I recently read a post from one of my favourite UK bloggers, where he mentioned that he had a certain perfume in heavy rotation.  I found this highly amusing and dropped him a message asking what exactly heavy rotation meant.  “Twice” he replied, which was one more time than I thought he would say.

I was totally inspired by Tara’s Most Worn – Summer 2019 post of last week.  It not only had me looking at what I had been wearing, but also stirred the above thoughts on perfume rotation.

I awoke to the same Instagram post from EauMG as Tara did, in which EauMG asked an older lady what she had on that smelled so incredible.  Chanel’s Paris – Venise, with Lutens’ Iris Silver Mist layered on top was the answer.   I own both and immediately gave it a go.  It was my Scent of the Cookie Run, the perfume I choose to wear on the day I take the orders to Salzburg.  The guy who runs the warehouse where I deliver knows me well, and knows I am a perfume junkie, although he has never commented on anything I have worn.  This day however was different.  He commented that I smelled amazing.  Jaw drop.    It really is a freaking amazing mix of scent, and I have worn that combo five times over the last fortnight. I do believe that might be heavy rotation?

Chanel Paris – Venise, layered with Lutens’ Iris Silver Mist, and Venise on its own.  (ISM alone is only for cooler weather, but layered it is brilliant in the heat.)

I have worn other stuff too, but most of the last ten weeks or so have seen me wearing the above selection, all of them a number of times.  Indeed you could say I had them in regular rotation.

I have it from an extremely reliable, but not infallible, source that the 15ml bottles  will be launched at the end of August.  There are forty flaçons available now though, Baccarat, 50 ml.,  around ten thousand Euros.  You will have to hurry if you want to order it as thirty are already spoken for.

  1. Heavy rotation for me was seven weeks straight of Assam of India. I would like to try that again but right now I’m having too much fun sampling new goodies.

  2. I call that heavy rotation. I own so many fragrances (at least 3,000) that heavy rotation for me probably is more than once per year. LOL.

  3. I went from “yey!” to “nooooo” in about one second after reading about coromandel in perfume strength… BOOOO! Or did i read it wrong and there will be normal flacons at normal (ha!) prices later? My brain may have temporarily melted at the sight of that 10.000 euro price point…

  4. Reaching for the same perfume twice in fortnight is heavy rotation for someone like us. (I heard Americans don’t have the word ‘fortnight’, which is a shame if it’s true. So useful)
    Wore Cedre Sambac yesterday and I’m still lemming Deauville. I have high hopes for Coromandel extrait.
    Thanks for the mention! I should have included Sale Gosse because I’ve worn that multiple times this summer but being a decant, I totally overlooked it.

  6. For me, heavy rotation would be at least once a week. Right now Vanille 44 is in heavy rotation, as I’m wearing it multiple times a week as my evening scent.

    • Yeah – that is certainly proper rotation. Is Vanille 44 Le Labo? I so want to have a LL but need a proper try of the ones that I am interested in. Maybe in London next time …..

  7. Hey Val,
    I have a bunch of frags on the desk and on a tray in the wardrobe. About 12-15 of those I’ll wear on a monthly basis, some even weekly. Then I put everything back in their boxes and start again.
    Currently Mohur, 1969, Pour un Homme de Caron, Mitsouko, Velours and Mitzah seem to be ruling the roost.

    • I have worn 1969 a few times, yeah. Very nice perfume, specially layered with some patchouli of some sort. That sounds like a surprisingly smart way of wearing a number of frags. I think I kind of do that without realizing it. (Luckily) I do not have as many perfumes as you do!! And since you’r here, OK – I have to say it, vintage Jicky Parfum is damn good. It is. 🙂

    • Portia, I’m totally with you. I do it the same way, only I pull out some 6-8 fragrances and wear them during a month or so and then pick another bunch. It’s actually a way to possibly thunk a bottle every now and then.

          • Neva that was my MO for decades before I discovered perfume blogs and decant sites. I would own no more than 6 to 8 bottles and wear them exclusively. When one was thunked it got replaced with a new fragrance… occasionally there would be repeat purchases.. like Calyx which was a summer staple for several years.

