Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

OK I’m adding a THUNKED section here too. It’s becoming an APJ obsession and I love the idea of us using our fragrances and hoiking the vial, decant or bottle. Thunk is the sound of an empty hitting the bin so you must empty it for the thunk to count.

Anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. As always YMMV.

I’d love it if you get involved: agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

New Sniffs:

ELdO True Lust – Rayon Violet de ses Yeux

This is a Press Bottle from my mate Bronwyn who imports ELdO to Australia. The opening is like a chemical spill but after about 20 seconds this beautiful spicy rose and parma violet fragrance comes pouring out. So pretty. ELdO has a way of making quite old fashioned fragrance tropes seem utterly new. I like it. The dry down has darker and more feral, woods and animal musk. (Review & Giveaway coming)

Eau My Soul by 4160 Tuesdays

Everyone is going crazy for this over the last year. I can see why. So wearable and pretty. Honeyed tobacco and boozy amber, yum.

Thunked:

Music For A While by Frederic Malle

Thunked my 3ml decant. Pineapple, Lavender and stuff. What a stupid name for a perfume. Smells so good though.

Radox Bath Salts

Don’t worry. I have a back up.

Estee Lauder Youth Dew Deodorant

The perfect underlay for any spicy, amber or woodsy fragrance. Youth Dew gives everything a little lift. I can’t even remember where this came from but I loved it.

Have you tried any of these? How did they work for you?

  1. Oh this post made me smile Portia. I don’t know what was better: Music for a While having a stupid name or “The opening is like a chemical spill”. You’re such a talent.

I tried Violet Ida by Miller Harris this week and loved it. Great retro iris.

  2. I have a bottle of ELDO True Lust and love it! Music for Awhile was weird all around for me including the name. And I love Youth Dew in all forms, wore it this week on a cold day per your reminder.
I need to get my nose on Eau My Soul! I enjoy hearing about new fragrances from this post.
My new sniff was also an ELDO, Vraie Blond. I love the top notes of aldehydes, champagne and peach as described, but the drydown was not as pretty on me. My reaquainted newish sniff is Vivienne Westwood Boudoir. I had a bottle many years ago and was recently reminded of it. I found a bottle on Amazon and love it as much as I did before.

  3. Yay saffy!!!!
Haven’t tried any of those and thunked nothing. It’s been a quiet week perfume wise but I don’t mind.

  4. New sniff: Fleurs d´oranger by SL, thankfully i only sampled one tiny spray before boarding my flight from Osaka to Munich….
Thunked a tiny sample of Scent Studio 111, but nothing else

  5. Only one new sniff this week, but it’s an exciting one. Liz Moores very kindly included a sample of her as-yet-unreleased new perfume with the bottle of Anubis that I bought. Just first impressions, because I want to give it another proper wearing and think about it properly, but it’s bloody *gorgeous* and I think it’s going to be a huge success. It’s rich with rose and orris and myrrh, smooooothed out and languorous with benzoin, tonka, and sandalwood though there’s something bright and sparkling in there too. It’s one of those scents that keeps catching you with that “what’s that amazing smell? oh! it’s ME!”

Music for a while? I just could NOT with that. I tried the sample a few times, because it annoyed me enough to want to beat it. But nope.

      • Thunked a sample of rose wood by Ajmal, e very nice spicy rose with oriental vibes, and also a small bottle 30ml of hermes cologne d’orange verte (i use this one like a lot as it’s so refreshing and it sits on you for max 2 hours). I’m really curious about that Eau my soul from 4160 tuesdays, everybody’s talking nice about it.

    • oh, and there was a tragic accidental thunk: a vintage mini of Jolie Madame edt arrived empty. Seller posted it to me without sealing the bottle and the lid came off in transit. The very fragrant soaked envelope and bubblewrap are making my clothes drawers smell fabulous, but, sadness! What a waste. Kudos to the buyer though, who refunded me on the same day without a whimper.

      • Oh no! I had that happen once with s vintage mini Chanel No 5. The seller also felt terrible, and I made the best of it like you. I kept the remnants in my wallet which then smelled fabulous!

      • How disappointing but you’re making good use of what you have left! I also have received a spilled bottle in the mail, a vintage mini Chanel No5. I used the remnants in my wallet and enjoyed the beautiful scent that way. The seller didn’t refund my money and instead sent me a bevy of minis from the 80s, which was such a wonderful gift. In the process, I’ve discovered so many perfumes that were popular at that time and still gorgeous now. All’s well that ends well!

  6. I haven’t thunked anything this week, but I’m making great use of the L’Occitane Grapefruit Rhubarb edt, both as a room spray and as my everyday scent. Hope to finish the bottle during the summer.

I find “Music for a while” a poetic name, but it says nothing about the perfume.

