SOTD 1.4 – 7.4.2019

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 1.4 – 7.4.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Finally getting around to sorting out my fragrances as I have wanted to make some decants for a friend for a long time, but I get nervous about doing them for some reason. Then I worry that what I send won’t be the right ones. So I’m trying to break bad habits. Spritzed a lot into the ether today, but on myself I tried Gianfranco Ferre Femme. Not sure that chypres are for me. Do they tend to perform better in cool weather?

    • I think I prefer them in cooler weather..late fall or early spring. But I also find that if one is sniffing vintage the top notes may be gone so they don’t quite smell the same as they did when they first were released. I think this might be one of the reasons some folks assume they don’t like chypres.

  2. I had just doused myself in MAAI about five minutes before the postie appeared with a drop-dead amazing perfume package from bakery royalty. My nose is full, so these treats will have to wait. Oh, the hardship 😉

      • Iris Silver Mist and… omfg, a tiny bottle of silence the sea. I have opened the latter and given it a sniff, and my eyes pretty much rolled back in my head at how amazing it was. I need to try that with a clear brain. Wearing some ISM now, and loving the cold toothy dust monster that it is.

  3. I’m wearing L’Artisan’s Caligna and I love it more each day. It was such a good decision to buy the almost full bottle. This one surely won’t last long.

  4. Today I noticed that a few bottles of neglected perfume in one corner and decided to wear them this week, they are all from the Chabaud ‘Lait’ collection (sweet milk and vanilla gourmands).

  5. I opened a box last night so sprayed a bunch of them such as vintage Van Cleef Arpels Pour Homme, L’Occitane Eau de Baux, Lauder Intuition for Men, and Givenchy Irresistible Fresh Attitude for Men.

Givenchy is going away though it may appeal to those who like mint. Intended to sell lauder intuition, too but decided to keep it for the time being since it has some similarities to chanel allure homme. Double-minded about Eau de Baux because I think I have two bottles but not sure at the moment whether there is a second bottle somewhere else and do not want to regret if I later find out I sold the only one I had. Van Cleef, not surprisingly, ended up overwhelming all others I sprayed.

  6. Late to the party again.

Monday was Paul Smith Extreme for Men, from a mini. The main thing I got from this was cardamom at the outset and some woody musk notes later. Nothing distinguished; it’s off to the op shop.

Today I’m wearing Tom of Finland. How could I not like this when they put a picture of me on the box?

      • It’s been an exceptionally short winter here. We have spring since mid February with a few colder days in between. I’m so grateful for that because it’s not usually this way.

        • And we had beautiful warm spring up to yesterday! Oh well that’s the joys of our so-called temperate climate (though I call it intemperate most of the time).

        • Opposite here…it was 29 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday morning…..way too cold for April! Nothing is blooming and no buds are peeking out (although they should be by now). I do NOT like this weather at all!

    • I was so happy when I realised that Dryad works in pretty much every weather, and shows a little something extra of herself in each variant. The more I wear it, the more impressed I am.

  7. Molinard Rose Turkia. It’s been getting a lot of love in the Russian fragosphere recently but even though it’s a pretty variation of rose & pepper combo, I’m not crazy about it.

  8. Got Tauer Lonestar Memories on today. Going out for a pizza and wine dinner tonight, and I’ll overspray it with Armani Code to civilise it a bit, add some mediterranean notes and keep the leather going.

    Liked by 1 person

      • To me, Lonestar has a bit of a bush-bashing, petrol-engine, outback-barbecuing vibe to it. Code added some bergamot, florals and tobacco, and also extended the time that the leather notes lasted until the late evening. Despite Val’s horror, the overspraying allows you to kind of start again, getting some top notes happening for the evening. Both Code and Lonestar are well-executed fragrances, and they are close enough on the fragrance wheel to go with one another, IMHO.

        • Definitely Code is a very well done fragrance, well it was when it came out. My hubby emptied a couple of bottles of it. Can’t say what it’s like nowadays, don’t know if there has been a reform.

  10. The week of business trips…last two nights I slept in different hotels and it’s getting more and more difficult for me to pack and unpack my stuff on a daily basis 😦 I was wearing mostly samples: Un Fleur de Cassie by FM (I got two compliments for it) and Carner Tardes (nothing special).

