Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 20.5 – 26.5.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. It’s almost lunchtime and I’m still commando after being away for my 30th Yale reunion this weekend. I took Seville a l’Aube and Ormonde Woman with me for those festivities. Today I will probably organize my samples and see what needs skin time.

    • I massively organized my samples by houses. This week I would like to take a break from sampling and just wear one fragrance. Next week I start the month of June with the intention of thunking one sample per day. I might just do this for the entire summer.

      • I need to do that. I have thousands of untouched samples. But I have thousands of bottles. Never enough time or skin to wear them all. Where do I turn?????

        • I did this today since I don’t have work. They were disorganized and all over the place. Now they’re better organized and it will make choosing easier 😉

          • I spent some time organizing samples as well today. I organized by houses and also by notes for many fragrances. I’m more motivated to sample and thunk now that I have a better idea of what I have.
            Thanks for the motivation!

            • You’re welcome. I feel the same way. Now that everything is in one place and organized it’s much easier to choose.

      • It’s in my cart! I may get both the EDT and EDP. I have Boucheron Jaipur Saphir from the late 90’s, and noticed it has been discontinued and more difficult to find. I feel I should stock up on Boucheron while available and affordable prices.

        Like

        • Those prices are beyond affordable… those bottles are practically free!!! I am glad I made some recent purchases in the last year because for one of them ( Gap Heaven) the price has now quadrupled! You are wise to stock up while you can.

          Like

        • Yep, go big or go home! If the price is right, then go for it. I’ve kicked myself a few times because I hesitated and lost out.

          • Agreed, I’ve lost out in the past as well and have been really analyzing the fragrances I love which will possibly be discontinued, reformulated, or not available for an affordable price.

        • I’ve not heard of Parfums Regine Regine Regine’s. I researched, and it is from 1989, the perfume era I am very fond of. The notes sounds wonderful. Did you wear it in the past, or is this a new find for you? Where did you purchase from? Fragrancenet does not have it, off to search eBay………..

          • Yes, I’ve owned it for about four years or more. I bought it on the predecessor to Notino but when I googled it I see it is available through a number of frag retailers.

            • Thanks Gina. I googled Regine and see it available for a very affordable price on FragranceX. I’m going to order it; the notes sound wonderful and I’ve been in a nostalgic 80-90s fragrance mode.

Just now I’m also trialling Different Drummer (Libertine) and Bondi Language (4160 Tues.) Not really sure about either of these. Dry down on both better than top notes. Will give them another go another night.

                  Like

                  • Whether or not you look like you would make a purchase is not the point. I went into Etiket today wearing faded jeans and a hoodie for Pete’s sake! My sister-in-law used to go into Holt Renfrew with a bag from the liquor store and her comfy, but decidedly shabby coat. And she could have bought out half of the Chanel boutique if she felt like it. The guy at Etiket was a doll. Spent an hour with me discussing his meetings with Andy Tauer and Hiram Green. He let me sniff and fool around to my heart’s content and made me samples of about a dozen scents. And that kind of sales experience makes it more likely that the consumer will spend there money there. For the record, I bought nothing. Just went home with my samples 😄

                    • Ha! So true! You never know a sale potential and shouldn’t make assumptions.

I’d be furious if that happened to me, those jumped-up snotty shop girls/boys, as you say, probably working for a pittance but worth their weight in bad attitude. I really would stomp out like a kid with a tantrum. And a good door slam behind me( unless they’re the sliding kind). I’d certainly contact management afterwards to register a very strongly worded complaint.

  8. Wearing Hilda Soliani Untitled #7. The best sample THUNK of the year. Great citrusy opening and then… it became a headache inducing vanilla bomb that becomes stronger as minutes pass. I have to be patient and keep its company until later tonight when I get home, take another shower and get rid of the blouse that I am wearing, which got several sprays of it.

However, in your position and given what your husband has done, I doubt that I, personally, would want to remain friends. It would take all my resolve just to remain civil. It will take time, but your life will eventually regain a feeling if ordered normalcy. Take solace here, and anywhere you can find it ❤️

  12. Cuir Beluga this morning. Went downtown for a cut and hi-lites. Since CB was long gone I decided to go sniffing at a niche perfume shop. Worked my way through Ormande Jayne, Heeley, Hiram Green, Nishane and Eau d’Italie. Quick bottle sniffs of some Olfactive Studios, Marly and HdP. Ignored Amouage (don’t know why) Ran out of steam for the rest of the lines. Came home with two goody bags of samples. I was looking for something easy to wear for summer/spring that wasn’t citrusy. I have Heeley l’Amandière on one hand and Eau d’Italie’s Easy to Love on the other. They’re both nice. Heeley being rather powdery, which pleases me and Ed’I a light, airy fruity/floral affair that is a bit soapy. Neither one seems to project much, but that’s okay for summer. Just not sure they’re worth the $$$.

