Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

OK I’m adding a THUNKED section here too. It’s becoming an APJ obsession and I love the idea of us using our fragrances and hoiking the vial, decant or bottle. Thunk is the sound of an empty hitting the bin so you must empty it for the thunk to count.

Anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. As always YMMV.

I’d love it if you get involved: agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

New Sniffs:

Uptown Moonshine by DSH Perfumes

This is freaking gorgeous. Whiskey, tobacco, stewed fruit and spiced resins create a wonderful, olde worlde, hugging my grandpa at Christmas kind of vibe. This could easily be placed in the early works of Serge Lutens but with a saucy wink and brighter smile.

Vert et Noir by DSH Perfumes

I think I might have included this lovely before. Dark green describes it perfectly.

Caravelle Epicee by Frapin

Bought in Greg’s sale. A spice ship and a souk. Fabulously rich.

Nevermore by Frapin

Newly reformulated to be more accessible to a wider audience. I got a Press Bottle at the Libertine Parfumerie Winter Launches and am seriously LOVING it. Still that dark, inky, peppered coolness. I wasn’t really a big fan of the original but now I love it. Less weird but still quite challenging. I think nevermore will now find a much wider spectrum of fans.

Fire Amber Baby by Cult of Scent

Not literally a new Sniff but I’ve been wearing my sample and am reminded how excellent it is. Amber and incense but so much more than that. Eyes rolling in the back of my head good.

Aurora by Charles Wong

Salty citrus opening, a watery aquatic that features watermelon, some sheer florals that seem like honeysuckle, peony and mimosa that gives us a fun post-1990s modern freshie with fruit. Though it’s not something I would have ever dreamed I’d like my nose is repeatedly drawn back to its awkward weirdness. It gets creamier through the heart and reminds me of a Splice ice block but with Watermelon instead of pine/lime.

Thunked:

Nothing this week. BUM.

Have you tried any of these? How did they work for you?

  1. Once again haven’t tried any of your new sniffs. I am so behind the times LOL
Thunked a few bars of Jo Malone soaps with the help of the youngest Marzipan, Blackberry and Bay mfg sample and another tub of Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Butter with frankincense and myrrh.

  2. I’m not familiar with any of your new sniffs but Fire Amber and Uptown Moonshine sound wonderful. I’ll read more about them. My new sniff is from a vial of Mackie, early 90s fragrance. I thunked the vial because it broke while opening the top. I dispersed it all over my robe. This morning I was greeted by the most gorgeous scent! I’m loving these rich floral scents that smell like real perfume!

  3. Had lots of new sniffs this week, courtesy of Crikey. Gorgeous Dior Santal Noir. Have yet to meet a Sandalwood I don’t like. Ylang Ylang Nosy Be, yummy yellows. Moramanga, lots of white florals and a touch of powder. And Montale Golden Flowers, inspired by Portia from last week. This will need another wear or two, think I like but my jury is still out. Fabulous longevity on this. Have more samples on the way, should be here tomorrow. It’s my birthday so I’m allowed new samples.
Haven’t tried any of yours, Portia. I love the name Fire Amber Baby, and it sure sounds like the biz as well.
I think I thunked something? Of course I can’t remember, silly old woman. But I am certain that I thunked a soap yesterday 😃 One of my holiday haul soaps, Coffee & Cinnamon. Have Honey & Oatmeal on the go now.

  4. Now look at that! I won. 😂😂😂
I’m relieved. The floodgates are now open after two months of no new sniffs. First a mega-sample bonanza from Mrs. Marzipan and now a PPP.
Life has returned to normal and I get to play this game again.
Fire Amber Baby – bring it on. I’ve not tried it but wow I would love to!
In a similar vein I’m testing Amber Incense by way of Mrs. Marzipan’s generosity. Gor-gee-us! Reminds me of a blend of Tiger’s Nest and Russian Tea which are both big yummies for me. I’m completely in love with this. Having missed the SSS train, I doubly regret my oversight. If Laurie’s other fragrances were this good, I would have bought the entire line.

  5. I have not tried any of your new sniffs nor have I thunked this week. But I have hit my self-imposed 100 bottle limit so now I must do some weeding out in order to purchase anything new. I bought some samples recently that are future must-have purchases, but I do not want to feel like a collector and I feel that 100 bottles are as much as I can reasonably spritz at least a few times per year.

  6. New sniff this week was Bracken Woman, which i like a lot. But my 5ml decant will last me some time. Thunked a tiny sample of Absolue pour le Noir, which is totally uninteresting and just smells like Nivea creme.

  7. No thunks for me this week :)) I haven’t tried anything from that list but i’m interested in that Frapin house for a while. I’ve heard nice things about some of their fragrances and the prices are affordable. Congrats Marcella, happy sniffing 👍🏻

  8. I’m not familiar with any perfumes you’ve written about, Portia. Both DSH sound appealing, hope to try them some day.

No new sniffs, no thunks this week. To be honest, I haven’t even open my perfume drawer for at least 8 days: was wearing my Dusitas. They’re not empty yet but they will be soon 🙂

      • Wow! You have a backup, right? I can’t imagine you not wearing Niki every now and then.

I’m so bad at thunking but here’s hoping some of your “let-it-go” attitude will rub off on me 🙂

      • I’m always grateful for the introduction to Niki de Saint Phalle from reading your comments Portia. It is gorgeous and always in my rotation. It’s such a feel good fragrance for me.

  9. I haven’t tried any of your mentioned perfumes but I love the name Nevermore.
No thunks this week either. Gotta do something about it…

  10. Haven’t tried any from this week. I did thunk a bottle of L’Attesa and fortunately have a back up as I love love love it.

  11. Glad you like Caravelle Epicée Portia. Some of those ‘fumes in the sale were hard to part with, and that was one of them.

I win the thunking this week. I moved on 35 bottles in my sale and donated another 5 to the op shop. Would you believe that was only about a third of what I had on sale? Still some hard decisions to go.

  12. Fire Amber Baby; a fabulous name! But again, haven’t tried any of these.

No thunks this week, unless you count using the last drops of Tauer’s Amber Flush perfumed body oil and starting on a new bottle of the same. It really is calming and comforting and I have paired it with perfumes with amber as main focus, various samples.
