Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 25.11 – 1.12.2019

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

    • The current formulation? I had four variations in samples which I gave to middle one as she adores Audrey Hepburn. I did try them first though and they are different with the current formulation completely a different animal 😼

      • It certainly is. I nearly grabbed them out of his hand in my haste to fling them in my bag ( how rude of me). But I didn’t, I smiled at him and thanked him profusley. He was a very nice young man

  1. Kathleen and I were recently discussing how different we are with our fragrance collection in that she hardly thinks whereas I am constantly thunking. She asked if we ever did a Saturday question on this subject. Have we, Portia? I said NO but I could be wrong. If we do in the future it was her brilliant idea 😂. I for one am curious as to everyone else’s answer. I for one have thunked maybe close to 400 bottles. My parents even more!!!

        • Monday morning here and now it is not only cold and wet , but the wind has joined the party!!! Last night one of the ladies I care for (85 not out) told me I smelt good . She had made the same comment a few weeks ago and again it was Soul I was wearing. For this morning I am wearing a body lotion All About Eve I found in my bathroom cupboard Later on today I will wear a scent.

    • You are smelling fabulous Brigitte! Valenino Donna was a surprisingly love for me after reading about it on a blog I had to try it. I think Matty would love it too because of her Guerlain L’Instant and Magic love.

  4. I am going to bed in a cloud of Theorema. Having so much trouble sleeping these days, and it did not become better after receiving news that my application for further intensive physical rehabilitation has been turned down. This leaves me with only the twice weekly sessions with my physiotherapist and I’ll be pretty much isolated at home during winter, I just don’t have the strength yet to handle the icy pavements in a safe way. Haven’t even walked 5000 steps each day, which does seem like a fair goal given my current limitations.

I did take advantage of the special offer from StC on Friday, so finally getting a decant of Equistrius (and a couple of other things), so looking forward to getting the small decant, have already had and thunked several samples. And now I really don’t have to take a second look at all the Black Week/Black Friday offers!

      • Yes, right? I have been invited to an event at a local shop selling dresses and interior design items, so I fear I may just spend some money there, so absolutely should avoid the net.

        • To my nose it isn’t very leathery, at least it’s not a lot of birch tar mimicking leather, like in so many scents.. I get a light green impression when wearing it. Perhaps others can chime in?

          • Thank you for the feedback Ingeborg. From Fragrantica reviews, I think it would be a love for me with the iris and violet. I don’t like leather/suede on me but if it’s not strong this is on my radar now to get a sample with next sample order.
Aren’t scented skin care products the best gift for girls? Nice treat for your cleaning lady and I’m sure she enjoyed the surprise.

  5. Nothing yesterday. I was up to my elbows mucking out an old fish tank and setting it up for re-purposing. Lots of vinegar, bleach, dirty water, scrubbing and so on, so I didn’t think it fair to ask a fragrance to compete with all that.

Today I applied some of my Floid Vigoroso After Shave This is an under-rated gem; soft, woody, spicy and powdery, and costs bugger-all.

      • It’s a stone-cold classic of the genre Brigitte. It’s a Spanish product and has been around since 1932. I first came across it on the Badger and Blade site, where it was the favourite of all the serious shaving nerds, so I thought it had to be worth a try, especially when I found out how cheap it is.

        • It sounds fantastic and something I would not be afraid to wear myself. I don’t shy away from masculine fragrances. Sometimes those old recipes from old houses that are tried and true really are amazing. We are often lured by the new and shiny that we forget old classics.

Rocher products and a scented hand cream from L’Occitane for her upcoming birthday and it seems she was happy with that scented surprise, so that’s nice.

  9. Areej de Dore Plumeria de Orris this morning. Thought I’d love it, but I don’t and it lasts and lasts and lasts. Finally, this evening I covered the remnants with Rogue Perfumery Chypre-Siam. I think he used the name Rogue because he ignores IFRA restrictions. Chypre-Siam has a ton of oakmoss in it. It’s very very good. From what I can gather, he uses his favorite vintage perfumes as inspiration for his creations.

    • I sampled all of the Rogue Perfumery fragrances and they were all very well done. I especially enjoyed the tuberose in Flos Mortis and Champs Lunaires, and I’m usually not a big tuberose fan. Yes, he ignores IFRA restrictions and uses vintages as inspiration. Very impressive perfumer in my mind.

    This morning,
Vintage Santa Maria Novella Melograno, how I love this! Beautiful vintage style powdery soapy floral. I am seriously considering a FB of the current formulation hoping it will be similar.

      • I am considering a blind buy of the current Melograno for my self-purchased Christmas gift from husband! I can’t imagine it will be beautiful as well. Perhaps not as beautiful as the vintage but if it resembles it I will be thrilled. The price of the current bottles are quite reasonable, looks like there is a shop in NYC from the website so no EU purchase needed.

                • They do have the cologne but you have to call the shop to place the order. Same with Luckyscent and same with SMN ship on Lafayette Street in Manhattan. I think I remember reading somewhere that the company is very restrictive with its distribution. Not being able to order it online may be part of that.

                  Like

                  • It is like that here. The niche shop selling SMN does not have it online, only in the actual shop. Seems to be like that with some other brands, too. Or at least exclusive lines, Armani Privé for example.

