Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 28.1 – 3.2.2019
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

Shalimar Ode a la Vanille sur la route Mexique. 2nd in the longest perfume name ever contest to its sibling, the Madagascar version. I missed that one and stumbled upon this one which I bought blind (violating one of my rules but the bottle is so pretty 😳). Definitely my gateway to Shalimar – before I had this I wasn’t too keen on her. I now have a couple of versions in bottle, mini and decant.

Isn’t that frustrating? I tested a new one from Jeffrey Dame’s new line (JD Jeffrey Dame Mimosa Mixte) yesterday, the samples are in the oil format. Was really wishing for the spray – my dry winter skin was just sucking that oil up even with lotion underneath.

I am curious now what 80s perfumes you have been testing? I wore lots of stuff in the 80s and wouldn’t mind taking a walk down memory lane !

I’m super new to this perfume-thing, and I’m still a student and therefore skint, so I’ve been raiding my Mum and Aunt’s perfume collections and making my own little sample vials whenever I go over! I recently got ahold of some of my Mum’s old Samsara (I think actually bought ~*in*~ the 80’s) which I love but my flatmates said made me smell like I should be wearing curtains. Go figure.
I’ve also got (read:purloined, with permission 🙂 ) recently some Dior Poison and YSL Opium. I loooved the Opium… the Dior I think I’ll need to revisit! My Mum mentioned my Gran used to wear Coco by Chanel, so next I’m up there I’m gonna have a sticky beak and see if I can’t find any! I recently read something about Cacharel LouLou which sounds divine – so that’s on the list as well.
Do you have any must-trys for me??

Wow!!!!! You have some amazing amazing stuff to sample!!!! I wore all of the ones you mentioned back in the day! I will recommend Niki de Saint Phalle (that is one of Portia’s favorites) and Nocturnes de Caron (a staple in my perfume wardrobe since 1983).
My girls are also university students and I make sure to send them back with lots of niche and artisanal samples to share with their friends as everyone is pretty much cash poor and would never be able to experience these fragrances.
Coco is glorious but you must get vintage….same for Lou Lou…I wore that one in the 90s. Samsara from the 80s had real sandalwood in it (swoon!!!)….if you are near any thrift stores you might find some inexpensive vintage stuff too. Have you tried any of the Chanels? no 5, 19 or 22 or Cristalle? Those are also great. I mean honestly, all the perfumes from the 70s and 80s were fantastic in my book and back then they were so affordable! Even the drugstore stuff was great! (Charlie, Jontue, Jean Nate…).
Let us know what you stumble upon and what you are testing…even if you don’t care for it , it’s always nice to hear the next generation giving the old stuff a try 🙂

Monday I wore Guerlain Pour Homme, looking for the lime/vetiver combo I’m loving in my e-Shave shaving oil. This is not it; it lacks any kind of citrusy punch.
Tuesday I wore nothing. I was meeting the new grandson for the first time, and you can’t be too careful, given the allergies in our family.
Today was Malle Bigarade Concentrée. Very nice summer scent, but was gone after a few hours.
I had a good day at the op shops while we were down in Melbourne Tuesday. I had three “pops” (as in popping your cherry – the first time you find a particular brand). I was very pleased until we got home and realised that we’d left the Salvos bag in a shop 200 kms away. 😦

Growing up the kids teased me by calling me Bridget the Midget….in college my best friend called me Petite Brigitte (because he pronounced it the French way and thus it rhymed). As an adult I insisted that everyone pronounce it the French way because the Irish/ Anglo way reminded me of my childhood teasing which I never did like. Depending on how you spell it or pronounce it could be Irish, Italian, French, German or Austrian. Which would explain why Fazal thought I was Birgit from Olfactoria’s Travels 🙂

Happy name day, Brigitte! In the very beginning here on APJ I actually thought you were French. Also, it’s safe to say that the meaning behind your name is not ironic at all.

Diana- I actually am part French but after having done DNA testing recently turns out that what showed up was representative of many of the countries that you are all from (including Russia and even Mongolia!!!) It was an eye opener because I am a lot less of what I thought I was 😉
and thank you for the compliment! I would very much like to be “strong” 🙂

Small artisanal line from California. These we’re sent to me by a good friend because she thought I would love them. She is right. They are very natural smelling but rich and well put together. Gorgeous list of notes on each one and each one unique.

Wearing LPRN Black Perfecto for the cherry community project on NST. School is cancelled again, 3rd day in a row. First two days were for arctic temps and wind chill, today I think it’s for the snow that continues to fall, the plow and salt trucks are out in force. My son is thrilled. Me not so much as I am paid by the class – and my income from this job contributes to my perfume budget!!

Friday I wore Arquiste’s The Architects Clug, from a sample set that appears to be evaporating fast, so I’d better go on an Arquiste jag soon.
Today we have a big party and it’s going to be stinking hot. I’ve decided on Blenheim Bouquet.

Mugler Over the Musk. When I got the sample, I liked it but wasn’t all that impressed. Today, in the cold air it was amazing: diaphanous yet discernible, and not sweet at all.

L’Heure Bleue EDP.
For all my joy-filled adventures in the strange and adventurous lands of indie perfume, I still love this classic dearly. It’s such a reassuring scent for me–I don’t find it even slightly melancholy–so perfect for a little balance and beauty in a slightly unstable, fretful patch of doubt. Training in the freezing cold in the dirty, clanking, spaces of my lifting gym in the nerve-filled final weeks’ run up to competition, it was *exactly* what I needed. Also, I kind of love that most people know which my wrist wraps are by sniffing them. (There’s one brand that dominates here, and people leave them strewn all over the place.)

Not long, crikey, and it is done. I like your idea of a reassuring scent. More so when it is a classic.

LHeure Bleue is gorgeous. Good luck with your final run. I too love that your gym pals associate this fragrance with you and know that it’s your wrist wraps that always smell good 🙂

We are headed to another stinker; total fire ban across the state, already at least one severe fire going on in central Victoria. It’s already 35 and still heading up. I’m wearing Acqua di Parma Colonia Essenza and sitting under the aircon watching the cricket. That’s about as energetic as I’ll get today.

I’m wearing DSH Colorado – reached out to American Perfumer and Dave sent me a sample (along with St Clair Gardeners Glove which will be passed on!). I am loving Colorado . To me it absolutely hits the essence of the mountains and as we are skiers and have friends who live in Aspen, evokes so many great memories. I am supposed to be on a no-buy but it’s limited edition – I’m thinking I will need to pry a few $ from the monthly house budget for it….

I am taking Undina’s Groundhog Day perfume challenge and will be wearing Paprika Brasil all week long…I have enough of it and it needs to get some love and wearing and it will be perfect in this weather. I am also testing another new indie brand called Boyds of Texas…today is TX Lavender (you really have to be a lavender fan to enjoy this one…I could see some folks not liking it…I, on the other hand, do)
