Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 23.9 – 29.9.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. I shelled out for a blind buy because I had to have it and am loving it: Twilly Eau Poivree! I am not a big Hermes fan since they never last, but I fell for Twilly and think I may love this one even more.

  2. I’m wearing layers of Shalimar today. 60’s vintage EDC sprayed and 80’s vintage perfume dabbed (drizzled and dribbled, actually). I am another year more vintaged? vintage-y? as well. Presumably I am also considerably wiser 🤔. The beautiful business of summer is over and the geese are in a hurry to get out of dodge. Maybe they have some wisdom to impart? Mr. LH is definitely a wise one. A beautifully wrapped bottle (I’m certain he had one of the girls do this. If it had been his handiwork I would have heard all the power tools being called into action. Yes. You can indeed cut wrapping paper with a bench saw) of Salome was on my bedside table this morning. Downstairs in the kitchen all sorts of yummies. Almond croissants, pain au chocolate, cappuccino and espresso from the patisserie around the corner. And yes. I had one of everything! I’m wired on sugar and caffeine and happier for it. Woo hoo! Let’s get this day started.

  3. On Matty’s topic of joyful rediscoveries I’m currently finishing up my TRIVIA Q&A and spritzed Atelier Cologne – Café Tuberosa. I love this so much, wore the heck out of it last year in springtime paris. Now it’s a good reminder fragrance. the 10ml is over half gone.

  4. Closed up shop early for bday celebration Part Deux. Dinner out with Mr. LH and some friends. No doubt an evening filled with nonsensical fun.
Of course, I will wear Salome tonight.
Part Three of bday celebrations take place Sunday…….stay tuned 😉

      • It’s a bit of a surprise for me. I was expecting a musky animalic. On me it reads very sweet…almost like a cola vibe. Then a bit of tobacco…I have no idea of what the notes are…this is just what my nose smells. The drydown is definitely an oriental. But the onset reads like a gourmand to me.

  5. Heading out to lunch soon I am feeling tired and stressed. My back is really feeling my tension!!! I am not really in the mood for being social however this event was booked a few weeks ago so can’t pull out. I have found a decant of 31 Rue Cambon which I hope will smell ok on me.

  6. Last drop of original Victoria Secret’s Victoria.
So elegant and feminine, takes me way back to the early 90s. Why did they discount this fragrance?

  8. After Shalimar-ing and Salome-ing myself silly yesterday I opted for Pour Un Gimme. Simplicity is the word for today. Foodie tip: next time you’re at a top notch Italian restaurant try burrata cheese. I had an appetizer of vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes smothered with burrata cheese that was TDF! Kid you not. It was so rich I could hear my arteries slamming shut. Worth every bite 😋

  9. Smelling pretty in Hermes Twilly. Love it!
The day promises to be a very ugly one at work. I really need tons of positive vibes and many deep breaths. Hope to survive!

  10. So when I got to work I accidentally sprayed myself with Reem Acra. This beauty sells for 17$ for 100 ml at fragrancenet. Thanks to Kathleen I am now sampling a whole bunch of older mainstream goodies and finding that they are as good as it even better than some current Uber expensive niche offerings. Which is wonderful for any perfumista on a shoestring budget.

    • Silly question here, but how does one ‘accidentally’ spray a perfume? I mean you have to pick up the bottle, remove the cap, aim the nozzle and press with your finger. So far, so good. So, in what universe does this happen by accident? In the wonderful world of Marzipan 🤔

      • There’s a perfume?????? I have and love (!) the shower gel. Is this a solid perfume (which would be a pass for me)? Or one of the Lush body spray things in the Windex-like bottle? Hopefully it’s a normal, non-gimmicky perfume. Do tell!

        Like

        • I received the decant from Brigitte, and asked her more about it, response pending. I also thought there was only a body spray in that winded-type bottle which I didn’t ever look at.
This smells so good! I’ll keep you posted what I find out.

            • So…here’s the story…pl67 sent the decant to eldest mini Marzipan…she used quite a bit of it and then it came home…she gave permission to pass on to Kathleen….and the decants go round and round and round….pl67 would know what exactly it is but I am thinking it is the body spray.

