SOTD 21.1 – 27.1.2019

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 21.1 – 27.1.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. I am wearing Nautica Latitude and Longitude because it is discontinued and I got it for a good price. The smell is kinda predictable but I am still liking it because it is what I imagine to be a fragrance that would have been released by Gillette as inspired by their aftershaves such as Cool Wave. It reminds me a lot of Gillette aftershaves deodorant smells from late 90s

  2. Still emptying my vial of Oranges and Lemons, so nothing else to report.

Oh, other than that I became a grandfather again on the 21st.

  3. Yesterday, Monday I ran away by train to a nearby town. Found a room for 2 nights. I wore Lemon and Ginger. Today, Tuesday, I had a full on freaking panic attack, and rang my husband to come and collect me .He didn’t come for about 4 hours!!! I wore PHI Rose de Kandahar, from a decant…..thunking decant number 1…. another in my sample drawer.

  4. Today it’s Mugler’s Chyprissime – a sample from dear Cassie. Finally a perfume with longevity. Interesting, the drydown reminds me a lot of Eau Sauvage. It must be the strong oakmoss-patchouli combination.

  5. Chergui. It’s bitter cold but getting warmer this afternoon. I usually don’t mind the cold but having been under the weather over the weekend and not being able to eat for a couple of days I’m feeling chilled all the time. I sure smell great, though!

  6. Huh, I guess I didn’t actually click “post comment” yesterday. Which was Neadertal Dark, plus a little Neandertal Light on the other hand to see how they play together. Very nicely, it turns out. I’ll be sorry to finish the Dark, but, I don’t think there will be an FB in my future. Cuir Cannage for late evening, that lovely cool elegant leather was a nice follow on from the northern coastal rocks-and-air-and-lichen of Dark.

Vetiver 46 this morning… a bright incense to help me out of the house for the first time since Friday. w00t! Light gym session (aye, I know, I know, but I need to prevent de-training with the Nationals coming up in a month!) and then back home to nest. Because, bloody hell, but I’m still so tired. Now wrapped up in several layers, and a good dose of Cuir de Lancome (merci bien, CQ!) and planning a completely slothful rest of day.

  7. Clarins Eau Dynamisante. Surprisingly, it reminds me of vintage Christian Dior Eau Fraiche which is as beautiful as it is expensive :). ED is, on the other hand, affordable. The only thing that stops from getting a bottle is that my decant comes from an older batch, what if the new formula is not as good?

  8. Finished my vial of Oranges and Lemons today. How do you people finish anything? It took me four days to get through half of a tiny vial.

My conclusion is that I really love the opening of this fragrance; such a wonderful citrus and neroli waft. I like the tea note too. However it doesn’t last very long at all on me. I’d be wearing this in the hot weather, so I’d have to be respraying to make it last and I think I’d rather be respraying a cheapie like Monsieur Balmain, Eau de Rochas or Mugler Cologne.

Anyway, I have now legitimately thunked something =, as opposed to selling or donating it. A first.

  9. Mr. M’s snoring and me having to pee and also dying of thirst forced me up…so I am wide awake! I sprayed on my natural L’artisan Cote D’amour which i have doctored up with patchouli oil, a vanilla bean pod and orange and mandarin oils….I smell good…like a sweet citrus patchouli bomb!

  10. Watched the Versace drama on netflix….finally fell asleep at two…up now for work…will go with Paramela…between that and lots of tea I might be able to wake up! I can also still smell the Regina Harris on my bathrobe from when I tested it a while ago…..can’t even remember what day that was!

  11. Guerlain’s Encens Mythique today. I’ve worn this so much less this winter than last, and it was feeling neglected.

I’m curious to know whether the repackaged version of this–now in a dark version of the bee bottle rather than the flat and gold-specked clear bottles–is much changed, if at all. It looks like it’s going to be on much wider release, but is 50% more juice for 50 quid less price… is it out of the realm of possibility that it’s the same stuff? Though they have done that before with the switch to Mon Guerlain from the small release version…

    • I’ve just taken a look at the bottle – both are beautiful 🙂
Wait? They will be selling more mls at a cheaper price? Something’s fishy here…

      • The original version was in a very limited distribution. But aye, I’d definitely want to test side-by-side before replacing my running low bottle…

  12. Today I have no flu but my nose is running like crazy. I must be fit by tomorrow for my trip!
K de Krizia is my SOTD. It says “limited edition” on the package and I don’t think it’s the real vintage stuff but I cannot find out where this came from. I bought it rather cheap on ebay a year ago.

  13. Testing Miller Harris Powdered Veil, half the tester sprayed and I can hardly smell it. It is very quiet. Pretty enough, light floral and faintly powdery but nondescript, with no oomph or presence.. I won’t be purchasing a fb of this. Not performing as I’d expect. Money saved!

  14. My mum is in hospital and I’ve taken her absence to be a boon. I was cleaning her bureau and found quite a few perfumes I had never tried. Old Britney Spears ones. I have been trying them. They pack a punch. Sweet, zesty, high spirited. Not my type of scents, but I have to applaud the quality of them. All are first issue versions, so pre 2010.

Then I found the Pure Poison I gave her. Sitting in full view of the afternoon sun and dusty! I was tempted to retrieve it. It is a vintage, so really needs more attention. Sadly, it still does not sit right on me.

  15. Regina Harris for bed…to say that I am tired is an understatement. Luckily Mr. M is taking the youngest to his volunteer job at the library…I would be falling asleep behind the wheel.
I am wearing the Regina now but leaving the bottle in the girls bedroom because I predict that when middle one comes home for spring break she will smell it on me and confiscate the bottle anyway. The bottle is stunning, btw, really ignites my bottle porn…very Middle Eastern in style.