  11. Ground Hog day….NOA
although I might switch it up a bit soon as I am expecting a package tonight from AnnieA…..we utilized a “mule” to swap with each other to avoid postal issues 🙂

    • Guess what, Brigitte? My friend is going to US next week, so I’ll have a real live mule🤣 Cannot decide what to buy, though. I’m torn between Casablanca and a couple of Jeffrey Dames. Decisions decisions. Wish I was rich and I’d buy all of them.

        • I just got an oil sample of the Vanille Farfelue. It’s interesting – he’s not kidding with his description of this line – the opening was aldehydes and unexpected , then the vanilla came on . I think I like it – sadly oils don’t do well on my skin (at least in the winter, which isn’t quite over here) – I am just too dry.

          Like

          • LOL, So when you say it’s interesting, does that mean it’s not a love? My skin doesn’t do as well with oils either. I prefer to spray EDP.

            Like

          • I was curious about this one too!!! My skin also eats up oils as I am very dry too. The full size bottles are ridiculously inexpensive….38 USD for 50 ml. I think this new line of his will do well for that reason alone.

      • My girlfriend is also in the States for two months but she told me she’ll have too much stuff to bring home for her daughter so she said only “something small” for me. I’ve decided to buy samples from Phlur for testing. St.Clair and Dame were a bit too expensive for a blind buy of a full bottle. You’re right, one should win the lottery .

        Like

    • Aaaand I’ve just answered my own question. Just checked St. Clair and it’s only available in 30ml. Nope, not happening. I thought she did a 10 or 15ml option. I don’t need 30ml of extrait at this stage of my life, beautiful though it is. BUM😠

      Liked by 1 person

      • Oops, I’m an ass, there’s a 13ml option. I really should read through things properly instead of just skimming and then flying off the handle. Sorry 😐

        • That’s the bottle I have!!!! Get it….and some Dame Decants too. Jeffrey Dame is usually pretty generous with samples too so it will be worth it even if you only order one or two Decants

    • I was just thinking of Lilac Love today. I’ve haven’t worn it since last spring. I’ll reach for it in a few weeks when my lilac bushes start blooming.

        • Here too, we had a cold and snowy winter. However, Lilac Love is a wonderful fragrance to welcome spring wearing! I’ve also been wearing Noa (as Brigitte), No 5 Eau Premiere, 1957, and Oscar Esprit. These lighter fragrances are so delightful and the arrival of spring is so welcome!

  13. I started the day wearing Gres cabotine rose for the NST community project (a long ago TJ Maxx blind buy). It’s body spray territory – gone in an hour- so I replaced it with Tauer Une Rose Vermeille from a sample. We are going to the symphony tonight so I need to choose something else for that because my dry skin is chomping up the Tauer as well. At the moment I’m sitting in the coffee shop down the street from my preschool, trying to summon the energy to walk to my car. It’s been that kind of week….

  14. I arrived from the business trip in the afternoon and soon I had to go to the theater with my mum. I bought the tickets three months ago and couldn’t know that I’d be so very tired when the time comes 😦 But my mum enjoyed it thoroughly and I’ve enjoyed my perfume – Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours.

  16. Yesterday was Richard James Savile Row, a discontinued gem. I went to the football, my team played like shit, we lost to a crap side, and I then had to drive 2.5 hours to get home. I hit the hay at 2am Saturday and woke up feeling like i’d been hit with a hammer. Could not even get up the energy to spray some perfume, so nothing today.

  17. I am about ready to walk into Optus and throw our modem at the first unfortunate soul I meet who works there. Our home wi-fi, actually broadband, is effing attrocious. It crashes in the middle of comments, mostly Facebook, and I find my likes are rarely saved. That is the biggest reason I don’t seem to be anywhere in cyber world. We have had four months of it and all four of us in my household are quickly rediscovering non technology based hobbies.

Anyway, SOTDs lately have been mostly samples. Some are pretty darn good, others have helped me wipe them off my wish list.

This coming week will be a return to my standard collection, me thinks.

I found out that the elderly lady in the room next to mine doesn’t care for perfume, saying there’s fragrance in all body products anyway. I told her perfume can really change my mood, but this seemed like a totally alien thought to her. How sad, she could really do with some input to brighten her days. But then again she is not into food either, preferring jazz music to relax.
