Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 3.6 – 9.6.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Tested Dilettante last night. Nope. Must be that I’m not keen on orange blossom? That’s Casablanca as well, right?
On to Slowdive this morning. Ohhh yesss! A rich, syrupy and languid honey punctuated with whiffs of neroli and tuberose. Really good stuff. And it’s name mirrors my day – a slowdive back into work. A bathroom and kitchen remodel for the owners’ first ever home purchase. And wow! They are so excited. I’m looking forward to this one.

  2. Gucci Eau de Parfum. Winter here in South Australia, so I am looking forward to bringing out all the rich, deep, syrupy, gutsy scents that I love.
A fragrant friend sent me a decant of Chloe Nomade, and I am in love. There’s something addictive about it. Anyone else here a fan?

    • I haven’t tried it yet but if I am not mistaken I think Cassie and Kate like it. I will sniff it next time I am in Sephora.
Are you wearing the Gucci that comes in the heavy bottle bwith brown juice? That’s a good one

  3. At the moment I’m gassing my husband out of the house. I’m participating in a traveling box of perfume organized by Lukas of chemistinthebottle. There are at least 75 perfumes in this box and I’m systematically trying everything on paper strips or skin. At the moment I have Memo Tigers Nest, Heeley Coccobello, Jo Loves Pink Vetiver, and Majda Bakkali fusion Sacrée Obscur on various parts of my arms. After showering I will probably give Guerlain Encens Mythique d’orient a full wear test.

  4. Testing three from Omnia on my hands…one smells of milk, the other anise, the other pepper… making me hungry.

    • And I am so proud of my nose for recognizing these notes before I even researched!!
By the way, is anyone familiar with Profumum Aqua e Zaccure? Does it smell like Love’s Baby Soft and/or Pink Sugar to anyone else? I wore it on my hand last night and wondered how similar it was/is to what I remember of vintage Loves Baby Soft.

      Like

      • But isn’t it sweet? Most of the Profumum’s I’ve tried are quite sweet. Not in a sickly, cloying way tho. I don’t recall LBS being sweet. A bit of floral, a bit of powder and a gentle musk. Is your recollection of LBS as being a sweet scent?

        Like

        • Yes. LBS registered sweet on my skin. Sweet floral musk….. definitely sweet. Dame Black Flower Mexican Vanilla reminds me of LBS too. Have you tried that one? If no I will send it too ( oh lordy how will I remember? LOL 🤣 😂). Keep in mind though that it’s been almost 50 years since I sniffed LBS and I never tried the multitude of reformulations.

          Like

          • I wore Black Flower Mexican Vanilla quite frequently and saw no connection to LBS at all!! It amazes me at how differently our skins receive scent and how our noses interprets it!! Incredible.

    • Try layering the milk and anise. When I was a little girl my Dad used to heat up milk and dissolve an anise blokje (Dutch anise cube, sweetened) into it before bed. It smelled fantastic and tasted even better.

  5. Le Labo Iris 39. Needed something easy for a dentist’s appointment. Still more dental work to have done, but nothing which cannot wait until August. So glad I made it there, so won’t have to worry in the weeks to come.

      • Going into hospital on Tuesday for intensive rehab for two weeks. It’s on the coast with its own beach and a nice park. So I’m hoping for good weather, much time in the pool and more rapid progress than here at home. My foot is still rather painful during activity, but getting better.

  6. After my triumphant purchase yesterday I am wearing Mugler Supra Floral today. Alas, it does not last a full day, but it did okay in the morning. I should thank the perfume mathematicians over at now smell this for giving me the tools to talk myself into buying it…

  7. I am wearing Bvlgari Au the Noir I just received today. It has a medicinal opening (gives me a distant vibe of Gucci Guilty Absolute for Men) and so far it feels like it is relatively a linear composition that stays more or less the same throughout its life.

  8. Tested Ormonde Jayne Woman last night. I was amazed that it smelled so nauseating on my skin. I thought this was a universally loved perfume? Fragrantica calls it a chypre???? Not on my skin. No green whatsoever, no oakmoss, no nuthin’, except for a whole lot of wood. A thick, dense faux-sandalwood roiling in a slurry of revoltingly sweet cedar. I had to scrub. Here come the villagers again 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

  9. This morning Profumum Olibanum…..another Salome cousin.. nothing sweet about this one
Now at work blending Madera and White Madera as recommended by Marcella. Two more thunks.

  11. I’m laying off perfume for a while. Last weekend was a complete and utter disaster. Just as we were about to get ready for the wedding, my wife tripped and fell on the stairs. We spent Saturday night in the ER rather than at the reception. Turns out she broke her ankle in two places and was in the hospital until Tuesday.

Now I am a prime carer for about 6 weeks and, because my wife reacts to so many perfumes, I will be swearing off fragrances for the foreseeable.

  12. Hi everybody I had two busy weeks, one for fun the other for business. Now I’m back to “normal” for a while and I enjoy it because I feel like a stranger in my own apartment. I’ve missed my bed, my bathroom, my kitchen and of course my choice of perfumes! I’ve been using up samples and I’ve been thunking them happily: Zoologist Beaver and Dragonfly, Carner Volcano, Juliet has a Gun Gentlewoman. For special occasions I wore Jubilation XV Extrait from a decant.
Wishing you all a great week 🙂

  13. E Coudray Rose Tuberose, very light on the tuberose, heavy on the musk, in fact, the drydown isn’t a hundred million miles away from Nomade.

  14. Testing Hiram Green Hyde. Great smokey opening not too far removed from Anubis. The dry down goes rather sweet and muddled. I prefer Anubis.
Honestly, of all the many samples I received during last week’s sniff-a-thon, none of them have really bowled me over. Many were likeable. A couple were scrubbers. Slowdive stood out as being unique and I ordered a decant to determine if it would continue to hold my interest.