    • What anout Au Lac from Eau d’ Italie? I don’t pick up much citrus in that , mostly it paints a picture of white water lilies. More floral than aquatic. But it’s big bottles, so it needs to be something you will use regularly.

      Like

    • How almondy was the Heeley? I would like a heavy duty almond such as the smell of the original Jergens lotion.

      Like

      • Not heavy duty almond. I thought it was more about the almond blossom than the actual almond. Very pretty, but I don’t think it’s what you’re going for. I reckon if someone made an Eau de Marzipan, that would be more up your alley!

          • So I forgot to mention that the reason I found more samples in the basement is that I was frantically searching for Teinte de Neige because I wanted to try it again so that I could tell Crikey I like it rather than not (first time it was full on baby powder and I wasn’t getting the marzipan vibe that everyone talks about). I did find it and sprayed it on the top of my hand before mowing the lawn. I don’t know what it is with my skin and weather but in the heat it did indeed bloom into this gorgeous creamy almond. So now I finally “get” the love for this scent. You know, funny thing is Absolu Pour le Soir did the same thing. In the dead of winter it was dirty panties (raunchy!!!) and I could only wear it in the house. In the summer it morphed into a sweet honeyed amber and it was glorious. I also prefer SSS Winter Woods in the summer…same deal…sweet ambery vanilla and no smoke whatsoever.

              Like

              • Maybe? But I haven’t tried the Caswell Masey Almond yet and that might very well be the one. Honestly, I am looking for one that smells like the original Jergens skin lotion because Mr M loves that scent .. it reminds him of his childhood.
And, yes, perfectly put, Marcella, the blooming in the heat affect!

It will get added to the pile which can sit in the basement as long as you like until you are ready for it. I haven’t tried the Eau Legere which I hear is stunning and very hard to come by. Fragrancenet sells the original and the Sensuelle for a very good price if anyone is interested. I still have a few samples of the original in the basement so I am good for now.

        • OMG! You forgot! I sent you a large decant of Eau Legere last year and you adored it! It never worked for me. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find anymore, but I am always in the look for it, because I know you love it. I will check among my sea of samples to see if there is still a sample hidding somewhere, waiting for you.

          • Holy cow!!! That is just hysterical! I am so sorry I forgot!!! I was NOT kidding when I told Cassie that my memory has gone the way of the dodo bird!!! And knowing me I will wear Sensuelle love it,thunk it and then six months from now probably forget that I had a decant of it! 😉 May I use the excuse that there are too many flankers and hard to keep track of? May I use my age as an excuse? LOL!

            • LOL! No worries! I barely remember what I spray one hour ago, especially when I am working on samples! I am going to blame it to age! I always make notes of perfumes that I really adore or don’t work for me so I can easily remember them. The rest I just enjoy for the time they last and almost sure I will forget about it!

              • Thank you for saying that! I feel God awful for forgetting! But at least I know now that I have tried and love all the BV flankers and the original 🙂

  30. and now Cresupule des Armes (or whatever the heck it’s called)…this one is skanky…even the tiny few drops in the 1ml sample which is now gone….

  31. and I have two Masque Milanos that I will wear after the lawn and my shower….Terralba and Luci ed Ombra…never heard of them…wonder if they are both d/c?

      • OK so they are already in your “what I will send to Marcella next” pile because I just sampled them….I would LOVE to hear your opinion on both!!! Terralba has a real herbal quality and a “pickle” vibe to me (this does NOT mean I dislike it because Stash smelled of pickles and I wore it daily one winter and finished a one ounce bottle in three weeks) and Luci ed Ombre smells like a suntan lotion from my very very distant past (not sure which one but I like it because it is conjuring up beach memories for me)
My favorite MM is still LAttessa which is one of the best irises to my nose…pl67 turned me on to that beauty!

  32. Shwartzkopf Leder….nice.
Genghis Khan…. so I thought how could such a lovely little lemon number have such an odd name….ha! It morphs into a Salome cousin. Thankfully I didn’t thunk because I am heading out to shop now LOL 🤣 😂

  33. Sampling Shangri-La, part two. I tried a bit last night. Today the entire vial has been drizzled down my neck. Ooo yeah baby! Love this. Similar in intention to Parfum de Thérèse. But the melon has been replaced by peach. It’s an incredibly smooth and rounded affair, moreso than PdT. Could that have something to do with the use of more naturals? Does Hiram Green use strictly naturals or a bit of both? Whatever, I need to get a decant of this and see how it fares when sprayed liberally.
    Oh yeah. It’s a thunk!