It’s hard to replicate ocean conditions in the home, especially when you are throwing medications into the mix, so you do lose some along the way, but it’s never nice when it happens. Still, I have my tanks where I want them now, they look 100% better and I can now streamline my maintenance process to make it a lot easier.

To get back on topic, I wore Jour d’Hermès. This is supposed to be a feminine scent but, in the hot weather, I think the grapefruit and white florals is very easy to wear, and entirely unisex.

    • Salt water fish tanks and fish are gorgeous! We had one many years ago, and I understand the amount of work involved with maintenance and taking care of all the fish and critters. We enjoyed it a lot, it was just difficult finding someone to take care of it when we traveled.

I bought myself 2 30 ml bottle bottles of Lou Lou for $30 each so Winter sorted for a few more years. I also grabbed a bottle of the latest EA Green Tea range named Pomegranate!!! Sadly there was only one bottle available but if I see anymore I will purchase . It is my long shift today so I am going to wear CN Soul

It smells sort of old-fashioned, but is a very good green scent with a mint note that sticks around, for a change. Cute bottle design, with a gear shifter include in the cap. Yet another discontinued gem, and very hard to find these days.

  14. This entire thread has me thinking about starting Xmas baking. I hope I have time this year 😬. I think I’ll make the marzipan this weekend. Maybe the dough for Linzer cookies. Yikes, it’s almost December 😳

    Like

    • What is this Christmas baking thing you speak of? Much as my mother tried to tutor me I have never in my life made a cake, pudding or biccie for Christmas. And marzipan comes in a packet😂

      Like

      • Clearly your talents lie elsewhere. I’ll bet you can drum up a wicked hot toddy. Or a Brandy Alexander! I haven’t had one of those in years and imo, they double as a dessert. Besides, you do a pavlova. ‘Nuff said.

        Like

      • Marzipan is so easy to make, and the homemade variety can be made with a little less sugar and more almonds than what you buy. Don’t you even make Christmas cake? I find a lot of the traditional Christmas cookies/biscuits are surprisingly easy to make. But then of course I have made them more or less every year since I was 13 or 14 years old.

        Like

        • Nope, I wouldn’t know where to even start. Plus, i don’t really like Christmas cake. My hubby likes it though and my sister usually makes a small one for him.

          Like

          • Well, a pavlova IS more modern, so if you don’t like the traditional baked goods a pavlova is the way to go to impress guests and not be left with a lot of uneaten cookies come January.

            Like

        • Ingeborg, do you put an egg white or an egg in the marzipan? I don’t have my mother’s recipe. The one I use is from a Dutch cookbook and calls for either the white if an egg or a whole egg. I make my almond paste/marzipan about three weeks before I need it to let the flavours develop in the fridge. Because it sits so long, I only add the egg just before using it. I use it for Gevulde Speculaas (filled Speculaas), Banket, and Christmas bread.
          So, egg? Yes or no?
This blog is going to be a baking one soon!

          Like

          • So, I’m used to adding the white of an egg, and not the whole egg. I seem to be allergic to eggs now, so avoid it in the marzipan I make, but that also makes it harder to get a manageable almond paste. I have to knead the paste more to get it to stick together and without the white of an egg it is easy to suddenly manipulate it too much and then too much of the almond fat shows on the surface, not a good look!

            Like

            • Yes, I understand that. The kneading releases the oils from the almonds. I’ve been adding just the white of the egg as well and I guess I’ll carry in with that. I’m pretty sure my Mum didn’t, but it really helps to bind the paste. Thanks for trading baking tips

  15. Not Thanksgiving but we had a party last night, a combination of birthday and a moving house. I did a roast with a twist: roasted sausages over root vegetables. Potato, carrot, parsnip, beetroot, sweet potato and beetroot. As they roast, the cooking juices from the snags drizzle over them. Easy and yum.

Today I’ve got Polo on, the green bottle one. This is a pretty heavy, piney scent, probably a bit of an acquired taste.

    Like

    • Greg, have you ever smelled or worn any of the Polo’s in the black bottle? I think there are three of them. I was at the gym a while ago and one of the members smelled fantastic. I asked him what he was wearing and he said Polo, in the black bottle. I can’t figure out which one it was. I’d love to get some for myself. It was a warm, spicy, a tiny bit sweet and slightly powdery. The note I could smell the most was cinnamon, and I adore cinnamon in a winter type fragrance.
      Any ideas?

      • Hi Marcella. I have Polo Double Black, which would definitely be a cool weather fragrance for me. I don’t think that’s the one you’re thinking of though. PDB smells predominantly of coffee to me, and a very nice coffee at that.

        Like

        • Thanks Greg. I’ll do a bit of research on that one and see if the notes seem like what I smelled. Is that a vintage scent, btw? This man was not ‘one of us’, if you know what I mean, and probably isn’t aware that vintage is a thing.

          Like

        • Double Black got discontinued, although it still seems pretty available on eBay. It’s not that vintage, in production 2006-2016, roughly.

Now, if only I can get the cards out in time for Christmas this year, that usually does not happen with more than half of them.
