Perfume Purchase, Perfume Game.

Hi Guys

This is gonna be a bit of a babbling post.  I just got home from work, I wanna go to the gym, APJ deadline is looming, as ever, and Portia kind of stole my post theme on his Saturday Question.  Which I have chosen to kind of answer here. Please take a look at her post first!

Perfume Purchase, Perfume Game.

I only really pay attention to what the perfume blogs  have to say about I purchase I have decided to make after I have either bought the perfume or made the decisions to.   Then I go ballistic looking at every single thing that I can I find.  There is a reason for that, I don’t allow someone’s opinion to influence me in making a purchase decisions. That of course down not apply to my general perfume blog reading, I enjoy so many.  Way back in the past I can remember reading stuff that was like “wow, oh my gosh, I have to have that right now it must be amazing.”  Except it wasn’t.  A couple of sample orders taught me that at least 15 years ago.

I am going to Vienna on Thursday with B.londeswunder to buy Chanel 1957.  I have been waiting since February for the twenty per cent off day.  It is finally here.  Of course I imagine the moment of opening it, and finally spraying it out of the proper bottle.  I dunno about justifying it, but I guess I do yeah.  It is like a junkie waiting for a hit.  The thrill of the score and finally having the stuff in your hand..  I am fully aware of how short-lived the euphoria is, and that definitely keeps me on a sane level, only buying what I absolutely feel I cannot live without.  So you see dear readers, I was gonna ask you how you approach buying new bottles of perfume, and if you had any strange behaviors attached to it.  I could not believe it when I saw the Saturday Question!

Unlike Portia I have never hunted for bargains, vintage, and do not kid myself that THIS will be the one and I will wear it until I am in a coma.  Nope.  Would I buy more if I could afford anything I wanted?  Possibly, but not much.  I mean having money does not turn shit into gold.  But I would buy my Hermès and Chanel perfumes in the huge bottles, no question.  And in the small bottles, and in the travel size.  Yep.

A Perfume Game

It is not rocket science that in one way or another we are all batshit crazy in our addiction to fragrance.  I mean there is not a day where I do not think about perfume, or what I am going to wear for the Cookie Run, or which scent fits with the gym today, or what am I going to wear during the Esxence 2019 in Milan, which is coming up very soon.

So I have a kind of game for you.  Utterly pointless, but ……. It was about eighteen years ago this month when I purchased my first proper niche fragrance.  I know the time so well because it was when we had just opened our shop.  I ordered it after having tried some samples.  I did not order it blind, of course not.  It was a big bottle, and I loved it to pieces, used every last drop, and even though I recently said that I seldom receive compliments on my scent, this one garnered really a lot.  It remains to this day the only bottle of perfume I have drained.  I never reordered it because I had got more of a collection together by the time it was finished.   Last week, on the spur of the moment I ordered it again.  Bit of a gamble as I may not love it like I did, but – hey, sometimes I do take calculated risks.  Anyone wanna take a guess on what it was?   I am willing to bet that there is no hope in hell of anyone guessing, but if someone does, I will come up with some sort of prize.  Perhaps a decant.  Because there is nothing I love more than decanting perfume and going to the post office.  Calculated risk that I won’t have to.

(I have told Crikey what perfume it was, gotta keep things totally honest huh?)

LLAP Bussis.

  1. Okay, it has to be a patchouli perfume right? I think I know which one but I will message you rather than put it here in case I’m correct.
So excited for you to get your bottle of 1957 at last! You know it’s love when you don’t change your mind by the time you’re able to buy it 🙂

    • Hi Tara! No I have not changed my mind. But what I have done is stopped wearing the mini, I used about half of it. Then I can groove on the excitement of wearing it again with a massive overspray. You are of course pretty close with your guess, indeed I do believe I have told you before, and knowing you, you have not forgotten! 🙂

  2. Not a clue, but I enjoyed reading the post! Enjoy your hit of 1957 when you get it. The standout discovery so far for me this year. And even though it is only just April, I doubt anything else will top it in the months to come.

