Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Saturday Question: What Brand Do You Have Most Fragrances From?

I know this Saturday Question can be looked at from a few different perspectives. No problem. Choose how you perceive the question and answer accordingly. You can talk most bottles including all your backups, most different fragrance names or you can include your samples & decants. There are other ways too. Please make sure you give us your answer motive as we as your answer.

My Answer:

I can answer both breadth of collection and number of bottles and decants with the same house. It far outstrips its nearest rival by dozens of bottles.

Guerlain

I have 5 boxes of most of the older collection and a complete drawer set aside for Shalimar. There are also around 20 of the modern gold/deep purple exclusives boxes that take up a whole shelf in the perfume room. Everything from a huge bee bottle of Cologne de Perfumer, through my vintage Shalimar, Mahora, Mitsouko and Vol de Nuits and on to the modern department store offerings Mon Guerlain, Dress Code and L’Homme Ideal. There are the set of Les Deserts d’Orient and Les Absolus d’Orient, Aqua allegories, EdC, Edt, EdP and extrait. There are always at least 3 in my current favourites tray and I reach for the brands products more than weekly.

There’s something about Guerlain. It’s historical memories of my Mum and her friends in Shalimar and my first Squirt Bitch job in a department store Guerlain was one of my brands. It’s own history and even now under the vast demystifying umbrella of LVMH they still often make fragrances head and shoulders above the rest.  Not all of them are winners for me, in fact I’m finding more and more Guerlain is in complete disregard of its own legacy, yet I still can find things to love in their current selection and hopefully will always.

What Brand Do You Have Most Fragrances From and Why?

  2. My answer is more a fantasy one. If I could I would have the entire collection of Sonoma Scent Studio. And I am now experiencing deja Vu because I just left this comment on Undinas blog. But I would also want all St Clair Scents and 1000 Flowers because I adore the works of these talented perfumers. I would love every Berdoues Grand Cru collection bottles for the bottles. And I already have every Escada LE from 1994.

  4. I have more Guerlains than any other house. I am not sure why, but maybe it’s the history, the early scents which combined naturals with synthetics. The backstory, like Vol de Nuit. The bottles, love them too.
    And going to the Champs Elysees store just made my head spin.
    Not sure about most recent releases tho. Eh.

  5. I think it’s Dior for me. A long love affair with Tendre Poison has me stockpiling when I can afford to, and that quest has probably led me to seeking out others. I’d like to get my hands on Midnight Poison at some stage.

  8. Love these weekend talks, Portia 😊😉 I have a lot of Guerlain fragrances not as much as you though. My mother used to wear Guerlain make up and I loved to visit their counter during uni. Agree, hopefully Guerlain continue to sell fragrances which are interesting enough. 😘😘 Esperanza Have a fab weekend!

  9. I envy your Guerlain collection Portia! My answer is Chanel. I became obsessed with the brand from an early age, love the history, and really love most all of the fragrances. I have the majority of the Exclusives (still working on getting a couple more in the future), and a collection of various No 5s, including vintages of No 5 and Coco. I even have a little sample of No 46. The only Chanel fragrance that does not suit me is Coco Mademoiselle. I gave away my bottle, and then purchased the Intense version which still doesn’t work for me.

  10. I love Guerlain. But my vote will go for Uncle Serge Lutens. I don’t know when I unconsciously fallen love with the brand. The 1st one I sniffed from the brand was Amber Sultan. And immediately it captured me. Then FEA, Chergui and many more. Gradually it was engulfing me. Then I started collecting them. Reading about uncle Serge made me more interested about the brand. And I have realized that it is my favorite brand. I think I have about 21 bottles including bell jars and old formulations. Also few decants. I am always looking to get some vintage bottles from the brand. My most favorite from the house can be Borneo and Santal de Mysore.

  11. I feel very fortunate to have the answer be Amouage because I was able to get so many of the, now discontinued, attars (oils) by hosting a huge split of them. When I started the split I never guessed they would be discontinued since they were even more popular than the EdP in the UAE. Now the problem is I tend to hoard them instead of enjoying them since I know how hard it is to get them (some are still available in Oman). Fortunately, I love so many of the EdP and always look forward to Mr Chong’s newest releases so, I think Amouage will remain at the top for the years to come.

