Gucci Mémoire d’Une Odeur by Alberto Morillas 2019

Well hello there everyone!

It is an extremely rare thing for me to go to a store and ask for a sample of a fragrance, and even rarer that I write about something that I do not own.  And yet here I am.   It was the chamomile note that intrigued me.  I am no chamomile in perfume expert, but several years ago Vero gave me an old Hermés parfum with chamomile in it, and it gives a most exquisite scent.  This knowledge allowed me to recognize the chamomile clearly in the Gucci.

Gucci Mémoire d’Une Odeur by Alberto Morillas 2019.

Notes include chamomile, some jasmine note exclusive to Gucci, musks, vanilla, sandalwood and cedar wood.    The gorgeous green flaçon was inspired by a Gucci perfume from the 90s.  It sprays beautifully.

Although there are other perfumes with chamomile in them, it’s not a note generally found in your mainstream-aimed-at-the-general-population perfumes.   And it is this edginess/nicheness that will make it appealing to the discerning perfumista.

IMG_0561.JPG

It opens with sharp, aromatic, green and herbal chamomile. There is perhaps a bitterness to it.  Quite cutting edge for a mainstream scent.  As it settles down and moves into the heart it becomes more floral, perhaps a little honeyed.  The base is warm and heady with musks and sandalwood.    The translucent chamomile remains throughout.

If you are sick of searching out niche perfumes, ordering samples from f*** knows where, only to find that they are well, let’s say not all that you hoped they would be, then  give this Gucci a try.  You can get it everywhere, 40ml, 60ml, 100ml, 30ml rollerball.  Prices starting from around 55 Euros. It is a damn good perfume.

I drink chamomile tea every night before I go to bed.  Sweetened with honey.  The habitual making of it already signals to my brain that it is time to switch off and relax.  And I have such a hard time finding laudanum these days you know?

Any chamomile lovers out there?

Above photos from the Gucci website and Unsplash.   The horse chestnut tree is one near my in-laws that I have been photographing for a couple of years.  I was looking for some chamomile by it but it is too late in the season.

  1. I love drinking chamomile tea. Favorite comes from a local Guatamalan restaurant and shop that sells a honey flavored one.
Val, I need to retest this fragrance! I tried it yesterday at Sephora’s and needed twenty sprays to smell what my nose said was celery but then after five minutes it was gone. I have used blue chamomile essential oil in my own blends and it’s quite pungent and strong. I think my skin will need an unscented carrier oil on the base in order for this fragrance to last. I will ask for a free sample and experiment at home. Great review 👍👌

    • I dunno if it is worth all of that action Brigitte. I just cannot imagine how twenty sprays of anything wouldn’t last until Christmas. Yeah, chamomile is quite pungent. I used to put a few drops into a cup of milk, and then chuck it into my bath water. Was so relaxing. Who can really be bothered with an unseated carrier oil? I have drunk chamomile for years, but only at night. Doesn’t seem right during the day. Hugs. xxxxx

  2. I don’t like chamomile tea as you well know, haha, though I once lived with a lecturer who washed her hair in it every day. It was jolly shiny, let me tell you. And how I laughed at “And I have such a hard time finding laudanum these days you know?” Made me think of Le Labo’s Labdanum 18, which I own. That’s a different ‘-danum’ I take it? Or I’d get it out pronto…

    • What is it with British people and getting them to drink herbal teas huh? It is so delicious with honey, and the perfect bedtime drink. You can count yourself lucky that I don’t live near you because you would be drinking it at night, trust me. Labdanum is the one LL that I think I would like to own. Each time I get the chance to try it I love it. The only problem, (one which Brigitte above does not have!) is that the stuff lasts more than 24 hours on me. Nevertheless, one day I will go for the 10 ml bottle that they do. (Or is it 15ml?) Bussis. xxxx

  3. I’ll certainly give this a good spritz when I see it. Chamomile in perfumery is an unknown quantity to me. Gorgeous bottle. Gucci hasn’t been so bad with mainstream offerings in the last couple of years imho.

  4. I drink chamomile tea last thing at night and first thing in the morning. I love the smell and am dying to try this perfume. It sounds like an antidote to all the sweet fruity florals that designer houses are still churning out.

    • Hi Mary! Oh no, I have to have a builders`brew in the morning, with sugar. Couldn’t manage chamomile in the morning although it would probably make me shake less. 😉 Yeah, the nice thing about this Gucci is everyone can try it, because it is everywhere. That is so refreshing. Nothing to lose, no costs involved. Perfect . xxxxx

  5. How cool that Gucci released a mainstream fragrance with a chamomile top note when most front-load their perfumes with caramel and/or fruit. I’m going to try it just for that (plus the green bottle and box). I’m fond of the essential oil but couldn’t drink it in tea. That’s a nice night-time ritual you have.
The laudanum quip is excellent 😀

    • Yeah you need to try it Tara. And as I said above, it is everywhere so no stress. I got the lady in the store down the road to fill me a sample. Totally convenient, She took great joy in telling me that is is gender neutral and can therefore be worn my anyone. I’m like really? A guy can wear this? No shit Sherlock. Hahahahahaha. She is the nicest SA ever and I will keep it that way of course. I may or may not have had a couple of bottles of laudanum in my distant past. And it might have been the best drug ever without any shadow of a doubt. We’ll never know. 🙂

  6. Hey Val,
It’s wonderful that GUCCI are finding their frag mojo again. I will definitely search this baby out. Chamomile tea being a favourite and the green Eau de Gucci bottle all make it a winner in my books already.
    Love the tree pic.