    • Yeah V I was pretty sure you would love it. It has your name all over it. I cannot imagine anything better, or at least to my taste, being launched this year. Nope. And rumour has it, that they will discontinue the 1957 as soon as it is all gone. Dunno if that is true or not. xxxx

  3. Val, I have no idea what your first significant purchase was, but interested to find out. I bought some 1957 in Portia’s split, and have only given it a quick spritz – perhaps I will sleep in it tonight? I did love the top notes, I remember telling the empty room that I smelled fabulous! Interesting to see that this one is growing on Portia, too.

    • Of course not Sue, who would know unless they were told. 😉 Rumpelstiltskin ……. I will tell you tomorrow, my tomorrow. Not that exciting I promise! Give it a good spraying, let me know. I am so excited to get it. xxxx

    • Hi Neva! Nope, but Tubereuse Criminelle was my third or fourth bottle of “niche” – so pretty close. Thank you, I absolutely will enjoy it. I will buy t the moment I hit Vienna so that I can then chill for the rest of the day there. No good if I do it last thing …… xxx

  4. Hey Val, fun read. So glad to hear that you still have the perfume bug. I have no clue what it was but am hazarding a guess that it was Serge Lutens La Myrrhe.

    • Holy Cow – you are damn close Hamamelis. That was my second bottle, hot on the heels of my first. I had forgotten that, I also used it all up. Oh gosh, I wonder if it is still as lovely now? Will have to try it. Might have been my favourite patchouli ever. I am sure it will have been reformulated. It came out around the same time as ………… Gosh I might have to send you something anyway!!! Hugs. xxxxx

  5. Ha, me too, not a day when I don’t think about what perfume I am going to wear. I admit to batshit crazy! I don’t know you well enough to guess your first niche scent, but I think you are a classicist at heart…Chanel?

    • Hi Jackie b 🙂 I am very sure that we are all like that, hallucinating the moment we spray it onto our skin. My favourite part, and it lasts nano seconds. Kind of sad. Oh I have always had a Chanel on the go, but no – I mean niche niche. Although I do not care to use that word any more!! xxxx

    • Hey cassieflower! (See above.) Chanel wise I bought RC31 in 2013 I think, my first Exclusif, followed by Coromandel the year after, I bought that with Portia – in the same store that I am going to on Thursday. 😉 xxxx

  6. Congrats on the 1957! I tend to get a fixation on something and then rabidly pursue it until I get it, then put it in the closet and forget about it. I’m a compulsive hunter.

    • Interesting Tara C. I get the fixation after having decided to buy it. True, it does get chucked into the closet, but I don’t forget about it. And I don’t spend time hunting what I cannot get. Although I must say I am very close to doing so for the first time ever, I desperately want a bottle of an older version of Le Parfum de Therese. In case anyone knows anything …… 😉

  7. I remember reading something about your first niche love. It could be a Lutens, perhaps Iris Silver Mist?

As for your perfume purchase process, I gotta say, you’re a chill perfumista, Val. Get that Chanel fix, though 😉 It’s true that we’re all addicted to fragrance and to constantly trying new stuff, the good thing is we manage to be reasonable about it. Hugs!

  8. Actualy no. I just got ISM a month ago. And have worn it every night since. I cannot express how deep my love is for it right now. I shower every night, just to be able to put it on. I may appear chill from the outside, yes. Hahahahahaha. We all feed our addiction in idiosyncratic behaviours of one kind or another. Nope. Not ISM. 🙂

  9. My guess is a Serge Lutens as well. Datura Noir?
Wheee! Enjoy your bottle of Chanel 1957!
Are you getting the big bottle? I regrettably bought the smaller bottle, not enough.
Like you, I think of perfume daily, and if I had endless money I’d also have all the huge bottles of Chanel!
    Fun post! Xx

    • Nope. Not a Serge. Oh noooooooo Kathleen. I am/was gonna get the small bottle. Now I have a day and a half to talk myself into the big one. I don’t need it. Nope. But could reward myself for being so controlled in my addiction huh? Which of course is part of being an addict. Scream. I will let you know. Damn. xxxx

      • Well, the big bottle makes more sense with the price point per ml and the 20% discount? Then you’ll be able to spray lavishly without worry of running out.
        Is Chanel truly discontinuing 1957?