              • I have a feeling you are right. I see mostly body sprays by Lush. I have the Twilight? Sleepy? Whatever it’s called. I always feel like an adolescent boy using his Axe body spray when I spritz it.

                Like

                • Not to mention, where exactly are you supposed to spray it??? ‘Body’ is quite a large area. Am I meant to spray my feet? Thighs? Chest only? Buttocks? It’s so puzzling that I rarely use it. Too many decisions 🤔

                  Like

                  • yup…spray every part of your body. I do when I want longevity and projection. I also do this with splashes. The La Fille de Berlin you gave me which I doctored up with marzipan I now have to splash because the sprayer got clogged with the vanilla beans (same with your Marcella blend- too much vanilla and you can no longer spray). So I splash that LFdB on my arms, legs and chest. To be honest, it smells like a delicious almondy, jammy, cherry rose.

                    Like

      • As Brigitte already mentioned, the Rose Jam is the body spray that comes in the “Windex” bottle. It is stronger and more long lasting that any regular perfume. Really good!

  13. Testing the new St Clair Scents Eve on one hand and Pandora on the other……holy crap!!! They are both so good!!! So complex, so natural smelling and so potent even for my scent devouring skin…do I want both in full bottles? you betcha!

  14. Went without scent during the day, then tested Dior New Look 1947 this evening. Really nice, but not something I really need. Very similar in style to something from Chanel, classic, understated and polished all the way.

A small sample order from StC finally arrived this week, so I have also tested Van Cleef and Arpels Bois d’Iris which is more about modern woods than iris, sadly. Also, projection and lasting power very average. Another one I would happily use, but not buy at full price.

The perfume which really is special, is Hiram Green Slowdive. Oh my, lasted for 10 hours on my skin, very intense the first three or four hours. It is like pure, very floral summer honey mixed with a little orange blossom. This experience really makes me want to try some of his greener scents! While Slowdive is lovely, I’m not sure I would find many occasions to wear it. It is so intense that it might ruin a wine tasting.

    Like

    • Those VCA’s do not perform well on my skin either. I love Slowdive. I agree with you that it would not be one to choose when attending a wine tasting. But for an autumn stroll in the countryside….divine!

      Like

      • Sadly I’m still not up for long strolls in the crisp autumn weather! Just made it around the block last week, needed a haircut, a new black jacket/blazer for work and new jeans. I have to get hold of a sample of Arbolé Arbolé little by little, to see if it fits me even better than Slowdive.

          • No need to be sorry, I got what you are saying, some perfumes are even better outdoors than inside.

There’s this expectation in our culture to go for a long walk or a real hike every Sunday as a minimum, so people have started asking when I’ll be that mobile again and I cannot answer.

            Like

            • Was your surgery considered successful? Is there an expectation that you will be able to walk reasonably well someday? Is this a matter of continued physiotherapy and work on your part until your ankle can function normally? I guess what I’m getting at is do you have a reasonable hope that with time and progress you will be able to enjoy walking again?

              Like

              • Well, so far the ankle seems fine, but strength is lacking in the whole body, especially around the knees. The hope is that I can get rid of crouches, as a minimum indoors. I’m now finally having my physio put together an application for further rehabilitation, since progress is too slow with exercise three times a week, which is all I find energy for when I’m at home. Going away somewhere would mean at least 4x 45 minutes each day and most places have a heated pool, too.

We will see, cannot give up yet, since last time with surgery it took in reality 18 months before we saw the final result. I’m noticing improvement (getting faster/higher average watt) when using the rower, but walking is still heavy work. People coming up to me to ask if I’m fine once I go outside is a true nuisance, not helpful at all except during the season we won’t name yet!

Sorry, too long answer perhaps! You can see why I need perfume to fortify me and divert me.

