Saturday Question: What Was Your Last Full Bottle Purchase?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Saturday Question: What Was Your Last Full Bottle Purchase?

OK, I am a fairly consistent buyer of fragrance. Because I’ve been leading up to our honeymoon though there has been a bit of a hold on shopping. There have been a few things off Sales Docs on the FaceBook pages and a couple of super bargains but only one big ticket item this year. I even made it a split to defray some of the costs and assuage my guilt.

My Answer:

My last FB purchase was CHANEL 1957 200ml. When I first tried it on my body I was massively underwhelmed. You know, I really like to be bowled over by lavish and fabulous fireworks at the start. 1957 isn’t like that. You need to give it time to develop, also repeated wearings bring out more and more nuance. After a few wears I wanted MORE! So I could lavishly spritz to my hearts content.

There’s something so satisfying about the feeling of the 200ml bottle in my hand, even though I sold off about 1/3 it still looks like I have enough and I love to give myself those extra couple of bursts. Very happy shopping outcome.

My Saturday Question to you is:

What Was Your Last Full Bottle Purchase?

  1. I’m so glad you are enjoying 1957 Portia! 1957 is my last expensive perfume purchase. I don’t purchase this price point often. 1ehI also am a consistent fragrance buyer and have also purchased some bottles from FragranceNet including Guerlain L’Instant, Estee Lauder White Linen and Azuree, Oscar Esprit, Boudoir, Fath de Fath.
My official “last bottle” purchase was vintage Shalimar Cologne from Ebay.

  2. My last full bottle purchases 2 days ago were: Guerlain Habit Rouge and Lavin Arpege. I have been in a “no buy” since last year, but that is quite difficult to do for a long period of time. I will be definitely more cautious about perfume shopping and it helps that new releases these days don’t appeal me as the old ones.

      • Thank you! I run out of my bottle long time ago and I had been missing it a lot lately. I agree with you that Arpege is a beautiful winter scent.

    • How does the current Arpege smell? I used to wear it in the 70’s. I have a small bottle of vintage now, but, tbh, it didn’t age all that well. Especially not the top notes.
And a big hello to you perfumelover67!!! You’re finally with us……instead of spying, I mean, lurking. A friend of Mrs. Marzipan’s is a friend of mine!!

      • Thank you Marcellavmiller! 😊
I have not tried vintage Arpege, but based on reviews, the currrent formulation is a very pale version of the original one. It is all white flowers with the jasmine and ylang ylang very prominent. The sandalwood and vetiver in the drydown is quite nice. I understand that the sandalwood is not as creamy as it was before and overall is harsher than the vintage. I find it quite lovely and very comforting.

        • It is good to know that the vintage and current formulation are very similar. I hope to try the vintage at some point. It is a beautiful perfume and as you said sillage and longevity are great!

          • There are any very reasonably priced small vintage extraits bottles of Arpege on eBay. I bought a small bottle in box with paper on it a few years ago, and it was in surprisingly good condition. I also find the current bottles smell beautiful. I love when a comfort perfume envelopes me.

  3. My last full bottle could well be my last full bottle EVER (who am I trying to kid?) A small but mighty bottle of Casablanca. What swung it for me was the availability of this size- 13 ml. Utter perfection in every way. If I wish and wish and mentally plead to the gods then maybe Francesca Bianchi will release travel spray sizes of the four that I want? They come in 30 ml but at this stage of my life and having so many bottles already it’s hard to justify. But I will buy decants, no question about it 😎

  4. I’m technically on a no-buy, but I sold some perfume and used the proceeds to buy a used bottle of Hiram Green Dilettante from a perfumista friend.

  5. A 100ml ish bottle of vintage Vent Vert EDT, still sealed, from before 1971 (it had a pre-decimal price sticker, £2 and 1 shilling duty free.)

    • Whoops, this ended up in the wrong spot, I’m like Hamamelis & blind bought Lustre. I don’t buy often anymore but can’t seem to resist HG.

  6. Hmmm…… let’s see…..well I acquired four purchases for my birthday but I am not counting those as they were technically gifts from the Marzipan clan ( Brigitte, Reglisse Noire before the price hike, NOA for twenty bucks and Niki de Saint Phalle for twenty one bucks). So I guess my last full bottle was Heaven which Undina, Cassie , Marcella and Perfumelover67 forced me to buy last spring? Or was it the Fall? Lordy, I don’t even remember!!!

