Mood Scent 4: Playing The Diva!

Hey there APJ,

It’s Mood Scent 4 week. Today the theme seems picked perfectly for my tastes. It’s always good for me to have a few Diva scents around as I spend so much time being one. So it was fun to think of a few of my lovelies that I wear especially for those show stopping moments when I want to smell as outrageously fabulous as I look.

So excited to be blogging with these three superstars again:  Esperanza L’Esperessence, Megan Megan In Sainte Maxime and Samantha I Scent You A Day. Check theirs out too.

Mood Scent 4: Playing The Diva!

Ballets Rouges by Olympic Orchids

Blood red roses, dark desires, swampy earth and the chiaroscuro of dappled sunlight. Ballets Rouges is a witches brew that is so dynamic and attention grabbing even I spritz with care. A knockout because it’s so different to anything else that people around you are wearing. It is also gorgeously voluptuous.

Le Participe Passé by Serge Lutens

Serge Lutens has gone back to his roots with Le Participe Passé. Stewed fruits and sizzling spices over a resinous base. This is my kind of gourmand. When I wear it, the world feels conquerable and within my grasp. It also has that raspy quality of a prohibition nightclub singer.

Mitsouko by Guerlain

Want to smell like a DIVA? Mitsouko is still the most splendid fruity chypre in my collection. Everything else seems wan & pale compared to it, even now. Mitsouko is the perfectly pitched, full throaty roar of the tragic ballad chanteuse whose voice sounds like her heart is breaking right on stage before your eyes. Compelling and gorgeous and with that oak mossy dry down that is as stupendous as the open.

Mitzah by DIOR

Of all François Demachy’s output Mitzah is by far my favourite. Spiced honey and roses with a spectacular amber/patchouli underneath that wipes the floor with every other of the rose/amber genre. Not only is it glitteringly gorgeous but its projection and longevity are outstanding. Made even more DIVA-like because it’s now only available in limited quantities from Paris boutiques.

Mohur Extrait by Neela Vermeire Creations

More roses! This time cut with a beautiful bouquet, oudh, resins, herbs and spices and amber. Mohur extrait is the plushest, most intricate weave of fragrance I own. It has depth and breadth and will fill the room as you enter it. Yet somehow, Mohur extrait still lets you be in charge. It’s potent but not overpowering, alluring and enchanting but you can still think while wearing it. What you will feel is invincible and all noses will be pointed your way.

So what do you wear when you’re Playing The Diva?

  1. I knew when I saw the theme for this Mood Scent that you would choose Mohur!! I have been enjoying all of the different choices by each of you. I think my diva scent would have to be Fracas. Not surprisingly I rarely wear it- not too much occasion for diva!

  2. What an absolutely fantastic piece, Portia! This line is bloody genius “Mitsouko is the perfectly pitched, full throaty roar of the tragic ballad chanteuse whose voice sounds like her heart is breaking right on stage before your eyes” Wow. I am going to give up writing after reading that and take up knitting. Love it and you!

  3. Play the diva?
Pfft. I didn’t come to play, I came to *slay*.

    Fracas. Theo Fennell Scent. Onda.
Maybe New Sibet, for the Edith Sitwell end of terrifying, out-of-time, not quite of this same world version…

  4. I don’t know about diva, but the scents I wear when SERIOUSLY dressed up are Amouage Gold and Guerlain Vol de Nuit. Others I own in sample sizes that would fit the bill are Boucheron, and Amouage Memoir.

    • Wonderful Diva fragrances for dress up! I adore adore adore Boucheron! And Amouage Gold and Memoir are spectacular as well. I’ve yet to sniff Vol de Nuit, need to pursue that I think!

      • Yes, do! I read a great anecdote about it somewhere — very rich, dressed up, bejeweled lady goes to department store and asks for her classic signature scent, Vol de Nuit. Sales assistant suggests she try a newer scent. Lady responds, “Honey, I got where I am by wearing Vol de Nuit, and you don’t mess with success!” I can’t remember where I read this funny story, but it is truly diva-esque!