  12. Dior. I have half a dozen of the more recent Privee collection–hurrah for the 40ml bottles–and some Encens Mythique, but otherwise it’s all vintage, with another half dozen or so just of Miss Diors of various sizes and concentrations, and then bits and pieces across the history. Chanel is the runner up–again the numbers are nudged upwards by a few vintage treasures–with Lutens a close third at ten.

  13. I must say Dior takes the nr 1 medal in my collection. I have several designers and vintage old batches, plus some of the collection prive. Also another house i love and i own most of their offerings, is Costume National 👌🏻 Love them bottles a lot ❤️

      That you love Costume National makes me really happy. I love the bottles and their fragrances too. Currently I only have So Nude and 21 in my collection but my eyes are peeled for some more if the timing and price are right.

      • Costume National Soul and Scent Intense are amazing, definitely give them a try👍🏻👍🏻 And on the Scent intense fragrance you can have the limited edition bottles, black with gold or red, they look gorgeous ❤️❤️

  15. Probably BPAL if you count imps. For normal bottles I would guess Guerlain. I do have a lot of different Habits Rouges and G. vintages. Dior is probably close behind.

  16. I have a small collection compared to most perfume people. If I count last year’s miniature bottles, the answer would be Hermès, since I also own Voyages and Ambre des Merveilles. But then there’s Guerlain now represented with AA Pamplelune, AA Mandarine Basilic and Chamade edp. And most tested would be SL. But it also comes down to what is available, Dior privee line is not available here, with the 40 ml bottles it is my favourite lineup now and I would have treated myself to more of those if I had easier access to those bottles (and samples).

  17. Pre-LVMH era Guerlain for me, as well. No one comes close although Caron is technically a runner-up with five or six bottles. Guerlain is a rare perfume dynasty that had three gifted perfumers who created dozens (!) of beautiful scents. I remember this vintage ad where it reads: “One great perfume is a rare thing, two great perfumes is even rarer, three is exceptional, eight is Guerlain” which sounds like a bold statement but it’s absolutely true, at least for me.

  18. If we’re talking about FBs then it would be ELO, but if decants count then it would be Fancy Dior, which cost me about the same as the former!

  20. I went into my spreadsheet to be scientific. And only counted manufacturer sprays of at least 10ml. Nicolai was the winner with 11, followed by Lolita Lempicka and Goutal tied at 8. I have 12 Sonoma Scent Studio perfumes but many are only 5 ml travel sprays, so if I created different criteria SSS would be the winner!

  21. For sheer number of variety, TRNP. Hands down. Each scent has its own very distinct personality.

    As for 50ml and over, Guerlain, followed by Chanel. I am less impressed with Chanel these days. If they ever stop Cristalle and/or 19, they have lost me as a customer for life.

    In my late teens, it was Dior and Lauder. I bought anything and everything from them. Followed by Lancome. Then Lancome lost me as 1999 approached. Well, all the big houses became scarily aromatic and aquatic and sheer focused.

    But two I am very keen to own more of are Lutens and ELdO.

  22. I’m thinking it’s Narciso Rodriguez out in front with Dior a close second. I think. Then Guerlain and Annick Goutal. I’m too tired to overthink anything today after about two hours sleep last night.

  23. Tom Ford. Most of his recent releases have been underwhelming, but he released so many of my all time favourites during the early years.

  25. Chanel takes it for me with 8 bottles not including backups. No 19, No 5, Bois des Iles, Allure, Coromandel, Misia, 31 Rue Cambon, and Cristalle. What can I say, they make perfumes that smell great to me!
    Hiram Green might have become my favorite over time, I have all but Hyde and if there were more in the collection, they would probably take 1st place.

  26. It seems to be a tie between Chanel and Fragonard. Chanel, vecause, well, Chanel. Fragonard has lovely, reasonably priced scents that I truly enjoy.

