Hello Fellow Fumies,
At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.
Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
Last Weeks Winner: DIANA

Saturday Question: Name One Perfume Released In Your Birth Year?
I was looking for another tears releases and decided to see what lovelies 1968 had produced. A Pretty good year really, six that I know the company or the fragrances themselves are still readily available. I’ve gone for the only one I have a full bottle of in my collection but you don’t need to own your selection.
Please comment on other people’s if they have a favourite, or they stole yours.
My Answer:
Yes, it’s Estee by Estee Lauder. A cool aldehydic, slightly fruity floral from 1968, with a heft nod to the chypre genre. Still available to this very day. You might wear this baby or have memories of family members wafting it lavishly on occasions.
Hello, since 1978 was the year that Jean Laporte launched his very first fragrances under the L’Artisan Parfumeur label, I cannot help but choose the emblematic Mûre et Musc from that year.
I’m looking forward to reading everybody else’s choices!

Well 1983 was a good year for perfumery 🙂 There is Paris by YSL, Missoni Uomo, L’ombre dans L’eau by Diptyque and of course Jardins de Bagatelle by Guerlain 😋 There is also Gold Man and Woman from Amouage launched in 83’ but i have a bad relation with them 😄

Left to my own devices I probably would have guessed Eau de B.C., but of course, I googled and came up with Diorissimo. It was released in 1956 and interestingly it was probably one of the earliest perfumes I wore. I think my mother gave it to me as a present when I first started showing an interest in perfumes at age 15? She felt it was a ‘suitable’ perfume for a young girl, which made me think of it as an innocent scent. That association ensured I rarely wore it because, of course, I thought I was worldly and sophisticated. So I bought Shalimar which remains, to this day, one of my all time favorite perfumes.

Ted Lapidus Envol in 1981, and since Envol means flight, we must remember George Washington who was one of the most badass fighter pilots of all time and led the campaign to take back airports from the British 😀

I didn’t know that Lapidus had done a frag called Envol, there is a Cartier one by that name now, eh?
Portia xx
LikeLike
Portia, yes there is one by Cartier named L’Envol which I also love as I mentioned a little while ago. The original Envol was by Lancome released around mid 20th century. The second perfume is by Ted Lapidus and it was the more well-known of the two Envol perfumes though still relatively obscure until Cartier came with one and now of course, Cartier is the one people imagine when they hear Envol. So far my experience with the name Envol has been a success since I love both Lapidus and Cartier versions. Lapidus one is a green floral chypre though quite a wearable one even by today’s standards as you know some chypres from that era feel quite unwearable today to many people.
LikeLike
I must add though it is not green like, let’s say Chanel No.19, Balmain Vent Vert, Capucci Yendi, or Jacomo Silences etc which are proper green fragrances. But Lapidus Envol does give me very light green vibes and it is possible that many don’t get that vibe.

Santa Maria Novella Melograno which was featured on one of the Bond movies. I have a vintage bottle gifted to me by the lovely Tara C and I share it with the youngest Marzipan who uses it like an aftershave splash. It smells amazing on him. Reminds me a lot of vintage Emeraude. So it’s definitely unisex and gorgeous.

Futur by Robert Piguet, still available;
Noel 67 by Le Galion, discontinued.
I never tried any of them, but would love to own at least one from that year (1967). Futur would be a good candidate. Maybe for my birthday!

I had a sample of Asthete which I won from Portia’s draw which I thunked a while ago. Did you know that the perfumer who bought Le Galion from Napoleon’s brother in law was the perfumer who made Miss Dior, Diorling and Arpege? and Twisted Lily is completely out of stock of most of the Le Galions.

Oh well, so this question made me feel old (granted I’m older than many of you). Seems YSL released his first perfume Y in 1964, other than that I couldn’t relate to other than the scent of Brut, which was never (thankfully) a favourite by my father.
I very distinctly remember green chypres being presented as new chypres by SAs in Paris when I first visited there in 1983 and I still really like the green bite of galbanum and miss the oak moss in perfume. Now, the new chypres are totally different creations.

I seem to be the first of the class of 1960 – a good year by repute, Madame Rochas and Capricci among others. I confess I’ve never smelled either, but I should get checking! I was, however, saddened to find that I was born in a *legendarily* bad year for French wine, and to add insult to injury, my sister was born in a great one!

I’m even worse off: had my mother been living in Japan that year and due to give birth in February the chances are that I wouldn’t have been born at all. A baby born then was seen as a scourge and very bad luck. Oh how I laughed when I read that. The birth rate that month/year took a huge dip.

And yet Emperor Naruhito was born in February 1960. The nobs can make their own luck …

Oops, I didn’t mention that my year was 1966. A terrible year to have a February baby. I’d say if my mum was still around that she may have agreed with some aspects of that thinking 😉 I surely tested her patience and resilience.

Ah, the dreaded female Fire Horse. I have heard (from a Chinese friend) that Dragon years in the past were difficult in China; everyone wanted a Dragon son, but no one wanted a Dragon daughter – too strong-willed, no one wanted to marry them. I have a Dragon daughter, but luckily I’m not worried about needing to marry her off. One of the things I love about the modern world, along with flush toilets and air conditioning.
