Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 12.2 – 17.2.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Envy your 1957! That will be my scent of the day starting tomorrow!
Today I’m wearing Maria Candida Gentile Burlesque. Beautiful blood orange, iris, rose, patchouli combo.

  2. Today I’m wearing JD Jeffrey Dame Mimosa Mixte. It’s a nice yellow floral, sandalwood and vanilla base, quite pleasant but I don’t think I need it. I tested Duality Woman yesterday, not so successfully. The opening is an interesting blend of citrus and spices, but it quickly went downhill on my skin to a scratchy vague perhaps patchouli and musk? Not really sure but it wasn’t good . The samples are oils, and I’m dry enough that they don’t have any lasting power, so that may be part of the issue. The Labdanum Doux was out of stock when I ordered; I might like that more.

  3. Naja.

Less great was the stinking-out-of-self earlier. I’d accidentally bought (and applied) a scented rather than unscented version of my usual antiperspirant. OMFG but this stuff was overpoweringly awful and distracting as hell when training. I’d never realised how much armpit one gets when benching…

  6. Terribly jangled today. Four hours sleep last night preparing for two important meetings. Was having coffee at 6:00 am and heard on the radio that a friend of ours and neighbour in our little borough of Montreal had been killed in a skiing accident this weekend. Tragic. Sudden. This family had everything. Beautiful home. Three happy well-adjusted kids. Tremendous financial success. Beautiful wife. Rock solid marriage. And super nice! I’m sickened with shock.

    • Portia said it so well, Saffy. Give yourself some time and be gentle to yourself. Don’t let the memories drag you down.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Good times and bad times are all part of your story, and the unknown future is also part of your story. You may not be where you envisioned yourself to be at the moment; however, have faith and trust that you are where you are meant to be. There is a plan for all of us, and I believe that you as well are going in a direction that will bring goodness and happiness. I know it is difficult to believe while you are hurt and lonely, but those feelings pass with time. Surround yourself with everything that brings comfort in the mean time.

  9. vintage Eau de Rochas homme, the beginning is a bit tough for me as it hits my throat but the drydown is amazing. Along with vintage Eau Sauvage, vintage Eau de Rochas Homme is one of the best citrus perfumes from last century. While Eau Sauvage is famous, Eau de Rochas Homme is relatively obscure

    • Hey Diana,
I think when Tuscan Leather came out in 2007 it was a good deal more ground breaking than we think it now. It wasn’t the first interesting leather but it definitely was exciting when it launched to have one so mainstreamly available.

      • I see where you’re coming from, Portia, and I concur, in 2007 TL must have looked like a revelation for a newbie to the perfumery world. It’s a pretty good scent, I just don’t feel that it’s a “must-have” (unless one has a really big room for perfumes only and isn’t planning to move houses soon, lol).

  13. No work. The roads are treacherous. Heading out in a bit for snow removal while it’s sleeting. Gave myself a spray of Leau Froide which lives in the youngest room. I might have to steal it back because it smells amazing. I think I want to wear it tomorrow. I could always decant because the sprayer unscrews. Wish all bottles came this way.

  14. Long day and it’s only 4:30 pm. Today I’m wearing Rose Magnetic from Essential Parfums. A 10ml travel spray that I won in a cafleurebon giveaway. It’s quite nice, rose, lychee, some vanilla in the base but there is CEDAR, which is a kryptonite note for me much of the time. Boy does my skin amplify it in certain perfumes. It overpowered the lovely sweet rose for quite a while, although in the drydown I’m not smelling it anymore. Not the longest lasting, skin scent after a couple of hours even with generous spraying. At 100 mls for $75, it’s practically free by perfume standards – the 10ml goes for $20.

I was wearing MAAI today, and enjoyed every moment of it (still am… it’s quiet, but still very present). Even while training. It’s a giant space, I wasn’t stinking anyone out. But I had my own glorious fragrant bubble around me and the bench. Yeah.

  16. Wearing Cuir Beluga after a couple of rough days. We’re sitting under 38cm (15 in) of snow this morning. 10cm more to come. Montreal is a winter city, snowfalls of 20cm are a regular event and just get ignored. But this is quite impressive. I’ll stay off the inter-city highways today. Mr. LH is already pounding around outside with his snowshoes. I thought he should strap a keg of brandy around his neck for people stuck in the snowbanks 😏

  18. First question: Does anyone know where in central London the Chanel exclusifs can be had? I have someone who can bring a bottle for me, but I’m still hesitating.

I’ve applied the last few drops of Amouage Ciel today, so that’s a thunk. Later applied Korres White Tea, Bergamot, Freesia. That one is subtle enough to be tolerated by most which unfortunately will be an important point for at least 2 months!

I’m in a care institution suspiciously like a nursing home, even if they call it a rehabilitation unit. I’m waiting for my foot to heal after surgery and am more or less totally dependent on a wheelchair since it’s my strongest leg they cut open this time, a larger procedure than 3 years ago ( the other ankle/foot).