And speaking of 1957, Caitlin of This Side of Perfume just created my massive lemming for this one…..at least to try it. Her recent post is very convincing.

  7. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for American Perfumer Colorado. The sample was on my skin for all of 15 minutes before I ordered a bottle. I’m doing a decent job staying in my budget this year so I won’t have the $ for another bottle until September.

    • Wow 15 minutes only? You must have really fallen in love with other Colorado. I don’t know that I have ever quite made such a hasty decision. Perhaps an hour is my quickest.

    • I haven’t sniffed Colorado (and I live here), but I love DSH fragrances.
I love when a fragrance connection happens immediately and it is love at first sniff, bliss!

  9. Bought a back up bottle of Bas de Soie and some 5 O’clock au Gingembre in a “last of the old packaging” discounter buy. Commencing the pretense that my No Buy this year was in fact a Low Buy all along.

  10. My last full bottle was Dior Fève Délicieuse, 125 ml because the Vienna boutique did not have the 40 ml bottle apparently. I would not usually buy anything in such a big bottle, but have been wanting this for a while, and it is not on sale here.

      • Yeah, I felt like treating myself to something nice after the surgery in January (arthrodesis in two places near the ankle with tiny metal implants) and then the 3 months of being confined to something terribly close to a nursing home.

        • You definitely deserved to treat yourself Ingeborg after your extensive surgery and rehab. And beautiful choice. I’m guessing you’ll spray lavishly and enjoy the bigger bottle.

          • Yes, I do get around, but with much trouble still. Cannot wait to be rid of this giant Aircast brace at the end of May and then get some really intense rehab from the middle of June. Thankfully there will be the sea shore and a nice park belonging to that hospital. as well as an indoor pool, always a plus in my book.

  11. Bad day to get this question as I am in London for work and took a break at Les Senteurs and went a little wild. Got Altaia Purple Land, an unexpected delight, Parle Moi Orris Tattooc, which I’ve been wanting and is cheaper here, and the new Dusita. The latter was the one I shouldn’t have gotten. It’s too expensive for what it is I fear. A couple of the Cloon Keen perfumes really appealed to me and I didn’t think how hard they are to get in the USA.

  12. Serge Lutens Le Participe Passe. This perfume hits me with a huge blast of immortelle. I love, love immortelle (have a few plants in the garden)! Birthdays are always such a good excuse for a full bottle of perfume 🙂

    • A very belated happy birthday , Elizabeth. I don’t think I have ever heard of Participate Passé however you have me intrigued. Does I last a long time on your skin?

      Like

      • Perfume tends to stick on my skin like glue, so I’m not a good one to ask but I would say its lasts a fairly long time. Kevin from Now Smell This wrote a review of the perfume and I was at Barneys the next day getting a sample. I love running my hands through our immortelle plants and I love Serge Lutens perfumes so this was a perfect match 🙂

    • I love immortelle as well. Just a heads up. Not only are birthdays an excellent excuse to buy new bottles, but so are holidays, sunny days and especially Tuesdays! And a sunny, holiday that falls on a Tuesday? Well…..you hit the jackpot, my dear!

  13. Most recent full bottles vintage Diva – 80% full, so probably doesn’t count as a full bottle. And 13 ml bottle of First Cut – Brigitte’s fault, that one. So since it’s someone else’s fault, it doesn’t count either. So, zero bottles for me 😇

  16. Mine is Carthusia 1681 because someone said it is fresher version of Dior Homme and some reviews also said it has similarities to Dior Homme. To be honest, I don’t think 1681 reminds me of Dior Homme unless I force myself to see some similarity. it does have iris and I think it is spicy. However, despite little or no similarities to Dior Homme (Which I LOVE), I still like 1681. It is nice and safe wear that does not project loudly but does long for quite a while.

Long time no post. My bad.
Looks like you are having a fab time on your travel.

My last full bottle purchase was Amouage Myth woman. The one prior to it was Guerlain Habit Rouge Dress Code 2017 (the faceted bottle).

I was too keen on either when I first tried them when they came out but re-tried when I saw them on sale at DJ.

i bet you bought lots of fragrant finds.

    Safe travel.
