Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 14.1 – 20.1.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Today I had a delivery of samples courtesy of Ms Portia and wore Oud Bouquet, Lancome. It was a surprise, starting out a bit medicinal and drying down a soft rose vanilla wood. This one has legs, lasted hours on me!.

  2. Paul Schutze’s Behind the Rain. trying to inject a little brightness and energy into my Monday with this zingy but not astringent/sharp vetiver-mastic-grapefruit-pepper scent. But mostly I want to hide under a blanket and sleep. Still.

    • Oh I love that one! A couple of the newer Paul Schultz perfumes never made it to the US, which makes me sad. Have you tried them? You smell amazing regardless and I may pull out my bottle of this tomorrow.

      • I’ve not tried the two new ones. I keep almost ordering samples, and then putting it off until I’m next down in London where I could just sniff them. Tears of Eros is the only full bottle I have–love that hyacinth-incense. I passed on my travel spray of cirebon to my sister, and, though she digs it I kind of miss it…

  3. Wanting some easy vanilla today, I chose Dame Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. I just have the travel spray of this but it’s one of my favorite vanillas. Will probably go on a Birthday or Christmas list when it’s gone- the price point is good for my family’s gift budgets!!

      • Yes! its a good patchouli, with boozy fruit. I can still get that scratchy patchouli at the start. Not sure its really liking the cold of the aircon in the office – will see if it likes the heat when i get in the car later. I have a few other Keiko’s on my sample wish list to try xx

  4. Tonight Apres L’Ondee Extrait de parfum…. did not know it came in this formulation but that’s what the decant says….it’s very pretty….I might wear it again tomorrow and thunk it 🙂

    • aaannndddd….thunk….cause the middle one just smelled it on me and took the decant-LOL! She is surprising me because she used to love vanilla, lavender and citruses but lately is very interested in iris and powdery notes….she “stole” my Berdoues Violettes and Iris Nobile and Meteorites and I did not think she would be interested in those….but those are the ones she is choosing to take back to university at the end of the week.

  5. I wore Arquiste Nanban. Reviews gave me hope i would like it but it’s not my style. It is weird since it reminds me so much of Papillon Anubis which I actually seem to like. In Nanban’s defense, I have not given Anubis full wearing though liked it from the spray sniff while I wore actually wore Nanban.

  7. Trying out a bunch of stuff this evening as my samples from STC and Decantshop arrived. Long post alert 🚨 😁 Michael Kors Very Hollywood – floral jasmine, rather pretty, reminds me of something else? Hilde Soliani MMM – bit weird, Fragrantica says basil, incense, utter and cheese, yep you read right butter and cheese and you know while I don’t get incense I think I get the butter. And that burnt rubber smell. Alexandria Rome – says leather but I’m only getting leafy green.
Montale Black Line – typical Montale, smooth as and I love it. Bigelow Lemon Leaf – lovely lemon as the name suggests. Atelier Iris Rebelle – initial thought was paper or books, with black currant, rose and musk.

  9. Decided to continue with my neglected collection of Dame samples/travel sizes and sprayed some Dark Horse today. It’s a good one. I do wish Jeffrey had the edp available in smaller bottles than 100ml. Even though the 100ml is so affordable. He does have the smaller sizes in the oil and hair oil, but I prefer to spray. It seems like Dame doesn’t have the spray travel sizes any more (perhaps too many issues with shipping?) so perhaps I will need to buy the big bottles and decant and share!

  10. Chergui today, and plenty of its lovely warmth to counteract the greyest-of-greyJanuary-days, and the blustery north sea winds. I wore this so much in previous winters, but it’s barely been touched this time around. Second wear, maybe?

Small cat went in for dental surgery today… and came back with all her teeth intact. Hurrah! When the vet did a thorough cleaning, they found out even the worst looking tooth was still sound. Mr crikey, however, has a sliced hand from the extreme cat-juggling routine this morning to get Atkins into her crate.

  18. Oh, er, right, ok, it’s Monday still, no?

What the hell happened to this week?

Backtracking, I can’t remember what I wore Monday. Tuesday I Was up to my armpits in fish tanks so I didn’t bother. Wednesday I wore my Acqua di Biella number 1 for a trip to Melbourne to meet up with and buy from a perfume friend there (and boy did she surprise with with some big news).

Today I wore Heeley Sel Marin to deal with the 37C heat here. It worked very well.

It was my op shop day today, and I noticed a lovely T2 presentation box there, which must have had T-bags in it. I bought it for that purpose but when I got home I took another look at it, and I now have the perfect box to store all of my different sizes of samples and decants. Win!

    Like

    • Sounds like a good and busy week Greg. Sel Marin is wonderful in warm weather.
What is it with the fish tanks? I’m curious…

      Like

      • Fish tanks; I keep two aquariums: a coral and reef fish aquarium and a small freshwater aquarium. When they get cleaned out there is really no point spraying perfume because I am going to be up to my elbows in salt water.

The news? Well, I don’t know if the lady is a member here or not. She might be, which means I probably shouldn’t be making announcements on her behalf. But it was very good news to hear.

I forgot to mention my thunk on op shop day. I bit the bullet and gave away all my Tom Ford samples.