  8. Ha! What a great story about the warehouse guy finally (!) remarking upon how gorgeous you smell. I think my longest rotation was a few weeks, some years ago, when I just bought Heure Exquise. When I just fell in love with Vero it was just Vero for at least a fortnight or more. In very hot weather I rotate Cristalle Eau Verte or Eau du Sud for days on end, depending on the weather. Summer rotation so far this year has been Unter den Linden, Liquid Dreams, Pruple Reign, Mito, Lustre and Eau du Sud/Cristalle EV.

    • You know, I wore the Vero’s 90 percent of the time for more than a year. There was a time when I thought I didn’t need anything else. Its different now, but they still feature regularly year round. Yes, Imagine if I had not had the iris Silver Mist to layer huh? 😉 I looooooove it. xxxxx

  9. Hi Val! I’m not exactly keen on wearing the same perfume for a few days in a row but it does happen, usually when I’m considering buying one. That’s when I don’t stop until the little sucker (aka a sample) has run dry 🙂 It also happens when I’ve blind-bought something, and it turns out to be something truly beautiful, like, e.g., Iris Silver Mist.

    • ISM. Glorious. I cannot was it for cooler weather again. I doubt that many of us wear perfume for more than two days in a row tbh. Bought anything nice lately Diana??? 😉

      • I bought two Patous from their Collection Heritage in June (Deux Amours & l’Heure Attendue), they’ve got this vintage feel. Can’t wait to try the rest of the collection! Oh, and a vintage bottle of Chanel no.5 edc arrives tomorrow 🙂

        • I would loooove a bottle of Chanel N°5 EdC but way to scared to even think about looking to buy one. Enjoy every drop. I should look at these Patous. I only just tried Joy for the first time, some vintage from my boss in Australia! xxxx

  10. My heavy rotation would definitely be more than twice a month. Too many options including sampling days. I probably need to edit my collection so that anything that hasn’t been worn in, say, two years needs to go – unless of course it’s somethIng REALLY special. Who things I will have any success getting rid of anything??😂

  11. I’ve probably worn Chanel Paris -Venise three or four, maybe even five, days in a row lately. It’s my “I’m too tired, too hot, and bothered to think of what to put on” scent. Do you layer it with ISM in equal number of sprays? On the same body parts or separately? I’m curious, because I find ISM too much for the summer heat we have here in California.
    Other frequent scents this summer have been a vintage bottle of L’Artisan The Pour Un Ete, Bulgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert and Hermes Un Jardin en Méditerrannée and Un Jardin sur le Nil.

    • Hi Tatiana! I spray a lot of Venise, but only one spray of ISM on top. And if I had the bell jar, which I will one day, then just one good dab. I have been wearing it in 30 degreeeplus heat, and it is perfect. However, definitely not an equal number of sprays, unless you have death wish. )IMO). On the same body parts, not separately. I would love to try the Bulgari, having only heard really good things about it, I must bother, But as I said above and I am sure in previous posts, ISM alone is for much cooler, cold, temperatures. xxxx

      • It’s almost 30 degrees out today and I just used 3 sprays of Venise with one of ISM on top. I get whiffs of each of them in turn but nothing I would identify as a combination of the two. Could be my nose or my body chemistry. Dear Daughter is coming by for dinner tonight. She usually says ISM smells like “old lady” on me. We’ll see what she says about this combo.

        • Maybe it is just not a good combo for you. Separate is just as great! What? ISM does not smell old lady, whatever that means. (OK I know what is meant by it but that needs to change. Lots of us older women are badass with our fabulous perfumes. That has to go. Hugs.

          • Yeah, I hate when she uses that term. Especially since she’s a perfumista, too. I used to wear ISM when we went out to be with our mare and she’d complain in the car. Ok, maybe it’s because I was a little heavy handed with application, because that horse loved ISM, Equistrius and No. 19. She would be all over me when I wore it. She’d sniff me up and down and nuzzle me and follow me without a lead like she was a trained puppy or something.
            I wore this combo Tuesday through Friday this past week, switching up how heavy my sprays were. On Friday I put on the ISM first then the Venise. I can’t tell you how much I love this combo now. Thanks for sharing this fragrant gem.

  12. A few things have been out to play thrice in recent months: Chris Rusak’s 33, Slumberhouse New Sibet, Dior Eau Fraiche, Jorum Trimerous, Jolie Madame, Papillon Bengale Rouge. Unheard of!