        • I do not need a big bottle and could get the Deauville with the extra cash. Or feed my cat. Or buy a couple of T-Shirts. I will see how it rolls tomorrow. I have NO idea if they will discontinue it, just have seen it around; I doubt it myself but you never know.

          • Whichever size 1957 bottle you purchase, you will have a beautiful perfume. Enjoy your shopping experience and sniffing! I’m planning a trip to Dallas later in Easter. There is a Chanel boutique there (not one where I live) and I’m looking forward to stopping in for a sniff visit.

  10. Hi Val. Enjoy your day with your daughter. I can only imagine the conversation between you both. To be a fly on the wall…!

1957 IS beautifully made and a lovely scent. I am discovering I am not a musk fan. I have Clair de Musc by Lutens, and it is all the musk I really need for the rest of my life. As it is 100ml, I am contemplating trading it. A 10ml decant would be enough.

My guess is 1740 De Sade by Histoire de Parfum?

    • You didn’t know I had a shop? Oh wow, sorry. I babble on like everyone knows. Cookie Queen is not just a random title. 😎Maybe I will do another post with some pictures and how my week rolls. I did it once but it was way before the APJ Manic Meltdown of 2018. Give me til lunchtime. Then I’ll reveal the frag. Hahahahaha. Hugs.

      • ah, thank you so much. Will wait for your perfume. I am sorry I must have missed your post. I have seen pictures of your cookies and I thought your name is inspired by the fact that you are extremely passionate about it (which you are) and you keep making them (which you do). So I did get most parts right minus the shop part 😀

  11. You are really making me want to try 1957. My guess, based on all the clues above: Histoire de Parfum Noir Patchouli (or L’Artisan Voleur de Roses – which was one of my first ‘oh- I like roses if they are dirtied with patchouli’ moments..:)).

    • People are in the right area – but nope. Not yet. 1957 is worth trying – although you may think it totally out of your zone. But I just the love the elegance and purity of it – it balances my scruffy wardrobe. It is exquisitely made. 💋

  12. Ok guys. Thanks a lot for all your fun and extremely close comments. You all know me better than I thought. Hahahahahaha.

    So my first purchase was:

    Histoire de Parfums 1969.

And I’m so looking forward to trying it again.

I used to layer it with Il Profumo Patchouli Noir – Osmo Absolu. Thick oil.

    Going back to my roots.

    • Last night I spent about half an hour trying to guess your perfume but I didn’t have time to post my guess, which is fine since I guessed wrong. But it was fun 🙂
I tried 1969 a while ago, liked it but didn’t go for a bottle. And recently I bought a decant from the ScentBird: I think it’ll last me for a while.
Did you buy a large bottle of 1957? 😉

  13. Never would have guessed! I’ve not sniffed Histoire de Parfums 1969, but I have it in my Scentbird queue to sample because it sounds so interesting. Looking forward to experiencing it!

    • Also, what is the name of the store in Vienna that has 20% sale on Chanel Exclusives? I just got a text from a friend traveling in Europe and she will be in Vienna tomorrow. She went to Chanel in London and sampled 1957 and is in love.

      • It is the parfumerie DOUGLAS. On the Kärtnerstrasse. Near Stefansplatz. There are two Douglas stores in the street – it is the one on the corner. Quite clear. It is the only place that has the Exclusifs outside of the Chanel Boutique. There are loads of places with 20% off tomorrow, it is Woman Day. Sponsored by the magazine : Woman.

Huge shopping day in Austria. ❤️❤️❤️