  27. I think it is Christian Dior in my case. Overall, I feel Christian Dior has the most storied perfume history, even greater than Chanel, Guerlain etc. Lot of classics in both masculine and feminine releases.

  28. I have a huge perfume oil collection! Nocturne Alchemy is the House I have the most bottles from, followed by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.
    As for multiple bottles of a perfume (and many flankers), Shalimar is the winner in that category. I will always think of you, Portia, when I wear this magnificent queen!

  29. For simplicity’s sake, I’m only going to count bottles here. Over the years I’ve acquired loads of samples and decants from various houses and counting them might misrepresent my own tastes.

    There’s lots of houses that I have three or four from, but my outright winners would be:

    Chanel (Allure Homme, Allure Homme Sport, Pour Monsieur, Gentleman’s Cologne, Pour Monsieur Vintage, Pour Monsieur After Shave, Number 19, Anraeus, Egoiste)

    and

    Guerlain (L’Instant, L’Instant Extreme, Homme, Jicky x 2, Mitsouko, L’Heure Bleue, Habit Rouge, Vetiver, Ode)

    Clearly these numbers have been bolstered by my vintage collecting, but I don’t often buy vintage that I wouldn’t wear, so I guess they count.

  30. My two biggest housea are BPAL, which makes sense as that was the gateway to other perfumes and Sucreabeille which is a really nice little indie house that’s both playful and creative.

  33. Late to comment because holiday! A week on Tenerife, one of the Spanish Canary islands. Gorgeous hotel, food, view and best of all wonderful company (my husband).
    Most bottles: Annick Goutal, Chanel, Vero, Hiram Green, April Aromatics.

  34. I was stumped for an answer, as I have a handful of of bottles of several houses’ scents, but then I realized I have the Atelier Cologne Advent calendar, and that has 24 sample sizes! So that’s the most I have from one house. And I have it because … Advent! I love Advent calendars.

  35. I’m pretty sure that for full bottles it’s a close race between Chanel, Ineke, and Parfum d’Empire. Too lazy for an actual count. I try really hard to keep my bottle purchases to a minimum due to my fickle nature. I have to have finished a small decant before I’m allowed to buy a bottle (with a few bargain and LE exceptions).

    • OOO Ineke!!! yes, love those too! Both the fragrances and the bottles! How many do you have? We have two in my house but I would not mind a dresser of all of them…how exquisite would that look?

  37. I have only one scent from each house, but three small bottles of No.19 vintage parfum and a sample of EdeT. I have Vero Mito VdeE and my new Mito extrait. Otherwise, one Puredistance, one Dior, one FM, one SL, one AG. I go for the smorgasbord approach! Although I never thought of it that way.

      • Thanks! I have had so many samples over the years, but every FB I have is a deep love. Doesn’t matter whether I reach for Antonia or vintage Diorissimo or Néroli – I will be checking my wrist at intervals and smiling inside, because whatever I wear that day, it moves me and gives me joy!

  38. My top are Chanel – there are so many good ones to choose from – Parfum d’Empire, somewhat to my surprise, and Neela Vermeire. I own almost all of hers. If I start that way, smaller houses like Slumberhouse and Hiram Green and Papillon have a very good showing too. And Naomi Goodsir.

    Oh and plenty of Serge too, but only two or three that I actively wear.

  40. L’Artisan for me. One lonely bottle of Mure et Musc bought while on holidays in Italy years ago and now I’ve got a neat little bunch of delightful and amazing scents, like Al Oudh and Dzing! And Timbuktu and Voluer Roses.. and Vanille Absolument… and, and 😆

  42. Guerlain is the leader of the pack for me too. I adore so many. Guerlain scents work well with my skin chemistry. And they are easy to find and not too expensive, perfect for me.

  43. Hands down – Jo Malone for me, no matter how I count, full bottles only or include decants and samples. The reasons are simple: it was my first … not mainstream brand, and they have those reasonably-sized bottles. I still like it and wear a lot of their scents though I’m tired of endless limited editions.
