Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

OK I’m adding a THUNKED section here too. It’s becoming an APJ obsession and I love the idea of us using our fragrances and hoiking the vial, decant or bottle. Thunk is the sound of an empty hitting the bin so you must empty it for the thunk to count.

Anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. As always YMMV.

I’d love it if you get involved: agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

New Sniffs:

Pacific Rock Moss by Goldfield & Banks

I swapped for a bottle from Kate and am thoroughly enjoying its salt water greenery. Just a little under the boardwalk briny seaweed and loads of fresh air over a herbal woodsiness. Not very far from some of the mens L’Eau d’Issey.

Jardin Blanc by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier

All the white flowers and some bulbs come delivered in a spring bouquet. Heady, lightly buttered and given a twist of greenery I could easily float away on this unbelievably lovely fragrance.  That starts crisp and warms through to a creamy musk & wood. I may need a bottle of Jardin Blanc.

Thunked:

C O Bigelow shower gel

I’m so sad that this glorious beauty is gone. Coriander & Lime is a brilliant combination. LOVED using it and the bottle was BIG too.

Toscanello by Profumi del Forte

New Sniff and a THUNK! Rum, Vanilla, Coffee (just a little), Milk (more like cream) and Honeyed Tobacco! What more could anyone want from a fragrance? rich, luscious and very cozy, Toscanello has basically been made with me in mind as the buyer. I’m hooked and 2ml was definitely NOT ENOUGH! This is everything I want my fragrance to smell of, I’m swooning. YUM.

Have you tried any of these? How did they work for you?
Portia xx

  1. I’m so excited for samples from Portia, thanks!!! I did get a sample of Pacific Rock Moss from Twisted Lily recently. I quite liked it. The sample pack included PdN Neroli Intense, which was the main reason I bought it (included a coupon for bottle purchase). By the time I went to buy my bottle it was sold out, I’m going to work my samples of Neroli Intense and Cap Neroli and when my next budget allotment comes up in May I’ll pick up 30ml of one or the other.

  2. Congrats, MMK!!!!
    Toscanella sounds great, P!!!
I have tried PRM, thanks to Tara C 😃
Thunked a lot this week….all the last bits of the “beachies” that the eldest mini brought home over spring beak- decants of di Sale, Mr Hurlots Holiday, Acqua Motu, one of several decants of Un Air de
Bretagne, my sample of Caron Pour Un Homme from Marcella and the pristine full bottle of Eau de Merveilles (the rest of the juice was previously added to a large decant and heavily dosed with lavender oil to make a lavender dominant fragrance)

  3. Congrats MMKinPa!
I need to get a sample of Toscanello for my brother in law. I just learned he loves sweet tobacco scents. I gave him my sample of Slowdive and 4160 Tuesday Heart of Havana and he was swooning! Does that count as thinks?
My new sniff is Oscar de la Renta L’Esprit. So different from anything I have. Someone did a recent post, Old Herbaceous maybe? Notes sounded good to me so I bought a bottle from discount site for very little. The bottle is so pretty and scent light and airy, soft floral perfect for spring.

    • In my book anything that makes its way out of your collection counts as a thunk.
I have been meaning to get my nose on Esprit and I see it as a safe blind buy from fragrancenet because it’s dirt cheap. I am wondering if it smells like the original Oscar? I wore that one to death in the 70s and 80s.

      • Esprit is the modernized version of the original Oscar, and to my nose there is a similarity in the drydown. It’s more citrus up front though. Reviews also say the drydown resembles L’Heure Bleue which I get to.
It was a very safe blind buy for me because of the price. My self-imposed limit for safe blind buy is under $30 if it has notes I am fond of. I can see myself reaching for this one in the summer, and I think it’s office friendly (we both have those fragrance adverse people).

        • Ok it’s definitely going on my list for the next fragrancenet order. The 100 ml bottle is only 20 dollars. You get the enabler pin on this one.

          • Ok, I’ll own enabler status on this one!
It makes me giddy with joy to find beautiful and qualitive perfume for bargain prices.
And this bottle alone is so pretty and girly. Like the original bottle but taller.

  4. Working on a bottle of Everbloom lotion by Shiseido. At first sniff it seemed way too sweet, but I think I can get through the bottle. After that, I might take a break from fancy scented lotions and spend some time with non-facny, possibly non-scented drugstore stuff.