        Like

        • Interesting. I suppose your aquariums are huge. I think watching fish in their natural environment is one of the most relaxing sights.
Thumbs up for your thunk. I believe it was not an easy thing to do.

  23. Nicked some of Mr Crikey’s Eau de Merveilles this morning–it stays polite even on very warm skin, and today was a cardio-oh-no! day at the gym after my rehab work so that skin was beyond warm. Back to home territory of lovely but slightly weird leather with The Zoo’s Club Design for afters (and really enjoying the hint of lily in there today).

      • I think EdM is pretty lovely 🙂

Cardio is just *dull* as far as I’m concerned. There are very few things I can do, so it’s a low-resistance elliptical or nothing. I can’t walk fast enough to get significantly fitter. And these are relatively new additions, so I have to stay very aware of what’s going on in my leg. I miss the days when I could use a rowing machine or cycle. And I don’t half envy runners who can go out into the wilds or streets…

        Like

        • Precisely that. Dull. I ‘have’ to do walking to manage peripheral artery disease. Can’t run anymore on account of dodgy knees but I used to love it. I add biking in summer tho, but that’s an impossibility most of the year here. Outdoor cardio is much preferable.

          Like

        • Those rowing machines with different programs are motivating me to try to progress little by little. My ankles and knees tolerate it well, too. It is a real challenge to find cardio activities out of water for some of us with restricted movement.

Just so you know, I got a sample of Salome, Mugler's Chyprissime and VINTAGE MAGIE NOIRE!!! I almost fainted. I've only opened the cap and it smelled sooooo fantastic. I think I'll enjoy it that way first and then use it for a special occasion 🙂
SOTE will be Chyprissime – I've tried it for the first time and it reminded me of the reason why I love chypres. Because they're the best. For me.
As Cassie said: One of them may be the Man-Magnet 😛 I'll let you know…

    SOTE- Mistral Patchouli

I am contemplating taking a break from thunking for a week and focusing on my neglected essential oils….work and home is stressful and I think I need some e.o. aromatherapy…plus we are getting a massive snow storm and severe dip in temps so the eos are very comforting as I cocoon…

      • In the cold weather I adore all base notes…labdanum, frankincense, myrrh, patchouli , vanilla, cedarwood, sandalwood, fir balsam absolute…….but I also really like lavender and when the weather starts to warm up florals like jasmine, orange blossom, neroli, tuberose, frangipani, pink lotus, rose, osmanthus….and I like citrus as well and also aromatics like eucalyptus, rosemary and carrot seed (which is very earthy and dry smelling)…orris is gorgeous too…honestly, there aren’t too many e.o.s I don’t like…right now I am really enjoying the new blend I made…very easy…4 oz bottle of grapeseed oil to which I added two cut open vanilla beans and 9 drops of cardamom essential oil…you have to shake the bottle well to distribute the vanilla bean flecks that settle at the bottom…the little brown dots look beautiful in the oil…I may put it in a rollerball and add some rose to it and send it off to a friend who enjoys my oils..she likes kulfi so it might remind her of it….

(I seem to be back to my sick bed. Might have been pushing my recovery faster than sustainable… all wobbly and droopy again. Damn it. Stupid viral nonsense. So, curled up while Atkins chatters at the beasties outside the window behind me, and hoping to sleep through the afternoon and then get some bloody energy back.)

Yesterday was a mishmash of all sorts of scent. I started with ELDO Eau de Protection. Nope, it’s not me. Interesting rose, but even on fabric it doesn’t feel like mine. The rest of this sample needs to find a new home. Then post gym shower, decided to go for some department store highlights: LPRN Black Perfecto during the day, and Bottega Veneta for bed.

Wearing vintage Shalimar perfume for house cleaning and packing. Mr. LH and I have decided to spend the night at the in-terminal hotel at the airport which, actually, is not far. Less than a twenty minute drive on clear roads but with the snowstorm we’re getting…who knows.
I’m not bring any perfumes. I haven’t see green or smelled anything alive outside for three months and likely won’t for another three. My nose will be busy enough getting reacquainted with earth, leaves, grass and flowers. Not to mention sand and beach and pool. Trade winds. Mai-Tai. Open-air lobby. Rain forest. Hot skin. Hahaha! Anyone jealous 😈
Seriously tho, I’m pooped! Been working non-stop since Jan. 2. 10-12 hour days, very late nights and weekends. I NEED this.
Shout-out to Mrs. M! I think you’ve got a three day weekend but you’re also getting this storm. Break out the bathrobe and e.o.’s. Take it easy when shovelling. Our snow will be the light fluffy stuff which weighs nothing. I hope that’s what you get too. And, on the plus side, shovelling is great exercise and you’ve got three days to get it done.

    • So paramela is not a wood but a shrub. This is the information I found out about it-

“DWARF PARAMELA (Adesmia salicornioides): Part of an expansive genus of flowering plants in the legume family, this tiny flower is typically found at elevations of 2,000-3,500 meters throughout Patagonia. Smaller than the bush-like Adesmia boronioides (the leaves of which are used as an anti-inflammatory in local traditional medicine), the Dwarf Paramela grows low to the ground, boasting tiny golden flowers streaked with crimson.”

Patagonia spans from Chile to Argentina

And now I am dying to try paramela (golden sun) essential oil!!!!
