Saturday Question: What Fragrance Gets You Compliments?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)

Last Weeks Winner: Kathleen

Saturday Question: What Fragrance Gets You Compliments?

Compliments. I know we don’t wear perfume for others, or to get compliments, or for any other reason than we love them. Yeah, I get it. Here’s the thing though, if someone takes the time to notice and compliment my fragrance then I am walking on air for the next few hours. Something I love enough to put on my skin so I can smell it also made someone else happy. That’s a fairly powerful moment. Not only did it make them happy enough to enjoy it but they wanted to share how much joy it gave them with me. Amazing. Day made.

My Answer:

Lolita Lempicka EdP. I wear this oldie quite a lot, released in 1997 even after 22 years it’s still current. It’s easy, fun, smells good and has a joyous tilt that can turn grey skies to blue. Also, it’s cheap as chips at the discounters. Almost every time I wear it out of the house someone comments on how good I smell. All that violet, liquorice and fairy floss makes for an arresting scent trail that seems to tickle peoples fancy.

My Saturday Question to you is:

      • Holy crap!!! You have Jour Ensoleille???? I have only a 1ml vial left of that one. Does it remind you of Casablanca? Or vice versa? I think that is by far my favorite of the SSS line.

        • Casablanca definitely has shades of this, right on the opening. I only have a travel size of JE, but I’m happy to have gotten the last drops from Laurie. Pleeeze universe, somebody take over her business.

      • Believe it or not NOA has always garnered me the most compliments from children! It’s soft, sweet and subtle but a bit interesting with a coffee and incense vibe. Also a great one to wear to work.

        • Reading this, I remembered that I have a mini bottle of Noa EDT. I put it on and the top notes are off but not too long before the gorgeous scent emerged. The mini I have is likely original. Do you still purchase current available bottles Brigitte, and if so, has it been reformulated? Noa would be so lovely for the spring, I had no idea! I’ve only worn Cacharel Anais Anais in the distant past.

          • Honestly, Kathleen I bought a huge 100 ml bottle from fragrancenet recently for about twenty dollars. I would guess it’s original as I don’t think it’s made or sold anymore. Luckily the top notes are still somewhat intact.

            • and I realized I did not answer your question….honestly, I don’t know if it’s been reformulated but what I have smells pretty darn good 🙂

              • Thank you for your reply Brigitte. I was looking on fragrancenet and see Noa is available for a good price. I ordered a 1 oz bottle, it will be wonderful now for spring. I am enjoying my sampling this morning from the mini so much!

                  • I always check fragrancenet for discounted perfume prices, if they sell the perfume it’s usually the best price. Their customer service is very good as well.
I’m still waiting for my 1000Flowers sample coffret; looking forward to both 1000Flowers and Noa! I’m having way too much fun! xx

        • I love Noa, and it reminds me of my first exciting visit to Oz, as I brought it with me. On the way back in duty free I scored the matching body lotion in a two for price of one deal. I gave the other one to my sister. I have had a couple of bottles since then.

          • I put some on yesterday after the girls left. Noa really is such a pretty uncomplicated scent. And it seems these days I am all about the uncomplicated, especially since I work in a place where there are a few who would be barking if I wore a more “challenging” scent.

Sounds like you might need another bottle of Noa 😉 They do sell for very inexpensive online.

  2. None: I tend to underspritz, maybe that’s the reason. However, I got some compliments on my vintage Miss Dior and Midnight in Paris, both from the same person 🙂

    Kathleen, congratulations on your win!

  3. Thank you!!! Its a super fun surprise to see my name as winner!
Portia, I reached for Lolita Lempicka EDP yesterday, what a coincidence to see it as your choice for most compliments. Now I am complimenting you how wonderful you smell! xx
I also enjoy if someone mentions they enjoy my fragrance. My most recent compliments were from Chanel 1957. I’ve also had more positive responses to Amouage Fate, Bond Chinatown, and Stella (this one surprised me as it’s not one of my favorites).

  4. Gucci Rush never goes unnoticed, which I understand because it’s safe and Charenton Macerations Christoper Street, which surprises me.
I had this Lolita Lempicka with tiny golden particles in the bottle. Adorable!

    Like

    • Gosh you keep mentioning that Christopher Street one and I am pretty certain that that was one of the fragrances that was half price at the Indigo Perfumery sale that Gina mentioned not that long ago….might have been a good blind buy 😦

and I would compliment you as well if you were wearing Rush 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

      • I would compliment you on Rush, too. I adore it, ever since i first smelled it on a work acquaintance when it was first released. I still associate it with her.

        Like

      • Brigitte, you can order samples of the three fragrances from Charenton Macerations and then decide 😉 I have two of them and the third did not impress me that much but that may be because of my high expectations.

    • Hey Neva,
I’ve never thought of Gucci Rush as safe, actually quite the opposite. It seems very flamboyant to me. No surprise it gets attention, it’s big and in your face.
I love that people around you notice Christopher St.

  5. It depends on who is offering compliments, my own family or an acquaintance. My husband compliments the green scents I love, most recently Silences. I find that acquaintances tend to compliment fragrances with a vanilla note. Congratulations to Kathleen!

  6. Definitely my Cedrat Boise from Mancera and also Dior homme intense. But Cedrat Boise is the most complimented for me ✌🏻

  7. Chronic undersprayer here, so I don’t often hear compliments. My favorite was when my four-year-old student complimented my HdP Ambre 114. Recently someone complimented Twilly. My husband always complemiments SJP Covet. Sacrebleu Intense also occasionally gets a mention.