  5. No thunks this week. I am really curious about Pacific Rock Moss, cause at some point was the hypest fragrance in the community 🙂 Does it has some similarities with Milessime Imperial from Creed? because of that salty vibe i mean.

  6. Of course I haven’t thunked anything. I’m too busy acquiring new things to try. My PPP arrived and gave me new things to play with. Loving the Patchouli Precieux, a true straight up patch. I had a quick swipe this morning of Aether Arts Saffron. OMG this is unctuous stuff. Will give it a proper wear tomorrow. Today I’m in my other newbie (for me) Angel Muse, liking a lot. Just visited my friend Gerry in the post office to collect yet another decant/sample package. Tore open with teeth and keys to get at it. I had a tiny inch of skin sort of free so sprayed on Lorenzo Villoresi Teint de Neige. Waaaahhhh, it’s gorgeous. I could almost lick myself.
I haven’t tried any of your newbies, Portia, but the Toscanello and Jardin Blanc have me written all over them. Darn it anyway, I’ll be off nosing for decants AGAIN.

  7. I haven’t thunked anything again this week other than two L’Occitane shower gels (verbena, of course! and an almond one). But I did just receive a coffret of Bottega Veneta fragrances and looking forward to digging into those this weekend. Pacific Rock Moss has been on my to try list since it came out and just have overlooked ordering a sample. Lemon and geranium together sound enticing.

  8. I thunked two large samples of Loree Rodkin Gothic I and II. Toscanello sounds fab! I have smelled Pacific Rock Moss, lovely summer scent.

That description of Toscanello makes me want to wear Kilian Black Phantom today. Yum!

  9. Portia, I haven’t tried any of your new sniffs (I’m not surprised, you always find some pretty rare things 😉 )

I’ve had a handful of new sniffs: last week’s gifts from Melanie and Portia have finally arrived, and that big beautiful package from a Moscovite I met on IG is here, as well. I know I’m supposed to give them perfumes some rest after a long journey but curiosity got the best of me. I don’t really trust first impressions when it comes to perfumes, my opinions will probably change in a while, e.g. Alexandria Fragrance Rome smells like Escada Magnetism clone but the lists of notes couldn’t be more different.
It’s very strong, too. Another one, 24 CARAT WHITE GOLD by Lattafa Perfumes, also got me confused: they say it’s an Oriental but I think it smells a bit like barbershop. Will give it a retry later.

Love, Diane by my almost-namesake von Furstenberg was made for girly girls who love candied florals so not for me but this cute gesture from Portia made me smile. And I’ve finally met a Dior Privé that I truly liked, it’s Cuir Cannage: lots of unsweetened (thank gods!) leather and some floral notes. Very nice.

What bums me out is that I seem to be developing some sort of allergy towards new chemical ingredients. I won’t name names but I just held a vial in my hands and I feel that my throat is closing 😦 It has never ever happened to me when I wear vintage but it has with a few modern ones.

    • I just sampled Love, Diane as well. Very fruity with an interesting candy and licorice dry down. Not my typical style either but rather fun for a change.
I wonder what new chemical is triggering an allergic response?

      • I’m not sure if it’s only one ingredient, could be a few different ones. Arabian perfumes (not Amouage) sometimes have this effect on me 😦

        • Interesting to figure out which ingredients trigger you’re allergies. I tend to avoid Arabian perfumes, but love Amouage. Thank goodness for vintages for many reasons!

          Like

          • Amouage is safe, I meant some lesser known houses (Wisteria, Top Perfumer etc.). The thing is, I got this reaction even to a Dusita perfume which was a real bummer since I loved the scent itself. I’m not sure I’ll be able to find out what triggers this reaction unless I somehow perform gas chromatography on all the suspects 😦

  10. Have not tried any of these but I am aware of the hype surrounding Pacific Rock Moss. Your description of it being similar to some ISseys kinda explains why it got hype. Shows how brilliant some designers are .

  12. Very boring this week; did not try anything new at all. I did thunk a mini of Versace Pour Homme. This is what I’m going to do with all my minis. Try once, keep if I really like it, otherwise send it to the op shop.