  19. For the most central London option, probably the main Chanel boutique on New Bond Street, in the West End (i.e. near Oxford Street). Otherwise, they have a tiny store but full stock of the scents in St Pancras Station (the Eurostar station). Harrods and Selfridges, too, and on Sloane Street.

I hope the surgery went well and your rehab and recovery isn’t too frustrating. I know how time seems to slow down when you want to get going again, but your sliced-and-diced body parts aren’t ready yet.

    Like

    • Well, this is a place where less than half the staff seems to think rehab, most are so used to elderly people. Luckily the physio is a good one. Trying to keep my upper body strength is a struggle, given a lack of weights and fitness machines, What’s available does not really give enough resistance.

      Like

      • Frustrating! Can you ask your physio for some medium/high resistance bands that you can use for a range of different pulls and resisted-stretches for arms and shoulders? (There’s a great deal you can do with those in the absence of weights…even things like heavy-equivalent shoulder press if you sit on the band or loop it under a seat to get the right tension!)

        Like

        • Thanks for the inspiration to investigate further. I have access to a medium strength resistance band (green) with handles and tried using it for pull down, but felt it was more like dips. Off to google a bit, I also have those shorter resistance bands without handles, but admit I’ve seldom used them at home, so haven’t got a lot of experience with varied excercises.

  21. Checking in late, as usual.

Can’t remember what I wore Monday. Tuesday I was inspired by the Saturday Question and chose Heeley Vetiver Veritas.

On Tuesday night I finished a book about the polar explorer Henry Worsley. When he was on a trek to the South Pole is family gave hm tiny presents that he could carry with him and open on Christmas Day. His wife, appropriately, gave him a sample of Amouage Journey Man, so I wore that yesterday in Henry’s honour.

Today is Bentley for Men, but I think I misread the weather a bit. The booze and leather kicked the day off nicely but it’s warmed up now, and this may not have been the best choice.

    • Sadly the Floral Psychedelia was empty, and I wasn’t aware, so I had thunked it at some stage. Anyway got more legal and financial advice today, so I wore Carnal Flower. My sister took a day off work to help me because I am still a bit too emotional to handle everything.

  24. Looooong stint in the car today. I must have driven about 300kms. I went to Melbourne to collect some corals and did a bit of op shopping. Did quite well, even saw some perfumes, but nothing I wanted to buy. If anybody is near Glenhuntly a look into the Post Op Shoppe tomorrow might bear fruit.

I wore Hermessence Iris Ukiyoe. Very nice opening to this but I don’t think it lasted that great. Still a very nice one though, and Hermes are very good with the free samples if you ask nicely. (Naughty people sell these freebies on eBay for considerable money).

    • I think most of the samples on eBay are from naughty folks including SAs that hoard them and sell in lots. This is another reason samples are not handed out the way they were years ago before the age of technology.

      • Yes, it is very nice. One of several I sampled a few years ago in search for the perfect amber. It’s in my top ten list of amber perfumes, but I ended up getting 40 ml of Dior Ambre Nuit instead.

        Like

        • You preferred Dior Amber Nuit? Why so? I’ve been sampling as many ambers as possible this winter, trying to find a new favorite. My two favorites I own are Tom Ford Amber Absolutely and Parfum D’Empire Amber Russe. I appreciate recommendations from fellow amber lovers. I’ve never sniffer the Dior, but generally love Dior so am tempted.

          Like

          • Kathleen, I guess I bought Dior Ambre Nuit because it is so seamless and easy to wear, yet not boring (to my nose). Also, the 40 ml bottle is a plus and it was easy to instruct my relative where to get it for me.
I think Ambre 114 has more limited distribution. So, I might have ended up with either had I been shopping in Paris!

            Like

        • Thank you for the reply Ingeborg. Seamless and easy to wear is good for me; those perfumes get more wear time and therefore, better value despite the initial cost. I can only order from Dior.com in the US, and was debating on Ambre Nuit or Jasmine d”Ange for my birthday in May. I’m leaning towards the Ambre Nuit now, the notes sound wonderful.

          Like

            • OK, I will heed your advice to sample first. I looked and Surrender to Chance has Ambre Nuit samples. Is the Mona di Orio amber called Lux?

              Like

              • The Mona di Orio is just called Ambre, I believe. There’s the option of a travel spray or a 75 ml bottle if I’m not mistaken.

                Like

                • I see Ambre now on the Mona di Orio website. I love when travel size sprays are available. They offer free worldwide shipping on 75ml bottles (I’m in US). Another good option and thank you for the suggestions. I’ll be ordering some samples from STC to explore and determine if any FB worthy for me!
I’m not clear on your reason for hospitalization, but I’m glad fragrance, the frangrance community, and reading are keeping you company.