  7. THAT Tara is exactly it. We all have so much other stuff, that even if we do like it, we are unlikely to reach for something like this, despite it being good. I would hope though that their target customers enjoy something a little bit out of their normal zone, and see that there is a variety of stuff to chose from. Oh yes, the bottle really is gorgeous. and it gives exactly the right vibe to the scent. xxxx

  8. I like the scent of chamomile tea but not the flavor. I need to walk to my local Sephora and sniff this one. The reviews on the Sephora website are all over the place, which makes me even more curious about it.

  9. Hi Val! I love chamomile tea, alternate it with lindenblossom as bedtime tea. With honey, my SIL keeps bees and produces the most gorgeous honey, almost too good to use it in tea but yeah. I just received a few jars of 2019 summer honey. Mmmm. I love it as a note in perfume, I have a d’Orsay linden scent which is more chamomile than linden to my nose, but I like the whole meadowy hay vibe of it. So I am going to give this a sniff one of these days! Hope you are well, the tree is just great. ps latest (good) buy: travel spray of Therese on the Dutch ebay equivalent. Wow.

    • Linden tea is also good, yep. Gorgeous honey has me salivating ….. I just emptied a travel Therese, and have about 5mls in my last one. I am going to try the current version in Vienna next time I am there (soon, because I wanna try the Coromandel Parfum) and try not to be over judgmental. Perhaps it is lovely too. Stay tuned! Nice to hear from you. xxxxxx

        • No. Misunderstanding. I was not very clear. . I do not have the earlier version. Sadly. I have a numbered one of the 1000. It’s beautiful. And even if the original, which I will never get to try is “better”? 🤷🏼‍♀️

          • thanks for the response. Guy Robert created the original so I thought he might have given original formula to Vero which she then passed on to you. You must be treasuring your Doblis since the bottle is already half gone 😦

  10. Hi Val, I think I’m gonna fall in love with this perfume.
Chamomile teas people in my country drink only if they’re sick and have stomach problems, so it reminds me of the worst. On the other hand, I love the smell of chamomile. Would you consider it to be a perfume for warmer or colder weather? I’ve read a review which says the longevity is really poor. What do you think?

  11. I have skin like glue. So am not a good person to ask. Maybe better in cooler weather but don’t think it really matters too much. Just give yourself some hefty sprays and see what happens. 😊 And let me know. Since it is everywhere, nothing to lose. Go for it. ❤️

  12. Can’t drink chamomile tea, but love the smell. The Lush “smell of weather turning” was my favourite for years, but Jorum’s Carduus is a strong challenger to the chamomile crown.

    • I am so stoked to try the Jorum´s. Cannot wait. Chamomile seems to be very divisive. But it is so calming ……. unless it makes you wanna hurl I guess. See you soon!! xxxx

  13. Will definitely seek this out as something different, and of course to see that bottle.
How lucky are those who can pop out and get a free sample. In my experience in department stores in Australia, SAs would rather give their eye teeth than hand samples. I have never understood this and I never will. And I still think this is how so many manufacturer’s samples end up for sale online.

    • That is absolutely ridiculous. Can you not just walk in and demand one? Or take your own atomizer and get them to put some in? No one can expect you to purchase something without having sampled it first.
I am sure thought that you will get a chance to try it somewhere. If they have it my cowtown ….. xxx

      • It’s the same in NYC. They do NOT want to hand out samples. Usually they want to spray you right there and won’t even let you hold the bottle. And you know I need more than one spray!!! Or they completely ignore you….Le Labo….five times now.

        • I posted up thread that I’d had a spray today and the SA gave me a sample. I couldn’t believe my luck. They usually hoard the samples.

  14. From the instant I read the reviews, I knew this was one I would love so I ran out and blind bought it and was not disappointed. Yes, the longevity is extremely poor, but it is so far from the madding crowd of today’s designer fragrance offerings. It is a unique item in my scent lineup. Wearing it today on a hot day.

    • Hi there otamom! Nice you took the time to comment. I am so glad you like the perfume, it should not matter, but it does. 🙂 It really does have the edge over so many odf the designer scents huh? I have heard from people that the longevity is poor, although that was not my experience. But nothing to stop reapplication or just enjoying the short ride, as long as you enjoy it. Enjoy! xxx

  15. I love chamomile tea before bed and was able to try this right before coming back to Chile. I loved it so now im wondering if it will make it this far so I can get my paws on it. I believe Avignon also has a chamomile note?

    • I would imagine that Gucci is everywhere? Although I have no idea how things work in South America to be honest. I do not know about the Avignon, but will take a look. Glad someone else drinks the tea before bed! Thanks for dropping in Mariann. xxx

  16. I really like the bottle design and the printed ads. Since I don’t like chamomile tea at all, I guess I should get to a shop and sniff it before making up my mind!
