Hey there dear APJ! How are you all doing?

Summer vacation is over and even though I am ready for my son to head back to school, I will miss spending the days with him. He is entering fifth grade! Where does the time go?

Tapping my Inner Beast – d’ambiguité, L’animal sauvage and Poudrextase by Marlou

As a little treat to myself, I purchased samples of Marlou’s perfume in hopes of awakening my senses or shall we say tapping my inner beast. Life and motherhood has taken over my life and I somehow feel that I have forgotten who I am and what I want to do in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life, but sometimes I just want to roar, and pursue what I believe is best for me. I mean throwing paint onto a canvas, dropping all of the daily chores, finding time and energy to explore my existence. This also means finding perfumes that do awaken deep emotions and wearing perfume for myself and not having to worry about what others standing close to me might think or that they may walk away!

I kept reading Marlou’s website and if you have not done so already, do yourself a favor and check it out. I do not know about you, but I really enjoyed reading the introduction to the brand.

How could I not be curious when I read

“We work with notes described as animal. In their proximity to the natural odours of the skin, these beckon towards an intimacy, a primal bond with oneself and with others.”

The site goes on to state

“We also take pleasure in imagining new functions for perfume; identity affirmation, erotic pursuit, suffusion of objects, talisman, store of reminiscences. Our aim is to stir the senses, to wake emotions.”

d’ambiguité

d’ambiguité – notes are pink peppercorn, cumin, incense, ylang, dune plants, castoreum, and costus

d’ambiguité means ambiguity and I was not quite sure what to expect with the name. As soon as I opened the sample I knew I was in for a ride. d’ambiguité opens with a lot of cumin and a little bit of incense. Normally, a cumin note adds to my curiosity. This did not disappoint. It is pure, intense animal in a bottle. I love the dirty sweaty smell and thoroughly enjoyed wearing it. I wish I could pull it off and maybe a bottle will be in my future so I can feel young and alive all the time.

L’animal sauvage

L’animal sauvage – notes are orange blossom, violet, sandalwood, patchouli, civet and musk

L’animal sauvage actually made me nervous. I thought that it would be ultra skanky and quite frankly unwearable. To be honest this is a musk perfume through and through and yes, it does have a bit of a growl. I am anosmic to many musks and then there is the whole category of clean, laundry type musks. The perfume is none of these. L’animal sauvage is animalic and yet warm, enveloping and sensual. It is almost textural in nature, reminding me of cashmere and silk caressing my skin. It purrs on my skin for hours and melds together with my natural scent. I love having to lean in to smell this. Thankfully it is not a loud and skanky perfume at all.

Poudrextase

Poudrextase – notes are rice powder, dried rose, cypress, civet and musks

Poudrextase had me at the name alone due to my powder obsession at the moment. I went in not knowing Marlou perfumes and expecting a powder bomb in the likes of Teint de Neige. I could not have been more incorrect! The opening is a slightly citrusy rice powder, the citrus possibly coming from the early stages of the dried rose. Poudrextase has a delightful dried rose note. Have you ever smelled small dried rose buds? They are sometimes put in whole into teas. The dried rose buds that I buy are a faded pink and about the size of my pinky fingernail. They impart a true rose flavor into my tea or water without being artificial. This is Poudrextase, dried pink rose buds dusted in a fine coating of rice powder. Just as I think that I have experienced all there is to Poudrextase, the perfume veers off with the musks making it a sensual perfume. I love it, especially for the slight growl in the drydown. This is a soft scent but with many hours of simple joy wearing it.

Do you have an inner beast? Do you like musk perfumes? Or perfumes listed as animalic? Have you tried any of the Marlou perfumes? I must admit that I am having a difficult time just choosing one perfume to buy!

The pictures are not quite wild or beastly, but they are a window into my activities at the start of August. Wishing you all a wonderful month.

Oodles of fragrant kisses,

Sandra xoxo

  1. I like a bit of skank: Papillon Salomé, Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan, MFK Absolue pour le Soir. Haven’t tried the Marlous but they do sound appealing.

  2. I have never tried this brand, Sandra!
I like to wear animalics in the summer when my skin picks up virtually no skank but rather sweetness. Flux de Fleur which I recently discovered thanks to Kathleen smells like a warm musky coconut in the drydown and I love it. Salome and Absolut Pour Le Soir are two others that come to mind as well as one from Auphorie – name escapes me at the moment- considered animalic, and I really enjoy all of them in the heat based on how my skin reacts.

    • Hi Brigitte, If you like animalics, definitely give Marlou a try. One of them may sing to you. I love the sound of Flux de Fleur. Perhaps your reaction to animalic perfumes in the heat is why I enjoyed them so much this summer. It has been hot here.

  3. Great piece. I have tried them all. L’Animal Sauvage was one of my perfumes of 2017. I love it and have a bottle and still wear it. I have my trainer some, it is pretty spectacular on a bloke I must say.
D’Ambiguité was good, in a dead Welsh sheep in the mountains kind of way. Would prefer not to wear it.
I nearly ordered Poudrextase on the spot, in fact I did, and then cancelled it. The opening is exquisitely beautiful., but something deep into the drydown bothered me. And now, damn it I cannot find my sample.
But I/we are way picky. These are three fantastic, sexy, quite erotic perfumes, dead sheep’n’all. xxxx

    • Thanks Val. I can just imagine you rocking L’animal sauvage! Poudrextase is in the running with L’animal sauvage. They are both so very different and that is what makes this house so appealing. Hope you find that sample. It really is worth it.

  4. The only Marlou I have sniffed is L’animal Sauvage. I loved my sample instantly and deeply and quickly ordered a bottle from Luckyscent. As I was excitedly opening the package, and lifting the perfume bottle out of the box to spray, my Boxer puppy came running/flying at me full speed to snach the box out of my hands. It was like one of those slow-motion movie scenes as the bottle went flying into the air and landed crashing into a million pieces on my tile floor. My house smelled fabulous that evening! I have always meant to order another bottle and haven’t yet. It is a beautiful perfume and I really need to get more. Thanks for the reminder Sandra!
