Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 29.7 – 4.8.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  2. I’m going to wear my DSH/American Perfumer Colorado today to see what it is like in the heat. I wore it quite a few times in the winter/snowy days, so I’m curious to see what it does in the summer.

  4. Commando for beach days. The air is already so thickly scented with that unique only-on-a-northern-sea-coast fragrance there is really no point in wearing perfume during the day.
I am, however, debating what I will wear tonight. We’re going to the lobster pound later for picked lobster meat. We’ll take it home and eat out on the front porch which is beachside. Salome? Will it not clash with Eau de Lobster. Actually, Sex and the Sea!! I’ll bet it’s salty undercurrent will work magic. Decisions, decisions 🙄

  5. Vintage Givenchy Gentleman. Words cannot describe its beauty. Even though its summer, the perfume still bloomed well without overwhelming me. If one sprays just 2 or 3 times, it is wearable even in summer. I thank the person who created this perfume. The perfume world would have been so incomplete without vintage Givenchy Gentleman!

  6. No scent during the day, but loads of Aqua Minimes colognes in the evening. Warm and muggy weather, and it’s going to rain again Tuesday.

  7. Hello friends in perfume world!!!!! I have been missing you all very much. I ask for your positive vibes over the next week, esp. on Saturday when my house is auctioned. I have been wearing many different scents since my last post, including the samples from Melanie.(Tokyo Milk) and my usual cheapies of Deseo, Green Tea and Dark Obsession. The more expensive Tobacco Vanille and Coromandal (both belong to “him”) Also the gorgeous vintage Samsara, which simply blooms on cold days. And finally the scent we both wore today to visit our estate agent; Ted Lapidus Altimar. I bought it approx 5 years ago as a gift ,a 100ml bottle. Sadly about 5 years ago the mechanism on the sprayer stopped working and despite many attempts by each of us it wouldn’t work.

  8. Terracotta today. Need it to lighten the heaviness. Heat without sun. And then the occasional deluge. What the hell?

  9. I’m wearing an op shop find today: Rocabar. This is great for a winter’s day, lots of balsamic warmth. I understand the name means “saddle cloth”, which I’m not that keen on smelling like.

  10. The days are long and stressful Very little sleep or if I do slept it is fitful. Yesterday I woke and made some soup then packed away some clothes. I didn’t wear any perfume yesterday. because I didn’t want to associate a smell with my misery. It is now 2 am August 1 st I have just joined the Guerlain party and applied Samsara. I have also been looking for places to rent OMG what a minefield that is!!!

  11. Wearing Parfums DelRae Amoureuse today. What a spectacular and amazing perfume. Unfortunately, it sounds like the Parfums DelRae is closing so I am running to my perfume store to get a backup bottle.

  13. Five o’clock au gingembre this evening, I need to relax and try to get to sleep! Struggling with sore muscles, but glad I am back to some sort of exercise routine.

Getting up to the third floor (or fourth, depending on how you count) was no easy task today after cardio and strength training two days in a row. And the lift is out of service for at least a week, which is unusual, but not totally unexpected during the main vacation period.Good thing I have helpful neighbours who volunteer to go to the post office for me or do other small errands!

    • What better choice for relaxing than Five O’clock au Gingembre. It’s the loveliest of all the Serge Lutens offerings to me Ingeborg and fits like a glove at all times.
Congratulations on getting back into your exercise routine. I’m going to get back into it next week.

      • Hi All. The day before the auction I am feeling in control . However I know I won’t be tomorrow. I thunked a sample of Spiritulle Double Vanille. I haven’t worn it for quite a long time and forgotten how yummy it is. My parents visited today . My mother was wearing one of her signature scents ; Je Reviens by Worth. I may not be able to log on to here for a couple of days so please think of me occasionally.

  14. LHeure de Nuit. I am doubling up on my Guerlain testing. One in the morning and one in the evening.
Last night also added to the top of my hand Regina Harris Amber Vanilla oil. I could still smell it in the morning. It starts off smoky and animalic to my nose but the far drydown is sweet. It’s one of those fragrances that fascinates me. And the bottle is stunning.

    • Guerlain testing has to be the best of all testing. Although those Auphorie perfumes you tested with such gluttony sounded extremely appealing as well!
And, talking about gluttony, I just applied a massive amount of vintage Shalimar perfume. I thought an incredibly liberal application might bring out the depth and richness. It did help, but still doesn’t smell as I recalled. Damn it all! I need to win that lotto. First purchase will be a 60’s Shalimar perfume. And back ups too!

