Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 20.5 – 26.5.2019
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

I massively organized my samples by houses. This week I would like to take a break from sampling and just wear one fragrance. Next week I start the month of June with the intention of thunking one sample per day. I might just do this for the entire summer.

It really is annoying. I guess because I don’t look like someone who will make a purchase. But you can’t always judge a book by its cover.

Whether or not you look like you would make a purchase is not the point. I went into Etiket today wearing faded jeans and a hoodie for Pete’s sake! My sister-in-law used to go into Holt Renfrew with a bag from the liquor store and her comfy, but decidedly shabby coat. And she could have bought out half of the Chanel boutique if she felt like it. The guy at Etiket was a doll. Spent an hour with me discussing his meetings with Andy Tauer and Hiram Green. He let me sniff and fool around to my heart’s content and made me samples of about a dozen scents. And that kind of sales experience makes it more likely that the consumer will spend there money there. For the record, I bought nothing. Just went home with my samples 😄

Cuir Beluga this morning. Went downtown for a cut and hi-lites. Since CB was long gone I decided to go sniffing at a niche perfume shop. Worked my way through Ormande Jayne, Heeley, Hiram Green, Nishane and Eau d’Italie. Quick bottle sniffs of some Olfactive Studios, Marly and HdP. Ignored Amouage (don’t know why) Ran out of steam for the rest of the lines. Came home with two goody bags of samples. I was looking for something easy to wear for summer/spring that wasn’t citrusy. I have Heeley l’Amandière on one hand and Eau d’Italie’s Easy to Love on the other. They’re both nice. Heeley being rather powdery, which pleases me and Ed’I a light, airy fruity/floral affair that is a bit soapy. Neither one seems to project much, but that’s okay for summer. Just not sure they’re worth the $$$.

What anout Au Lac from Eau d’ Italie? I don’t pick up much citrus in that , mostly it paints a picture of white water lilies. More floral than aquatic. But it’s big bottles, so it needs to be something you will use regularly.

Not heavy duty almond. I thought it was more about the almond blossom than the actual almond. Very pretty, but I don’t think it’s what you’re going for. I reckon if someone made an Eau de Marzipan, that would be more up your alley!

So I forgot to mention that the reason I found more samples in the basement is that I was frantically searching for Teinte de Neige because I wanted to try it again so that I could tell Crikey I like it rather than not (first time it was full on baby powder and I wasn’t getting the marzipan vibe that everyone talks about). I did find it and sprayed it on the top of my hand before mowing the lawn. I don’t know what it is with my skin and weather but in the heat it did indeed bloom into this gorgeous creamy almond. So now I finally “get” the love for this scent. You know, funny thing is Absolu Pour le Soir did the same thing. In the dead of winter it was dirty panties (raunchy!!!) and I could only wear it in the house. In the summer it morphed into a sweet honeyed amber and it was glorious. I also prefer SSS Winter Woods in the summer…same deal…sweet ambery vanilla and no smoke whatsoever.
LikeLike
That makes perfect sense to me. Both Musc Ravageur and vintage Shalimar perfume are miraculous in warmer weather. All the nuances come out.
So? You’ve found your almond scent?

Maybe? But I haven’t tried the Caswell Masey Almond yet and that might very well be the one. Honestly, I am looking for one that smells like the original Jergens skin lotion because Mr M loves that scent .. it reminds him of his childhood.
And, yes, perfectly put, Marcella, the blooming in the heat affect!

hey! I’m here. Sorry to be AWOL again. I’ve been mostly offline lately while I’ve been trying to get my head/brain/self back in some sort of working order. It was quite a mauling from the black dog, but, doing much better again.
p.s.my dino/perfume account isn’t private. You should be able to see it at https://instagram.com/scentosaurs I think it was the stories on the other account you can’t see without logging in.

Hey Crikey! No worries. The black dog had me down and out most of the winter and part of spring. Tough battle is all I can say. Glad you’re feeling better. I’ve been lauding your writing skills on scentosaurs to whomever will listen! Geez, you’d think I was personally responsible for your cleverness. I did see you were wildly enthusiastic about Liz Moores’ latest. Royale Bengale? Or something like that? Care to elaborate for the home crew here? Plus, I want more deets too 😈 So not really a magnanimous request.

Releasing very soon…and I can’t wait, as I’m one wearing away from finishing my sample.

So, is it really big? Like MAAI or MEM? (I love them both and they are seriously ‘important’ on me) They keep me transfixed. Or, more like Salome. That is one I will be getting a FB of for sure. Possibly Anubis but later in the year. So…..what I’m saying is, does it wear easily or does it require thought and attention. For me, Salome is practically a comfort perfume. Anubis requires a little more dedication. MEM and MAAI……well they’re on another category entirely!

It’s a tricksy one in that it’s very present and not shy, but it’s incredibly soft in feel… so not shouty, but it’s not a hermessence watercolor by any stretch. Very languid and sleepy and bedsheet warm, but not skanky.

Benjoin resin and carnation oil on one hand thanks to pl67 and testing vintage Bal a Versailles. I CANNOT believe that I wore this in ballet classes in my late teens!!! My mother’s boss would make frequent trips to Paris and would always buy perfume for the ladies in his office. She didn’t care for it and gave it to me. I loved it because an older ballet dancer whom I admired wore it all the time and always chewed mint gum to hide her cigarette breath. The combo of BaV and mint and cigarette smoke takes me back to good memories. So grateful to be able to smell it again. I have so many stories attached to so many perfumes.

Have Bat a proper texting last night as I had only sniffed briefly from the bottle at the shop. Ugh! Disastrous. Used laundry stain remover to get if off. To be fair, it was an accurate representation of garden dirt, freshly dug. There was a very slight hint of rotting fruit under the dirt. Really? It’s much softer than the original which I adore. I like it as well. I could see wearing this one in the summer and the original in the fall/winter. I also tried the absolute which I thought was sweeter. Honestly, I like them all. The Sensuelle is a decant and if you want a sample let me know. It will get added to the pile which can sit in the basement as long as you like until you are ready for it. I haven’t tried the Eau Legere which I hear is stunning and very hard to come by. Fragrancenet sells the original and the Sensuelle for a very good price if anyone is interested. I still have a few samples of the original in the basement so I am good for now.

I was not a huge fan of BV. It seems to me that oftentimes when one perfume of a given line pleases you then there’s a good likelihood that others will as well. And vice versa.

OMG! You forgot! I sent you a large decant of Eau Legere last year and you adored it! It never worked for me. I will check among my sea of samples to see if there is still a sample hidding somewhere, waiting for you.

And knowing me I will wear Sensuelle love it,thunk it and then six months from now probably forget that I had a decant of it! 😉 May I use the excuse that there are too many flankers and hard to keep track of? May I use my age as an excuse? LOL!

LOL! No worries! I barely remember what I spray one hour ago, especially when I am working on samples! I am going to blame it to age! Sampling Shangri-La, part two. I tried a bit last night. Today the entire vial has been drizzled down my neck. Ooo yeah baby! Love this. Similar in intention to Parfum de Thérèse. But the melon has been replaced by peach. It’s an incredibly smooth and rounded affair, moreso than PdT. Could that have something to do with the use of more naturals? Does Hiram Green use strictly naturals or a bit of both? Whatever, I need to get a decant of this and see how it fares when sprayed liberally.
Oh yeah. It’s a thunk!