  8. Usually the ones that I like the least that include vanilla. But, lots of guys seem to comment on Guerlain LPRN and also on Tauer Rose Flash. I’ve had women tell me that if I were a man they would eat me alive when I wear Raghba and also CK One Shock.

  9. Anything rose gets me a compliment and sometimes ‘the look’ from my husband. I don’t think I have received a fragrance compliment from anyone else, but the Dutch are not quick to compliment on anything, and I think many people’s noses are asleep! Strange thing is my husband often gets compliments when he wears a fragrance I bought for him, Fragonard’s Homme Elégant (cardamon, incense, iris, cedar). But it might be him 😉

  10. Last compliment I got was on Memo Tiger’s Nest. Since I have too much perfume and rarely repeat a scent, there’s not much opportunity to get comments on the same scent regularly. I have also gotten compliments on Cuir Beluga, Chypre Vanillé, Encens Flamboyant and Orris & Sandalwood in the past.

  11. In the database that I do to track my perfumes and their usage, in the daily wear form I even have a check box for getting compliments (and another one for complains), so I usually record other people reaction to my perfumes. I can’t check it right now (I’m not at my computer) but from memory I haven’t heard a single compliment (if not to count my vSO) in a long while. Partially it’s because I wear it really lightly to the office (because of a couple co-workers with higher sensitivity to scents), partially because I see less people (too much work in a small office that leaves almost no time or energy to do anything fun). I need to change something… 🙂

  12. I usually underspray but I do like a few scents that wear large enough to be noticed. The only ones I have had compliments on lately (other than by Mr. Minion) are Clinique Wrappings, Diptyque Tempo, and St Clair Casablanca. The husband has been consistently noticing my sample of Koh-I-Noor so I’m going to have to buy a bottle before it’s gone.

      • I had completely overlooked its release but grabbed a spray from a tester out of curiosity the a few weeks ago and am already most of the way through a sample. As much I love patch in plant form, I usually find it either unidentifiable or an instant headache in perfume. Tempo is just surprisingly realistic and lacks that painful stab.

        Like

    • I bet you get compliments on Wrappings and Tempo (one being the Scent of My Life and the other a recent wonderful surprise) and I trust Mrs Marzipan’s taste to know that Casablance must be amazing although I haven’t tried it.

  13. The most complimented by a wide range of people is Donna Karan Gold, I think 🤔 My hubby compliments my spicier scents usually. Last week got two compliments from friends on Jour Ensoleille. It’s a nice little gesture to tell someone they smell nice and ask them what they’re wearing, I do it quite frequently. I never stop to think that they might tell me to mind my own business, and thankfully that hasn’t happened yet😀

  14. Until recently, none ever. I suppose I could count my wife saying something didn’t want to make her have a violent asthma attack as a compliment.

The sole occasion was when I wore Eau Sauvage Parfum and a young lady at my local cafe said “Oh, it’s you that smells nice”. That’s very rare; I suspect that most women don’t feel comfortable about issuing personal compliments to guys they don’t know.

  15. Thanks for the Saturday question Portia, I’m gonna to get my Lolita out to wear today.
Zadig & Voltaire For Her usually gets a compliment when I wear it and then Florabotanica would be next. Montale Black Oud is a favourite ‘night out’ scent and that usually gets a compliment. I too agree that peeps don’t like to give compliments to strangers or work mates etc. I’ve got a lot braver about complimenting – it’s sometimes a great way to find new perfume contacts /friends or find new scents.

    • Yay for the Lolita resurrection Melanie,
I’m glad this post has brought one of my faves back to light.
Montale Black Oud is a super big gun, how fabulous that you wear it a lot and get compliments. YUM!
Yeah, anyone who smells super fabulous is worth meeting.

Yes to perfume complimenting. I never was discreet about it.

  18. Based on the scents talked about here, we all *deserve* way, way more compliments. Because we smell bloody amazing.

I don’t get many comments, but I once had someone at a two day conference tell me that they had sat behind me in every session because I smelled so good (Chypre 21). Otherwise things that I remember prompting a positive comment is a right old jumble of scents: Bapteme du Feu, Dryad, Portrait of a Lady, Mitzah (one person on a train yelled at me for giving her a headache, two others yelled back that I smelled gorgeous. Net positive, right?)

    Like

    • Just got a compliment on Dryad yesterday. From a completely random person I’ve seen for the third time in my life and hardly ever exchanged a few words with. At the end of the evening before he went off with his family he said to me: That’s a good perfume you’re wearing.

  19. The only fragrances that I have been complimented on are Hilde Soliani Crema di Latte and Lavanila Vanilla Coconut–but it is a guarantee that If I wear either, someone will remark in a positive way and smile, even if it is just “I smell cookies!”

  20. I would occasionally receive compliments on my perfumes in the past, but they were rare. Then I started wearing Guerlain’s Pamplelune about two years ago and people are always asking me what I’ve spritzed on! Several of my girlfriends have started wearing it too (which is fun, because of course it smells different on them). I even bought a bottle as a post-wedding gift for a dear friend, because she had asked to wear some of mine on the day she got married, and I thought it would be lovely that she have her own bottle to remind her of her wedding day.