    There are even a few that I have even worn *two days in a row* this summer! (some of the Bogue Unfiltered set, St Clair Casablanca…)

  13. I only wear a perfume a few days in a row when I first buy it, but I wouldn’t call that “rotation”. I have perfumes for each season and I often wear a selection of perfumes for several weeks. Right now they are: E.Arden’s White Tea, The Different Company Sublime Balkiss, Fragonard’s Santal, 4711 Remix Cologne and Ambergreen. Obviously it’s very hot here.
    I love it that you love my favourite Malle’s: Eau de Magnolia and Le Perfum de Therese 🙂

    • Those are my two top favourite Malle`s. and they both are so beautiful in extreme heat. I don’t really wear them in the winter, (Yes, even above Dries, which I absolutely adore.) No, that does not really count as rotation, that is getting to know your scent! Mwah. xxxxx

  14. The answer depends on how much or little perfume somebody has at their disposal😏 I seldom wear the same perfume more than twice a month. Some are lucky to be worn twice a year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, too much perfume. I knowwww🤫

  15. I am going to try the Venise-ISM tomorrow! I go through phases with things for sure, depending on 1) the weather; 2) testing; 3) and my mood. Definitely been having a Lustre summer and also Dryad, of which I can’t get enough. And for some reason I wore Osmanthus Interdite two days in a row this week. It just hit the spot in the heat.

    • And? Did you like it? I cannot wait to wear the combo in winter. I have also worn a lot of Lustre. I need to retry Dryad, I had a spritz in England and don’t really remember tbh. I love all the different phases we go through regarding what and when we wear stuff. Great fun. xxxx

  16. My rotation is somewhat seasonal. I think for me heavy rotation is wearing once or twice per week.
    Coromandel in Parfum concentration! Coromandel is amongst my all-time favorite perfumes. I happen to be going to Dallas at the end of August and will be visiting the Chanel Boutique there. I hope they at least have the parfum for me to sample. I’ve had my heart set on getting Cuir de Russie this fall, but I could change my mind!

    • 29th of August is the launch date in Paris. Could be that it takes a while to get to other stores. I have absolutely no idea. Oh gosh, CdR or Coromandel? Probably CdR if you want it that badly, because Coromandel might not be good, I mean we hope ………Bussis. xxxxxx

  18. Just back from a three-week vacation, where I brought half a dozen samples/decants. L’Eau d’Hiver and AC Vanille Insensee got the most wear, the latter since it was soothing when I was dealing with various modes of transportation.

    • I need to dig out my L’Eau d’Hiver, and try it in the warmer weather. I will do that right now. It is good to have a soothing scent when traveling, gosh, a hardcore weird one could make you crazy, especially under and kind of stress! A three week vacation sounds like a dream. xxxxx

  19. High rotation is about 10 times a year, and often because they are more work appropriate. Every now and then I’ll love something and wear it the next day too. It’s very rare to go three days in a row.
    Another ISM lover here. I’ve not smelt Vanise yet.
    And Kiki. A very kind baker sent me some 🙂 , and I love it, it’s a happy perfume. Trayee makes me feel the same way. They’re just big smiles in a bottle.

    • Kiki is really happy, I agree with you, especially the EdP. I do wear Trayee but prefer it in the winter, the colder the better. Seriously though, an outside person would think we are nuts describing high rotation as ten times a year. Hahahahahaha. It is ridiculous actually. ISM – gorgeous. 🙂 xxxxxx

  20. Heavy rotation for me would mean twice a week for a month or so. My small collection is being rotated based on season, mood and activities (some perfumes just perform better in the heat, so mostly used on summer vacations abroad, and others mostly at the office).

    Given that I use many citrus scents, they just don’t last more than 5-6 hours before they are only a faint whisper, so I often wear something different in the afternoon or evening. I don’t feel a need to change the cozy scents every day necessarily.

    That Chanel Deauville bottle sounds like something I might like!

    • Hi Ingeborg, I bet you would love Deauville. I agree with your definition of heavy rotation. I also have a fairly small collection, and some are rotated according to season. I must say I cannot wait for the cooler weather to begin as I have more perfumes I like to wear in the colder months, And I am sick of this heat. But the farmer it is the better our business funds (the bikes) so …… Excuse late reply btw. Hugs, Val xxxxx
