Saturday Question: What Is Your Closest Bottle To Empty?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)

Last Weeks Winner: Less than 100

Saturday Question: What Is Your Closest Bottle To Empty?

Because there is SO MUCH perfume here emptying a bottle is a HUGE deal for me. there have been a few bottle thunks this year: 30ml Lolita Lempicka EdP, 2 x 13ml Niki de Saint Phalle and a bunch of small fry. There are a few bottles rattling around with a few ml left: a few Miss Dior, Shalimar, Mitsouko 7.5ml vintage extraits, some Hermès 15ml travels, Montale Sandflowers 100ml has about 5ml left.

My Answer:

This 100ml Joy EdT by Jean Patou wins the award at the moment. Through use and gifting has now reached 5ml or less. It came to me nearly full from one of those incredible eBay bargains that I was the only bidder on over a decade ago. It was so cheap I thought it must be a fake and was stressing until it arrived. It smells fresh and perfectly in tact, deep and richly lustrous. Though it’s an EdT it smells as textured and intricate as the extrait but has infinitely more throw and diffusion. I use to drench myself in it but now that it’s so near the end I content myself with furtive swipes, often just for my own enjoyment on home days.

My Saturday Question to you is:

What Is Your Closest Bottle To Empty?

  1. I’m down to the last 5mls on a bottle of Angélique Noire that I’m going to try to finish off this month. Already have a backup bottle waiting in the wings.

  2. Mine is a bottle of Joy, too. Not because I wore it too much but because I knocked it out of the cabinet and it spilled all over the carpet!!!! I’d laugh if I wasn’t crying. 🙂

      • Ha, got impatient and dumped the last bit of Bas de Soie into the tub this morning – something to be said for SL’s screwtop bottles. Will probably wait until next spring to break out the back up bottle, which should be enough of a rest.

  3. My black beauty 50ml bottle of Costume national Scent Intense is down to 5ml at max :)) The good part is that i have other two 100ml bottles as backup 😁😁

  4. 1 ml of First Cut, 5ml of Victoria, 3 ml of Tracy Reese, 4ml of vintage Nocturnes, 2ml of Tocca Brigitte, 6ml of vintage Melograno, 2ml of Jo Malone French Lime Blossom ….lately I have been having a hard time thunking.

  5. I have some SSS travel sprays that are a little low but I don’t think anything else in my collection is less than 50%…. my lowest level is probably Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise- it was one of the first niche perfumes I bought so it was in heavy rotation early. I need to spray more heavily, obviously!

  6. I find it very hard to thunk full bottles, or even samples; I have just too much stuff. Without going through my entire collection, I have a 100ml bottle of YSL Jazz that’s maybe about 5% full. The thing is that, now it’s been discontinued (or just replaced by the La Collection version), I have the dilemma of whether to use it up or hang onto it as a vintage rarity. Probably the former, since I don’t have the original release.

    • I miss the plastic pump down bottle of Jazz, I went through at least 2 bottles of it before they changed. Now I’ve got a pretty modern one and though it’s not the same it does have enough of itself to give me memory smell.

  7. I dont have an exact answer because there is no perfume at the moment that I am trying to finish by spraying it away. In my case, the bottle closest to the finish line may be one of those guerlain bottles in the boxes that is gradually evaporating, maybe encens mythique or something like it even though it is original spray version and not bulb version. I did tape it to prevent further evaporation but not sure whether it will work.

  8. Shalimar edp is nearly finished, but only the 30 ml bottle so I need not self congratulate too much. There is a big bottle already as a back up. It seems we all have the backup disease, must be an epidemic.

  9. I’m working on finishing the L’Occitane/Pierre Hermé Grapefruit-Rhubarb edt. There’s somewhere between 5 and 10 ml left. I also try to finish Bulgari Mon Jasmin Noir, but there must be at least 10 ml left. Other than that there’s a small bottle of the original Daisy somewhere, I think I haven’t used it for 5-6 years, so unless I gift it to someone’s teenage girl soon, it won’t be emptied.

  10. Annick Goutal Eau du Sud has maybe 5 ml left, followed by Cristalle Eau Verte. Both hot weather spray with abandon scents! In winter they take a back seat.

      • It is such a great scent! Have you ever spritzed Eau Dynamisante (Clarins)? It has a similar sense but is very fleeting. What you might love is Eau Dynamisante Shower Mousse….Big kisses for the dogs and big hugs for you!

  11. My closest to empty is the Chanel No. 5 EDT I brought home from my late mother’s house, when we cleared it out to put on the market after she died. I don’t wear it, and I won’t empty it, I just like to take it out and smell it once in a while when I’m thinking of her. I think it’s the last bottle I gave her as a gift, and it only has a few mls left.

  12. I also find it very difficult to get low or thunk full bottles, my collection is too big to wear a perfume that often and I also don’t want the perfume to come to an end. I have several vintage perfumes from the 30s-40s that are very low due to evaporation pre-my ownership, not due to wear.

  13. I’m not in the habit of finishing anything: if I don’t love something, I do not wear it often enough to finish it; and if I do, I don’t want to wear it too often – so that it stays special every time I do 🙂
I think I have 3 bottles somewhat close to being done (and I still like and wear these perfumes) Jo Malone French Lime Blossom, Jo Malone Sweet Milk and Yosh Ginger Ciao. I have back-ups for all three – but still can’t bring myself to finishing those bottles.

    • Hi there Undina,
      How’s you’re Rusty?
There was a big sale on Yosh a while ago and I was going to buy Ginger Ciao but a whole bunch of bills came and my discretionary fund got wiped. It’s a bummer because I really like it. There’s a 5ml decant around here somewhere that I go rummaging for when I need a spritz.
One day I’ll see it again and pounce.

  14. Emporio Armani Diamonds, Givenchy Ange ou Demon and Roberto Cavalli Oro. They’d all have one wear left I think – just can’t bring myself to do it!

  15. I just noticed that I am getting down to the last few sprays of Hanae Mori Butterfly. I loved the run, but not sure it will be replaced. My time on this earth and closet space are both limited, and there are so many new things out there to try.
