Hello Fellow Fumies,
At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.
Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
Last Weeks Winner: PerfumeLover67

Saturday Question: What Is Your Warm Weather Vanilla Fragrance?
Vanilla! It’s one of my favourite notes in perfumery. It goes with almost everything and smells great on most of us. From amber like L’Artisan L’Eau d’Ambre to bakery like Guerlain Oriental Brulant, thick and ropey like Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights to the salty aquatic fun of Vanille Marine by Micallef (also excellent in summer).
Here’s my problem. Though I love vanilla as a note in fragrance, most of my ambers get too warm and cozy in summer.
I know they can all be worn in summer but what I really want to know are the ones YOU wear in the warmer months that are vanilla-centric? What have you, in the Northern Hemisphere especially, been wearing in the summer of 2019?
My Answer:
Whenever I really want a hit of hot weather vanilla the sheer and weightless oddity that is Hermès Vanille Galante is my favourite pick. I’m happily on my second 15ml Travel of it, and nearly through it. Though I can’t imagine going through 100ml it is a staple in my summer travel arsenal. Hefty enough to keep me interested, light enough to not sweat and suffocate. Really, it’s mainly lily but the vanilla is there.

I wear Montale Blue Amber all year round, I also like Sideris because the vanilla/benzoin is quite cool. Must replace my little bottle.

I finished my large decant of it this summer. I definitely need to get a full bottle for the next one.

Oh yes! Definitely get a bottle. Don’t wait. (I’m sensing an enabler pin headed my way!)

Oh absolutely! I came in to leave this is my go-to summer vanilla. I am halfway through my second bottle of Eau Duelle and I think it will become a permanent staple. On a trip to a Diptyque shop in San Francisco one winter, my fragrance bestie bought me a bottle of this and I thought it was a winter perfume until…I kept reaching for it in the summer and fall! (I don’t wear it in the spring.) The tiny image on the bottle shows a sultry summer in the gardens of the Taj Mahal. It was *meant* to be worn in the heat!

Wow! Sold! Next time I am in Grand Central Terminal I am getting my nose on this one! Sounds like a year round no brainier great fragrance! Maybe a full bottle in MY future.
And welcome, Mary!!! Always great to see a new face!

Dang it but I can’t think of a vanilla centered hot-weather scent🤔 Any that I have are more suited to cooler weather. I’ll have to ponder on this one.

I’m back. AG Vanille Exquise, a rather ethereal take on vanilla, and Tauerville Vanilla Flash, flirtatious and fun.

Shalimar Extrait. Lots. Hate it in winter.

Wow! I love it in all seasons. Funny that you dislike it in winter as I’m assuming that would be the season most people would choose for it. I used to wear copious amounts all throughout high school, autumn, winter and spring, in the 70’s. And 70’s Shalimar perfume was quite the bomb! I still adore it.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I like it on skin alone. And not touching my clothes. And it is so gorgeous in the heat.
LikeLiked by 1 person
“not touching clothes” 😂 That’s a very particular exception.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I dislike ALL perfume on clothing. But it cannot be avoided in the winter. So I suck it up. But some scents I like just on skin and in the open. Shalimar is one of them.
Cuir de Russie for example is fine if it gets onto my clothes. But I always put perfume on before getting my upper body dressed. (But with my shoes on). Hmmmm. Maybe sounds odd. But works fine in reality. 😀

I don’t spray on my clothes either, always before I get dressed but I don’t mind it transferring onto clothing. And I’m usually barefoot 😏

I actually have an easy answer to this: Berdoues’ Vanira Moorea. It is a citrusy, floral vanilla that isn’t very sweet. Very summery!

Ooo! I forgot about that one!! Yes, it’s perfect for summer.

My thunder has been stolen. Like pl67 I’m voting for Eau Duelle. Cookie Queen mentioned Shalimar which I also wore a lot this summer, but I don’t necessarily classify it as a vanilla. Either way, both of them wear superbly in summer. Which sadly is now a distant memory here. But local strawberries are still available, so there’s that!

Nearest I have to a vanilla I wear. I do have Vanilla Hinoki from AromaM too- also good in the summer. It has a Shalimar vibe too ….

Positively balmy here this evening. 19 whole degrees at 6.30 as I was in my way to work, and there’s a strange yellowish thing in the sky. I’m stumped.

I cannot name a single vanilla which would be good in warm weather, but then I don’t own many perfumes with vanilla as a main note. Too much vanilla usually feels suffocating. In my book vanilla pairs best with spice and amber.

I like Vanille Insensée for the summer, as it doesn’t have the “cupcake out of the oven” sense of warmth…

Forgot that one! I agree. In many regards I think VI wears about the same as Eau Duelle. Very nice in the warmer months.

Good morning all. And I have finally thought of something!!!!!! Although I do enjoy it mostly in Winter, and at night as a ‘comfort’, it still ‘sings on my skin’ in warmer weather, too. Jessica Simpsons, Fancy. I also concur with an earlier post, re Fancy Nights.

This is a difficult question for me because I am not really a huge fan of vanilla note, especially when it dominates such as in SDV though I think Shalimar parfum is amazing. it is even more difficult to choose a vanilla fragrance for warm weather but if I have to go for one, I would go for Givenchy Pi which I like a lot. Years ago it felt too sweet to me but now the bar for sweet has been set so high that Pi actually appears easier on the nose than many too sweet gourmands. I also have a certain fondness for Pi because I still remember thinking in the late 1990s that Givenchy Pi’s astronaut ad was one of the coolest. Since then my interest in space has grown multiple-folds so I love the original pi ad even more.

Years ago, I segregated my fragrances into seasonal categories, just like I do with my wardrobe. For me, vanilla note dominant scents are in the winter category, and I just cannot imagine myself wearing them in any other season. I do very much love vanilla as a note, both sweet and dry.
