Kolonya by Rasei Fort

Hi there Perfume Lovers,

Rasei Fort is the talented perfumer behind the Fort and Manlé brand. Kolonya is his first fragrance created under his own name, the start of something quite broad hopefully. The story he told me about the creation of Kolonya is so good I wanted to share it with you. Rasei has a demijohn in his studio that he’s been adding bits and pieces to for years. It is a combination and the culmination of very unscientific production. Whenever it’s macerated for a while he has a sniff and thinks about what it needs, then adds that and leaves it to brew. Finally in late 2018 he decided it was done.

He gave some ideas to his mate who works with wood for the packaging The finished rosewood product is beautiful to hold, every one hand created.

Because there’s no recipe, this is all there will ever be of Kolonya. Rasei thinks there will be about 300 bottles but isn’t sure if there’ll even be that many. About one fifth are already sold.

Kolonya by Rasei Fort

Citrus, woods, mint, lavender and pine are the major players on my skin in the opening. Tobacco and soft white florals are tempered by resins and a hint of ylang through the heart. All drizzled delectably over dry woods and vetiver. Dry down warms considerably and the amber/woods are backlit by a very sweet animalic musk.

Don’t be fooled by the name or the inspiration. Kolonya is Fine Fragrance, made with love. Longevity is good and projection subtle but noticeable, especially if you sit with someone for five minutes. They’ll be going in for deeper sniffs, promise.

LuckyScent has it and Peony Melbourne has it in store.
FINALLY we can buy in online at Fort and Manlé. I’ve been begging Rasei to get Kolonya onto the Fort and Manlé site because until now there’s been nowhere in Australia it can be bought online.

From Fort and ManléInspired by Rasei’s earliest childhood memories of time with his grandfather – his garden of blooming jasmine and lemon trees, the classic eau de cologne faded into his crisply starched shirt. Kolonya is an intensely personal scent, a true labor of love that echoes with the warmth of pleasantly fuzzy recollection. An imposing list of notes- citrus, spice, florals, moss, woods, resins – nonetheless coalesces into a hypnotically soothing whole, a smooth chord progression of gently wistful ethereal that sits softly on the skin, yet will surprise you with moments of profound recognition throughout the day. Not so much a cologne as the memory of a cologne.

Notes: Bergamot, Neroli, Petitgrain, Clove, Nutmeg, White Pepper, Bitter Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Blood Orange, Rosewood, Orange Blossom, Rose, Coriander, Galbanum, Rosemary, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Lavender, Angelica Root, Black Plum, Indian Vetiver, Oakmoss, Hay, Amber, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Virginian Cedarwood, Musk, Tobacco

Kolonya was my Best Of 2018 top pick and I stand by that. You need to get your nose on it.

Do you think you’d like it?

  2. I think I would love it too… and it’s actually in the realm of affordable for me, surprising given that it’s limited edition. May have to order a sample to see. So much for that no-buy!!

  3. Sounds like one I’d really enjoy, to be honest. I thnk I will be keeping an eye out for our Aussie perfumers more so now. Rasei, Dimitri Weber, Jocelyn and Teone seem to be really pushing themselves creatively and all coming of age as a group. Exciting times indeed.

  4. I really love it too! I got a sample from Luckyscent after reading your “Best of 2018” and ordered the bottle after sniffing once. This morning after reading Luca’s review, I have lavishly doused myself with the rest of the sample while considering ordering a second bottle!
