (soap and then alcohol and then air dry for days). I too keep lovely looking bottles and good refillable decants.

      Like

    • I have had an idea for the decant. It really is very well-presented, with a gold label very similar to the TF labels. Rather than try to re-use it, I’m going to leave just a little bit in it and donate the remainder to the op shop. Perhaps the op shop karma goddess will reward me.

      • Sounds like a plan Greg. A lovely thought. What you really need to do is write to me, so I can send some samples to you and then when it’s super hot next week you will have some new things to sniff coz it’s too hot to go outside. And it’s gonna be hot coz the hot weather is hitting ol’ Radelaide tomorrow and early next week ☀️🙁

        Like

    • TF sounds great. I keep decants and usually manage to get rid of the scent: first I fill them with an eau de cologne (I mean the actual thing, something like 4711. I buy a cheap Russian one) and then with pure alcohol. I’m a bit of a germaphobe so I use the decant to wipe my keyboard, my smartphone etc. After a few cycles the scent is gone, and I can fill it with whichever scent I want to take it with me when I go out or travel.

        • On top of all that tea, no wonder you’re peeing all day! For a tiny, I’d say that two to three litres liquid in total is plenty (That’s what I aim for, even when training. Extra litre if I take a sauna, though, or it’s super hot out.)

          Like

          • I cut back on the tea during the day and it seems to be helping….can’t go beyond 54 oz though right now…what is that 1 1/2 liters? Not sure. I read somewhere that you should aim for half your body weight in ounces so I am already over the allotted amount if that is correct.

When we were in Lush some solid perfumes fell into my hand, just like magic 😳 😉 I was “guided” by the always lovely Jysotna and went for Breath of God, Cardamom Coffee and Rentless. 38. I want to know how everyone keeps up with the comments here – so many! I’m on my phone usually and it’s almost overwhelming to scroll all the way down to post.

Today I’m in Alaïa. Unusual, both the perfume and the fact that I like it (perhaps not love, but I found it at Tj Maxx for $17 so it’s ok to just like!)

From the bucket, 31 Rue Cambon…the juice is dark so I am guessing vintage EDT…delicious…I am practically crosseyed because Mr. M and I just spent six hours filling out financial aid forms online for just ONE of the Marzipans…I will be ranting about this on the scent diary post so get ready!!!

    • OK I am not going to rant tomorrow. I said enough just now. It is what it is…I just wonder if things are different in other parts of the world. In the States the colleges have become nothing but businesses and will bleed you dry. It’s quite common now for kids to be graduating college 200K USD in debt (basically a house mortgage) And to get any sort of financial aid you have to jump through hoops no matter how bright you are and also be very poor on paper. The days of MERIT scholarships are gone.
      Rant over 🙂

      • Wow, that sucks! But then again, we have no such thing as scholarships, merit or not, in Russia, only orphans get some kind of advantage.

          • Not everyone can afford it, that’s for sure. I was lucky to have gotten it ten years ago. It was before kids started having SATs, I only had to have excellent marks for all the subjects we studied, and this provided me with a sort of school certificate cum laude and an actual silver medal 🙂 I actually managed to get accepted into university for free but of course I had to rent a room since there were not enough rooms in the dorm. We don’t usually have student campuses so students have to rent rooms or flats, and it’s never cheap. Well, at least I got my education for free. Like I said, nowadays only a few kids per year, usually those are orphans, can be admitted to uni without paying any fee.

          • Here now in the States not only the SAT but SAT subject tests (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Math 2, etc) are required for the more competitive schools…plus they want a huge amount of extracurriculars and community service. On campus living situation is crazy cost wise too…the dorm rooms are the size of a shoebox and you pay about 5 grand per semester… the food costs are 3K per semester of which the student only get 800 dollars to pay for food (which is horrible)…the rest of that money goes to administration, food workers, supplies, etc. Plus the fees…each semester about 2K in fees 9/10 of which are for things my girls don’t even use…like a said, it’s a HUGE money making business.

      • Just when I was thinking how hard done by we are here, you remind me that we’re not. At all. It’s really outrageous how much it costs there to get on an undergrad course. My friend has put one through, with two more in the pipeline. My mind boggles at the figures.

        • OK so I am not unreasonable for ranting then 🙂
Even the state schools with room and books are now close to 30K. And everyone is applying to them because they are the most “affordable” so competition is fierce.
This is why the student loans in the States are in the trillions.
Your friend is like me..three to get through. Two in and one heading.