  16. Packing my stuff for the trip. I’ve taken only perfume samples with me and I hope I’ll thunk most of them by the time I’m back. SOTD – Memo Lalibela…a rose with strong incense. Something’s not right here and I cannot define what. I just don’t like it. Will have to switch to something else later.

  17. Inspired by Undina’s post on her blog today, Ormonde Jayne Tsarina. Had forgot this was one of my choices for my travel set – I had been focused on the summery scents. It’s an elegant suede, soft enough for work which is always a bonus for me since a number of my faves are just too much for a preschool setting 🙄

  18. Miller Harris Peau Santal is getting a tryout today. Nothing earth shattering here either. Nice. But yet again poor longevity and sillage. These aren’t cheap and if I had sprung for a bottom I’d be very disappointed. But it may be a case of YMMV.

  19. Givenchy III layered with De Bachmakov. I was making decants for a new perfume friend: three different versions of vintage Mitsouko, three vintage Shalimars, The Different Company and a few more miscellaneous scents. Now I need to choose which ones from her collection I want to try, and I’m too tired (not from decanting) to even think about it. Life is hard, life of a perfumista is something else.

  20. Oh man it’s hot. Yesterday I volunteered to work a second shift at the store just so I could stay in the air-conditioning. Today is even worse. I have to give my Humanitarian of the Week award to the 4WD owner taking up two of only about a dozen shaded spots in the entire supermarket car park on a 45 degree day.

Anyway, yesterday I wore Chanel Allure Homme Sport. I’m really liking this one and, since i only paid $20 for about half a big bottle at a flea market, it’s turning into one of the best-value fragrances I’ve got. Today I’ve got DS & Durga’s Italian Citrus on. It’s not coping well with the heat, but then neither am I.

  21. Home from an exhausting shift at work…air con was working in the corridors, however the bedrooms were very stuffy, because there is no air flow. Anyway I wore Saffron Calligraphy, but was very glad I sprayed it an hour before I began work. Mental note…keep this scent for cooler climes.

  22. Having a moment with Mr Gardoni’s epic MAAI. So what if it’s a day of errands? I’m going to smell *AHMAYZING* everywhere I go.

Rozy VdE yesterday, and a dab of the extrait as well last night–a very kind extra from an eBayer I bought something else from–so I was radiating beautiful badassery while sitting under a giant moon in a 12thC cathedral.

      • Oh this is an entirely different little beastie. It’s not an aggressive powerhouse for starters. Rather, it’s more of a snuggly comfort blankey. Sweet vanilla with almond and jasmine, but for grownups. The one I have currently is edt which has moderate sillage. I previoualy had the elixir which is more interesting but is hard to get hold of now. Try it if you spot it, you may be pleasantly surprised.

  23. Has anyone but me noticed Portia’s new gravatar? it really threw me for a loop! But I LOVE it…
this evening I came home to an empty house…so what did I do? Made two oil blends-LOL!
First one vanilla bean, cardamom, rose and sweet orange
Second one- bergamot, bitter almond, carrot seed, labdanum, amber, cedarwood and fir balsam
Will let y’all know how they turn out 🙂

  24. It’s Straya Day today, so I thought I’d better wear something from an Australian deisgner. I don’t have many, and the ones I do have don’t seem very good for summer wear. You’d think Aussie perfumers would be all over that.

So I ended up wearing Gregory, the fragrance I made myself at Fleurage. It has everything plus the kitchen sink in it really, but I’ve got a bergamot and mint opening and a vetiver and sandalwood drydown, essentially.

  25. HdP Not a blue bottle 1.3 this morning. I should really like this blood orange and leather number but something in it feels scratchy every time I wear it. I think this might go into a swap pile for someone less of a wuss about woody-amber bases…

    Coromandel this evening. Smoooooooooooth. Yes.

  26. Been a funny scent week. Pushing myself to revisit my “like” collection. Nothing made me sit up and take note really. Ennui might be setting in. Or I don’t really enjoy summer scents as much. I did get immense pleasure from Irises by TRNP, No 19 edt, Light by TRNP and Rentless by Lush. The dirty patch in Rentless is very moreish.

I stole back a mini Beyond Paradise from my mother’s bureau. It was never used. She won’t miss it. She only ever wears the pale ones from Philosophy now. She was a hard core Poison wearer for YEARS. She cannot stomach anything harder than 2 sprays of Amazing Grace. I think the Pure Poson does get used, but on her clothing. I left everything else caked in dust. I am not sure if she used the samples of Deauville and The Only One whilst in hospital.

My eldest has been using his TRNP oils and edps. He is taken with Bulgakov and Mikhail. Both are robust and have transitional changes he likes. They also fit his socialist, Rick from The Young Ones style.

My youngest is still going strong with his Fahrenheit deodorant. It has been a year and it shows no sign of bottoming out. I think he likes the old school masculinity element. His tastes lean very Cary Grant type.

I might drag out the last of my No 5 soap bar and then go quietly with Coty’s L’Aimant. I need some gentle talc scent.

  28. I may be in seven layers of scruff, and wandering around the flat in fuzzy socks talking to myself while I try to get my head around a very dense essay about theories of craft…but I’m wearing some of my cherished Onda extrait today. Because some things are far too good and far too enjoyable to save for “best”.

  29. OMG! I am at Axil Roasters in Chadstone. I am wearing Tubereuse Trianon and secretly adoring myself. Next to me is a guy possibly wearing Baraondo or Rhinocerous and waving a gorgeous aura. On the other side of me is a woman wearing La Vie Est Belle so discretely. Together we are smelling UNBELIEVABLE! I do not want to move away.
