New Sniffs + Thunked: 10.1.2018

Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

OK I’m adding a THUNKED section here too. It’s becoming an APJ obsession and I love the idea of us using our fragrances and hoiking the vial, decant or bottle. Thunk is the sound of an empty hitting the bin so you must empty it for the thunk to count.

Anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. As always YMMV.

I’d love it if you get involved: agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

New Sniffs + Thunked: 10.1.2018

New Sniffs:

Arielle Shoshana EdP

This is not strictly a New Sniff but I did get the bottle out after a hiatus and get it on my skin again. It is a freaking masterpiece. So weird and ultra high octane in the opening but the heart is absolutely heavenly. Passionfruit, citrus, vanilla, box and sandalwood. A seriously considered fragrance that is also TOTALLY FUN! Smiling the whole way through my wear.

Thunked:

Sa Majeste la Rose by Serge Lutens

A honeyed rose with bark and leaves. Very nice in this heat. I’ve had this sample for a few years and it smells even better than my memory of the first time I tried it. Maybe it needed more juice on my skin.

Jonquille de Nuit by Tom Ford

Thunked the last 1ml+ of a decant. Medicinal, strawberry,  green and daffodil-esque but which smells like the entrance to a swanky hotel on me.

Myrrh by Abdes Salaam Attars

Sweetly resinous, boozy and smoky with an animalic honeyed backbone. I thunked nearly the whole 2ml in one go. SO FRAGRANT.

Knize Sec by Knize

Thunked my LuckyScent Sample that must have been sitting around here for 5+ years. It’s a woodsy incense over lavender, some floral bouquet, light leather and a softly honeyed amber. Not the same powerhouse as Knize Ten but much more daily wearable.

Have you tried any of these? How did they work for you?

  1. Knize Sec sounds gorgeous, I’m guessing only sniffable in Europe?
Nearly thunked Sideris, it is so low in the bottle and I think too much air makes them turn quicker.
Thunkage pretty thin on the ground here though.

  2. I thunked a 1ml sample of Forte & Manle Amber Absolutely. I love it and am dreaming of a full bottle! Fortunately I still have a 2 ml sample from the Forte & Manle Discovery Set to see me through until that bottle becomes a reality!
I have sampled only the Arielle Shoshana from your new sniffs Portia. It was very unique; however, over the top passionfruit for me. I hope her perfume shop is doing well in the US.
I’d love to sniff the Myrrh! I have a custom bottle from Andes Salaam Attars made with favorite notes including Jasmine and Angelica, a tribute to my heart dog after he passed.

    • Kathleen, Amber Absolutely is gorgeous! It’s on my full bottle list too. A little more than I would usually spend on perfume but I think it’s probably worth every cent. Harem Rose is the other stand out for me.

  3. I thunked D.S. & Durga’s new-ish Amber Kiso. It was fine, but to me, most amber scents are all alike. I just smell AMBER. This is a strong, rather nose clearing amber and it’s quite long lasting. Not really my cuppa, but as it’s cold here in my part of the Northern hemisphere, amber is not a bad scent to thunk. I was just over it by the end of the day when it was still strongly hanging around. It’s rather nicer on fabric the day after than it is on my skin.

    • So interesting Cee,
You’re right about amber, they do all smell a lot alike. I have a mate who calls all ambers that are amber with just a few bells and whistles “another shit amber”. It makes me laugh every time because I REALLY like amber and so a little nuance goes a long way with me. I can smell small distinctions in them but anyone who’s not really a fan will say they are all same.
Yeah, they are tenacious mostly. A win for the lovers but boring as for the only lakers.

  4. I’ve smelled the Arielle Shoshana and the Lutens. Neither were really « me » but fun to try. I prefer the SL Rose de Nuit.

Back on 12/14 I ordered a custom bottle from Abdes Salam Attars as well, I expect it to ship soon as lead time is listed as 3 weeks, but perhaps a bit longer over the holidays. It is a chocolate incense patchouli. I would love to have a scent that reminds me of my heart dog who passed in July, but there is no particular note that reminds me of her. She had a wonderful natural smell to her fur and ears that is not reproducible. I am hoping that the new Papillon Perfumery scent which is inspired by her cat will be that scent.

  5. Thanks to Portia I’ve tried Orchid Man Frapin (a peppery fougere with hints of leather, are you kidding me with that “man” in the name?!), Divine (one of those tuberose scents I could actually wear, especially on a rainy autumn day); A Quiet Morning Miller et Bertau is in fact a spicy morning, and I like it! L’Heure Bleue is an old love but I don’t think I’ve tried a vintage edp before, it really is beautiful. The fifth sample is Mitzah which is, naturally, gorgeous but again, I think it needs warmer weather. I’m sitting home next to my electric heater, and yet my fingers are ice-cold 😦 I have a lot to look forward to, I guess.

  6. I’d love to try Knize Sec sometime: I love his bro and was wearing that this morning. And yeah, I can rock it while mr crikey can’t. (but then, he smells amazing in rose scents, and I just don’t. See also: Sa Maj la Rose. Horrible on me, sweet and smooth and leafy on him.) That Myrrh sounds gorgeous.

Nothing new for me this week. and nothing emptied. Though I did dig out every sample vial I could find and put them all in one big bowl so I can play lucky dip whenever I fancy. So maybe for next week!

  7. I haven’t tried Arielle’s perfume yet. I like the idea of a definite pomegranate scent. I actually saw the Knize with its bro in a very fancy perfume emporium in Germany. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the shop was closed. Even the men had their noses stuck to the windows!
As I stated earlier in the week my own new sniffs arrived. First Cut and Casablanca, wowee I have two new loves. And my Tauer Wowilla oil. It’s so snuggly, would love a perfume equivalent.

  8. Have tried Knize Sec and it worked better on me than Knize, which was Too Dude. I finished one of two Beige decants – the second might be eked out more slowly.

  9. I always struggle to remember how knize sec and knize two smell like even though I have both. They should have chosen different names.