          • It’s outrageous! Education should never be a business. All schools outside of the public sector should be on a not for profit basis. It’s a very unfair system when the brightest are effectively locked out of further education if they fall between rich or poor. I understand your rage, totally.

      • Have you ever considered sending your mini Marzipans to Europe? There are branches of US colleges mainly in Eastern European countries and they are waaaayyy more affordable. My daughter went to an US college here in Croatia and many students were from abroad, even from the US because when you consider the costs of living and renting an apartment and even plane tickets twice a year it is much cheaper than the same college in the US. After graduation they get both diplomas – a US and a Croatian one.
        Just an idea…

      • Oh dear!! I feel so badly for you and the Mister. What a miserable rigmarole. We have some excellent universities both here in Montreal and the rest of Canada. McGill Univ, Waterloo, Queens, Dalhousie….and, not surprisingly a significant American student body. You guys get bled dry down there for post-secondary education!! It’s bloody-well criminal to my mind. When my girls were studying, one at McGill and one at Concordia business school their tuitions were around $5000-$6000 per year. Student loans were and still are painless to procur. Obviously, good marks and extra-curricular involvement remain important aspects of the admissions process but it remains an affordable and accessible option for most families. I get furious when I read about higher education in the States. It’s becoming a privilege that only the wealthy can afford! Don’t get me started! You really have my sympathies. It’s a terrible burden to place on parents and students who just want a good education so that they can work and provide for themselves. Disgusting 😡

        • But the saddest thing is that everyone is being steared into to get a college education so it isn’t just for the wealthy! However, the poor students get the free tuition from government grants. The rich don’t care because they can afford it. Those of us in the middle have to pay up the wazzoo :(. If you saw what college administrators make (it’s all on the internet now) you would understand the high cost of post secondary education (we are talking 625K per year for state college administrators…and their pensions are slightly below 500K per year). The banks also profit from this because they make loads of money off the interest from student loans (most private schools are now in the range of 70K per year) It’s a crime. And the worst part is that when you have a child that has extraordinary grades and extraordinary SAT and SAT subject scores they still don’t get scholarships because there is no “financial need”. When I went to college I was paying 39 dollars a credit. Those days are long gone.

OK..on to perfume!!!! Cuir Cannage on the left wrist (smells like wintermint to me!) and Bottega Venetta Absolute on the right wrist (oooh soo good!!)…I am making a huge dent in my bucket! and don’t have to many more to test!

  41. Testing Pink Manhattan now. Never heard of this one. It has an oily consistency. It’s sweet as in fruity sweet. I forgot that I also tested some of the mini bottles last night too….Prada Candy, Mon Guerlain and Miu Miu…I told middle one to return the minis when she is done with the juice as they are adorable and will be part of my Christmas ornament collection. She also took the decant of Miu Miu Blue. The girls have several friends that are into fragrances so I told them both to share what they have as very few of those girls even ventured into niche (but now they will 🙂 !!!).

  45. Testing Casablanca again today thanks to the marzipan enabling. I can really only wear this on weekends or after hours – way too much for work. It is truly a beautiful perfume but I’m not sure I would buy the bottle. Even the 13ml travel is $95; I know it’s an extrait and would last forever but I don’t need another weekend/evening only perfume, sadly. (I realize that in today’s perfume math under $100 is practically free but my budget doesn’t stretch that far!)

    • If you can do it decant your sample into a vial and apply sparingly. One work days it was too much to spray. I almost feel like Diane needs to sell it in 1/4 oz dabbers. If you think about it it’s a higher concentration than the Chanel extrait but still cheaper. But that’s the type of bottle it needs.

I was again socially active during the weekend so less active here 😉 In the evenings I went to clubs with live bands playing disco tunes and Saturday morning I went to a great yoga class where a friend of mine had her examination after her teacher training. Today my arms, shoulders and back hurt like crazy but I’ve rediscovered how much I love yoga. Damn, why does a day last only 24 hours…?
SOTD – Soir de Lune. Everybody noticed it because it’s rather strong and I had to wear it both days in a row because my hair and skin smelled of it even after showering. Sample thunked!

          • my teacher does what she called a “vinyasa flow” class and offers up lots of modifications..so depending on what you are feeling you can make it an easy or challenging class….as a former professional ballet dancer I like to sweat and feel sore the next day so I always try the most challenging asanas..not that I can do them all at my age but I at least like to try. I really need to get back to my daily practice at home…this and meditation….I have been such a slacker with both….