Still stuck, with a giant Aircast boot/orthosis, so no sniffing of new scents at various departement stores. There will be plenty of money for a shopping spree in June, I’m sure.

    • Are you managing to get a bit more mobile now with your giant moon boot, even just around and about at rehab?

      • Not allowed to step on the foot for another 3 weeks or so, I’m afraid 😦, but ventured outside with the OT lady yesterday, needed to test the limits of the manual wheelchair (and my own strength). Still not much other than crocus in the flowerbeds!

      • Sadly I’m not allowed to walk on my right foot for another 3 weeks ☹️
Yesterday I ventured outside with the OT person, just to test the limits of the manual wheelchair (and my strength). So far only crocus (croci?) outside, but being confined to a limited indoors space gets harder and harder. Spring is so special in our harsh climate.

    • You certainly deserve a shopping spree Ingeborg, when you’re healed enough to be mobile! At least you’ve had some beautiful fragrances to keep you company on your long recovery. Wishing you continued successful healing!

  7. I’ve fallen behind on the newer ELDOs, must catch up on that house soon. Eau My Soul is really quite good, I’ve been on the fence about a bottle for a while, should search a deal while it is fresh in my mind. No new sniffs for me this week, but I have a baggie of older samples that I really should sit down and explore this weekend.

  8. Haven’t tried any of your newbies, P, and of course anyone of a ‘certain age’ will be familiar with Youth Dew. To me it was the smell of my Mam’s bedroom, plus the smell of my dance teacher, Had a couple of new sniffs this past week, First was Teint de Neige, fabulously powdery rose with a little citrus. The seller included a sample of Amouage Lilac Love with it. Oh dear, it’s eye-rollingly gorgeous. I haven’t one single lilac perfume in the collection. I may need to address this problem.
    Congratulations Saffy, PPP for you.

  9. Congratulations, Saffy!

I’m still trying all the perfumes I got last week. Half of them is still in “bottle shock”, but the rest feels okay. This was a rose-centric week: I’ve tried Rose Turkia, Porpora, Rose Privee and vintage Parfum d’Hermes (less rosy ancestor of Rouge d’Hermes). Each is beautiful in their own way, the big question is which one is going to be the next FB purchase (my bet is on the Hermes but anything can happen).

    Thunked nothing.

      • Hi Portia! Bottle shock” is a term used in winemaking: wine’s flavours can change temporarily right after bottling or if shaken in travel. The same thing happens to perfumes, some of them seem unbalanced after a long journey, especially vintage ones.

Yes, Parfum d’Hermes is just plain gorgeous 🙂

  10. I still haven’t found a Frederic Malle that works for me, that one sounds ok though. Xerjoff Nio is my new sniff, absolutely amazing stuff, wish it was cheaper!

    • Hi there j.d.
Some people have houses they just don’t click with. It’s not uncommon. Thank goodness there’s so much other choice in the 21st century that we can write off a few houses and still have far too many to choose from.
I liked Nio too if I remember rightly.

  11. I am thunking shower gels and samples like a boss! I am feeling weirdly sad that my vanity shelves are bare, but I so desperately need a week faaaaar away.

I live with Youth Dew deo. I have always had a roll on for the last however many years. A must.

I am simply DYING to try more ELdOs. I enjoy their quirky ways and offbeat sublime beauty.

    And YAAAAAY TO SAFFYISHERE!

  12. I haven’t tried any of your new sniffs but last weekend in Budapest I’ve tried Sublime Balkiss from The Different Company (you wrote about it recently in New Sniffs, I think). I was blown away instantly! I think it will be my birthday present for myself.
Last week’s thunks: samples of Diptyque’s 34 blvd st. Germain and Memo’s Lalibella. Nothing I’d care for.
    Saffy, congrats on your win!

  13. I disliked Music for a While intensely, swapped away the travel spray I had blind bought immediately. Haven’t tried the YD deodorant but I’m a fan of Shalimar and DK Cashmere Mist deos. I thunked decants of NG Or du Sérail, Montale Vanille Exquise and TF Jasmine Musk this week. Yay! Working hard on the last of my Arquiste Anima Dulcis and Kilian Intoxicated too.

  14. Boring week. Nothing new, nothing thunked. I revisited RL Polo Green with a view to thunking it and decided I like it too much. I’ll probably thunk a few next week, including some selling.

  15. I have been sorting my stash at last, and tried Le Labo’s Patchouli 24. I received it as a very generous giveaway from an Aussie Fragrance Network member. I put it on before I went to bed. I didn’t think I liked patchouli, but this is something else. Warmth, campfire, timber, smoke, leather, depth … all good things. And the other half, who very, very rarely notices or compliments my fragrances, paid me the ultimate compliment of ‘you smell nice’. High praise from him. And that was the next day, after a shower. Lovely, lovely stuff.