  15. Today I wore 06130 Cedre. Much milder than Rocabar, sort of powdery woods, if that makes sense. Not obtrusive at all. I have a long trip in the car tomorrow with some folks; I think I’ll wear it again for that.

I suspect I had some luck at the op shop today; I’m still researching it. It was a bottle of vintage perfume, but it had no markings on it, just a label. With a bit of help, I’ve worked out that it’s a vintage Helena Rubinstein, but I haven’t nailed down the perfume or the era yet. Could be exciting; I’ll let y’all know what turns up.

    • Are there any good pages online to research about perfume bottles? I have a few empty ones after my grandmother and am wondering if I should just toss them, give them away or try to sell them. Apart from a Millot Crepe de Chine, I’m not sure what they are. Nothing truly iconic.

      • I am not familiar with perfume bottle websites; however, Crepe de Chine is iconic. I was recently reading the review by Neil Chapman in his Perfume book. He has high regards for the fragrance. I hope you can get a sniff out of the empty bottle!

  18. A good, but relatively cheap, perfume today: Korres White Tea, Bergamot and Freesia.

I was looking online for a good deal on a partial bottle of SL Five o’clock au gingembre, but only found the same seller as in May, who wants just as much for a used bottle as Strawberrynet charges for a NIB bottle. Also found Houbigant Iris des Champs has now a thirty percent higher price at a local discount site than when I looked a couple of weeks ago, so now I’m sitting on my hands and trying not to buy anything!

My father is going to Vienna in September and would shop for me, given exact instructions. But it’s not too easy to find out what the niche perfumeries stock and I have a number of perfumes I’m curious about, but where I cannot find samples. And a few I want which are so expensive, I’d rather not have family members shopping for me 😂

    • It’s always tricky to navigate pricing; which ones will continue to rise in price, and which ones will drop in price at discounters with time. I peruse the discounters sites often to monitor prices and see what is new. For some my patience has paid off with reduced pricing, and sometimes I miss out and have regrets.

      • I think maybe some sites look at the statistics showing how many people have looked at a particular fragrance and then they adjust prices to be more in line with their competitors. It’s how it’s done in sports equipment and the electronic gadgets online stores according to our consumer advisory bureau.

    • Have you had a look at Sniph site. They’re based in Stockholm so no problems with shipping to you. Not a huge selection but worth a look. They sell 8ml decants of each fragrance.

      • Went to the Sniph page and for the monthly service with 8 ml decant, they only send to Swedish adresses. Oh, well!

        Like

        • Oh? I didn’t sign up for the monthly service. You don’t need to do that. I just ordered decants of a couple that I wanted. Shipping was no problem at all.

        • I just had another look at the site. So sorry, I gave you wrong information. It delivers to UK and Irl addresses only. I thought it was European delivery.

  20. Testing Auphorie Myora and Auphorie Binturong….both beautiful and unusual compositions. They are so smooth and we’ll blended it’s hard for me to discern the notes.

    Like

    • That would be Mayura…which my blasted autocorrect wants to change to Natural!! It has a real vintage vibe… Very musky and warm…the Binturong ( which autocorrect now has in its database!) is making me want a cup of coffee! To my nose it is coffee and Amber. But there’s something about the Mayura that reminds me of a scent from my very distant past…Miss Dior? It’s a very sensual scent…. similar to Salome…or in that genre.

Stopped off at my local pharmacy and while there had a spritz of Alien Fusion in my right arm (this will be in my near future) and the newest Mugler release that I cannot for the life of me think what it’s called🙄 At least I’m house faithful.

  24. J’Adore is one of the few bottles I drained quickly. Shortly after it was released, my sister-in-law gifted me a bottle, which surprised me because she is not a perfume-wearer and has respiratory allergies to almost everything! I loved that bottle!
I’ve purchased a couple of bottles since and apparently the reformulations aren’t what the original was. I wish I had the original to compare.

    • I remember sampling the original way back when….I had quite a few samples (remember the days when the SAs you used to hand them out freely?) so never needed to buy a full bottle. I agree wholeheartedly that it isn’t the same…the original was a POWERHOUSE…however, I do very much like the current formulation…it’s more subdued, fresh and lovely. As with all the other decants, I am going to sample again in cooler weather and then in really cold weather 🙂

      • and I love that your sister in law gifted you a bottle even though she doesn’t care for perfume!!!! Makes it that much more special. I think I am most drawn to perfumes that tell a story…my own or someone else’s, if that makes any sense? Even if they aren’t earth shattering, if there is a story or memory attached to the fragrance, it goes up a notch in my book. Also, if I associate it with someone…