  15. Long post alert! 🚨 I’m a little late to the party here but my scented week so far has been – Memo French Leather ( delightful, soft rose suede), L’Art Voleur de Roses, L’Art Al Oudh (love this one) and today my LeLabo body oil and Santal 33. I’m on bit of a high – my sister has has had some mental health issues and over the last two years has worked hard to find herself, and her place here in this world. It’s been tough for her as a single mum and heart breaking for me as her big sister. We try to call each other weekly just to check in and chat for a bit. Last night she finished her call to me saying ‘love you’. It’s something I always say to my nieces and nephews. I’m crying happy tears xx. Hope it’s a good day for all my fragrant friends here 😘. Sorry for long post.

    • Eyebrow maintenance is good in my book. Much preferred to sitting in the hairdressers chair for a couple of hours. Eyebrows means lying down and daydreaming – well it does as far as I’m concerned😃 And coffee and goodies too, a thorough spoiling yourself week. Also good in my book.

      Like

      • Oh yes! Eyebrows are infinitely better than hair. Ever try putting on your eyeglasses with 7,000 foil strips on your head? They either go on cockamamie crooked or get stuck in foil and dangle in front of your face.

          Like

          • No change of colour for me. My own hair is a medium blond, so highlights are a twice a year thing. I will admit to resenting the time they take. However, the chairs are comfy and Richard and I gossip and snipe at each other like two old cronies.

I must say the polished eyebrows make my face look much much better. The woman also waxed my upper lip-LOL!

  18. I tried one more of my new samples, a classic which I haven’t seen on sale locally: Guerlain Eau de Cologne du Coq. I admit I really like it, classic, not leaning masculine (to my nose) and like a royal Eau de Cologne compared to the German classic 4711 (which I also like, but 4711 sells for a ridiculous price here for what it is)

    Like

      • Not very expensive, but it lasts for under an hour , so 21 USD for 60 ml or around 32 USD for a 150 ml splash bottle is no bargain compared to different eau fraiche scents like EA Green tea.

        Like

        • have you tried any of those limited edition ones? there are two new ones coming out…Cotton & Almond and Pomegranate & Eucalyptus…they are supposed to be winter scents and they sound really good. Also there was a 4711 Lilac released not long ago that piqued my interest. I think many of these 4711s are only available in Europe.

          Like

          • Douglas Nordic (a franchise, I think) went bust and after that only the classic 4711 cologne seems to be available here. Douglas had several flankers of 4711 and at a better price. I only tried a shower gel, something like blood orange and thyme. I guess it would be something to look for if I finally get to travel to visit German friends again.

  19. I did some testing last night of two mystery samples …..one smells of oranges the other of anise.

Right now I am testing a blend I made last night with my homemade vanilla bean oil, sandalwood, bergamot and the orris butter pl67 gifted me. Thus far I really like it but it will change dramatically over time as the oils blend.

Today I will go with another wearing of Eve on one wrist and Pandora on the other.

Tonight La Pausa EDP (thank you, Kathleen!)

I have thunked a few samples over the past few days, including Tom Ford Velvet Orchid, Guerlain SDV and Memo Italian Leather. The latter 2 are bottle worthy. I work until midnight tonight with Mr. Grumpy. I have only a small collection of samples atm. Today’s choice is quite pretty. Boucheron Quatre En Rose.

The SA heard us and came over and said it was just a dummy bottle for display. Her tester bottle was actually empty. Two dummies went out the door laughing.

            • LOL, that is a funny story! I’m sorry you didn’t get to sample the perfume, I’m curious what perfumistas think of this one. Mainstream seems to be mixed reviews, and Allure magazine named it best new fragrance. I am on the fence. At first I loved it, then it reminded me of Miracle which I wore and loved years ago, then it felt a little too musky, then I really appreciated the rose.

              Like

              • Ooh, a ghost of Miracle? I wore this years back and loved it. It’s still a popular fragrance here, still stocked on shelves. I’ll have to go back to test Idole, hopefully the’ve got a new tester.

                Like

                • I could be all wrong if I sampled Miracle and Idole side by side, but Miracle is what came to mind when I sniffed Idole. I loved Miracle and went through a couple bottles in the early 2000s. I’d love to smell it again, I wonder if it’s changed. I’ll sniff when next at the department store, I think Nordstroms still has it.
