Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 25.11 – 1.12.2019
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

I am going to bed in a cloud of Theorema. Having so much trouble sleeping these days, and it did not become better after receiving news that my application for further intensive physical rehabilitation has been turned down. This leaves me with only the twice weekly sessions with my physiotherapist and I’ll be pretty much isolated at home during winter, I just don’t have the strength yet to handle the icy pavements in a safe way. Haven’t even walked 5000 steps each day, which does seem like a fair goal given my current limitations.
I did take advantage of the special offer from StC on Friday, so finally getting a decant of Equistrius (and a couple of other things), so looking forward to getting the small decant, have already had and thunked several samples. Marcella, are you familiar with Advocaat made by Bols or Verpoorten? It’s a traditional Dutch liquor made from a combination of eggs, sugar and brandy; a bright creamy yellow colour, with rich egg custard aromas and flavours that are balanced by light brandy notes. Far more delicious than eggnog IMO. It’s easier to find in Canada than in the US. My sister brings a bottle when she travels from T.Bay to Arizona.

Advocaat!! Hell yes! With or without whipped cream?? I prefer with, of course.
Eggnog was not familiar to me until my early 20’s. In our household (Dutch) only Advocaat was served. Like pumpkin pie, eggnog became an acquired taste for me. Now I like them both, cuz I’m greedy that way 😉

Marzipan is so easy to make, and the homemade variety can be made with a little less sugar and more almonds than what you buy. Don’t you even make Christmas cake? I find a lot of the traditional Christmas cookies/biscuits are surprisingly easy to make. But then of course I have made them more or less every year since I was 13 or 14 years old.

Well, a pavlova IS more modern, so if you don’t like the traditional baked goods a pavlova is the way to go to impress guests and not be left with a lot of uneaten cookies come January.

Ingeborg, do you put an egg white or an egg in the marzipan? I don’t have my mother’s recipe. The one I use is from a Dutch cookbook and calls for either the white if an egg or a whole egg. I make my almond paste/marzipan about three weeks before I need it to let the flavours develop in the fridge. Because it sits so long, I only add the egg just before using it. I use it for Gevulde Speculaas (filled Speculaas), Banket, and Christmas bread.
So, egg? Yes or no?
This blog is going to be a baking one soon!
LikeLike
So, I’m used to adding the white of an egg, and not the whole egg. I seem to be allergic to eggs now, so avoid it in the marzipan I make, but that also makes it harder to get a manageable almond paste. I have to knead the paste more to get it to stick together and without the white of an egg it is easy to suddenly manipulate it too much and then too much of the almond fat shows on the surface, not a good look!

Yes, I understand that. The kneading releases the oils from the almonds. I’ve been adding just the white of the egg as well and I guess I’ll carry in with that. I’m pretty sure my Mum didn’t, but it really helps to bind the paste. Thanks for trading baking tips

Not Thanksgiving but we had a party last night, a combination of birthday and a moving house. I did a roast with a twist: roasted sausages over root vegetables. Potato, carrot, parsnip, beetroot, sweet potato and beetroot. As they roast, the cooking juices from the snags drizzle over them. Easy and yum.
Today I’ve got Polo on, the green bottle one. This is a pretty heavy, piney scent, probably a bit of an acquired taste.

Greg, have you ever smelled or worn any of the Polo’s in the black bottle? I think there are three of them. I was at the gym a while ago and one of the members smelled fantastic. I asked him what he was wearing and he said Polo, in the black bottle. I can’t figure out which one it was. I’d love to get some for myself. It was a warm, spicy, a tiny bit sweet and slightly powdery. The note I could smell the most was cinnamon, and I adore cinnamon in a winter type fragrance.
Any ideas?

Hi Marcella. I have Polo Double Black, which would definitely be a cool weather fragrance for me. I don’t think that’s the one you’re thinking of though. PDB smells predominantly of coffee to me, and a very nice coffee at that.
LikeLike
Thanks Greg. I’ll do a bit of research on that one and see if the notes seem like what I smelled. Is that a vintage scent, btw? This man was not ‘one of us’, if you know what I mean, and probably isn’t aware that vintage is a thing.

Double Black got discontinued, although it still seems pretty available on eBay. It’s not that vintage, in production 2006-2016, roughly.
You might point your mate to Mens Biz, who have 20% off everything for Black Friday. Lots of nice fragrances there, and shipping is free.

Your roast sounds wonderful Greg, I need to try that recipe.
And you are smelling wonderful in your Polo in the green bottle. I have a friend that has been wearing that as his signature scent since the 80s. He always smells fantastic!

Wearing Mandarin Basilic again, the weather is dreary and I feel out of sorts, but happy to have scored Christmas napkins at a reduced price and found some nice Christmas cards too. Now, if only I can get the cards out in time for Christmas this year, that usually does not happen with more than half of them.

I’m hopeless with the cards. It’s always a last minute, rushed job.
Hope you’re feeling better!

Crikey! I replied to you and don’t see the reply anywhere! Long and short of it was that I’m miserable at Christmas cards. Always a last minute, rushed effort. Feel better!

Palate cleanse in Green Tea. I have been up since 3am. Our fur baby fell asleep on top of Mr Marzipan’s head and literally pushed him off his pillow. When he started to snore she ran out of the room and began meowing at youngest’s bedroom door. I got up to hush her and keep her company.
I went food shopping, gased up two cars, went to two banks, the post office and the pharmacy. Now I am in bed LOL 😂

I just realized I’ve been forgetting to post my fragrances. Too busy chatting about Xmas baking. Oops. So, for those of you busting to know (and I’m sure there are legions of you 🙄) it’s been a Pierre Guillaume week! Felanilla, l’Ombre Fauve, Coze, Indochine and Aomassai.
I think next week I might stick with Malle. Less thinking and deciding to do!

Got the rare Bally Masculin on today. This is principally a lavender scent with a hint of vetiver; I don’t get much of the anise that’s supposed to be there, just a very smooth and civilised scent.

Tonka Imperiale from the PPP! Love it to death. I had the chance to try this a couple of weeks ago when I was at the Guerlain counter replacing my bottle of Cuir Beluga. I deliberately avoided it, suspecting that I would love it and then be faced with the decision of buying two Guerlain bottles. That would have been a stomach churning amount of cash to lay out. Good thing I left it alone. It would have jumped right into my shopping bag. On to the Xmas list it goes!

I am not sure if I tried that one when I was at SAKS in the city last month. The Guerlain section was beyond words. I thought they were all delicious in that series, including the newest one which featured ylang.

Another discontinued scent from my mini collection today: Brooksfield Men. This is a pretty good all-rounder: bit of bergamot, bit of lavender, bit of sweetness, bit of wood. One that you could wear all year round, but you’d nearly always reach for something more memorable.

Yesterday I had an iris day. Orris Noir for starters and then for going out last night I prettied it up with Iris Poudre. Today was Lys Mediteranee. This is lovely lily but doesn’t have great longevity on me, unusually for Malle. It’s only after 6.30 here but have just jumped into my cosy bed. Worn out with relatives😂