    Like

    • I haven’t tried Hyde and I am not interested in that one. Like you I have been sampling and thunking and honestly only one out of everything I would consider for a full bottle. I enjoy sampling and getting my nose on those that you all are wearing but I am happy with what I have in full bottles already .

      • And right now I REEK because I am once again testing and thunking at my desk at work. I have a few more dabber samples left and then I might take a break before I move on to sprayer samples in the upcoming weeks.

        Like

      • I get that. The more I sniff and sample, the better my collection looks. Although there are a few FB I would like to add. Notably Salome and probably Tiger’s Nest. I suspect there are others as well, so it’s a good thing I forgot what they are!

        Like

    • OMG, Hyde was on my skin pure smoke, then rubber and burnt wood and then a biiiiiiiiit of something green. Unbearable. I usually hate it when I smell of barbecue smoke and that’s exactly it.
And the dark color of the juice was like a self tanning lotion on my skin. It would stain all the light colored shirts and blouses.
Unfortunately it’s the only Hiram Green I’ve tried.

  18. Aventus!!!! Home now and testing it. Starts off with the most addictive pineapple note…holy 🐄….but then morphs into powdery and reminds me a lot of Jo Malone 154 which reminds me of Jin.
I don’t dislike it but I would rather the pineapple stick around into the drydown.

  19. Last night tested L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme. I really like fig as a note.
In the wee hours of the morning testing L’Artisan Pimento and Fou d’
Absinthe…both come across as foody to me in different ways… have no clue as to what the notes are.
Also testing 4711 Myrrh and Kumquat…I had been eyeballing those different 4711s because they are huge and dirt cheap and easy to decant.

    Like

    • The 4711 has excellent lasting power for a cologne. Well worth the price …I mean it’s practically free!!!
Piment Brulant is fascinating….spicy pepper with sweets, to green tomato leaf vibe, to diffuse and sweet floral drydown. Fou D’ Absinthe is anise and cumin to me and the smell of warm skin….kinda sexy fragrance a la Salome.

  20. Five o’clock au Gingembre today. Rainy day again.

Last workday before a long weekend, and of course yesterday evening was just the time for my manual wheelchair to get a flat tyre. So now it seems I will have to do all my packing wobbling around on crouches unless a miracle happens and the technician will take it as an express repair after normal working hours. Sorry folks, just needed to vent my frustration!

    • Gah, I can feel your frustration. It’s just flipping typical that things go wrong at the worst possible time. Vent away, we don’t mind at all😉

  21. Hello All. Sorry I have been absent I have just read the entire thread. Greg I’m sorry your wife broke her ankle so badly…were you able to see the actual vows? I wish her a speedy recovery. Marcella I remember the excitement of wanting to renovate, and I hope your client’s enthusiasm remains. Ingeborg , having your rehab place close to a beach will hopefully be good and here is hoping the food they serve is decent!!! Melanie I have been using the items in your recent package but I’m yet to fall in love with anything. I think I will dedicate next Tuesday to really sniffing properly. Hello Portia!!! Fazal , Perfumluvr and Cassie I’m sorry I’ve forgotten what you’ve been up to, so I wave to you. My life continues to be a shitestorm, so I have been wearing fragrances which give me strength, calmness and warmth….Winter is upon us, dear friends with temps hitting early teens on good days , and single digits on bad days. Scents in rotation over the last fortnight or so include Grey Flannel, Soul, Covet, Stash, Fancy, and Tainted Love. Have a fab Saturday everyone.

  24. Late to get going on here today, have been very busy trying to declutter my house, have spent hours on my knees feeding paper into the stove. There are decades of paperwork in our office, hardly any of it mine, and I’m sneaking armfuls of it out of there. He won’t even miss it! Payslips from the mid 80s, and cheque book stubs from then too. I don’t exaggerate when I call hubby a hoarder. We have someone coming to look at the house to give us a rough valuation next Tuesday, and something really needs to start happening.
Anywayyy, my scent today is copious sprays of my beloved Songes.

    Like

    • ahahaha! a hoarder 🙂

Were you inspired by Portia’s post and Kathleen’s comment on Songes? I hope she gets herself a bottle because it can still be had for a reasonable price online.

  25. Guess what I wore last night and today everyone?? Brigitte!! I was honoured to receive a sample of Mrs. Marzipan’s namesake, custom-made fragrance. And it’s beautiful. A soft, gentle lilac plus ‘I don’t know what else’. I noticed a very nice creaminess fairly early on in it’s development. Mrs. M said there’s sandalwood. So that explains it. In spite of it’s easy-going nature and polite demeanour it still has lots of presence and great longevity. I wholeheartedly concur with Mrs. M’s opinion that it smells better than some of the dreck we’ve smelled coming from the niche sector. Absolutely enjoyed the experience of wearing it. Thanks for sharing Brigitte, Brigitte!

    • It’s my pleasure, my friend. Funny thing is, I didn’t think you would like it because there’s musk in there. You proved me wrong 😂

    • Perhaps you should have your own custom blend made. Wouldn’t that be a treat. What do you think you’d have in it?

      Like

      • That’s a tough question. It would have to have some animalics for sure. Maybe a slightly indolic jasmine, perhaps a bit of rose. And a brighter opening note, bergamot maybe? I wouldn’t mind throwing in some vanilla.
We had a shop back in the 70’s that allowed you to concoct your own perfume. If I remember, bottles of soliflores were lined up. You could sniff and decide what to mix with a dropper. Crude system. All I remember was that mine had a boat load of ylang ylang in it. It was umm…..the word unwearable comes to mind.
I saved some Brigitte to send to you. Which was quite the selfless act cuz I really, really liked it. Highly unusual behaviour on my part 😜
