Saturday Question: What Is On Your High Rotation Tray?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Secret Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)

Last Weeks Winner: Old Herbaceous

Saturday Question: What Is On Your High Rotation Tray?

Do you have a High Rotation Tray? An easy to get to, grab spritz and go selection of fragrance? Somewhere you put the seasons choices, your work wears or just your current favourites.

My Answer:

It’s got to the point where I need to trays for my high rotation frags. Not all of them get worn super regularly. Some are aspirational high rotation, you know? The ones I want to wear more often because I love them but that often get overlooked. This happens a lot around here.

Just to give you an idea, here are my two trays. Loads of Cartier, CHANEL, Neela Vermeire Creations, Parfums de Nicolai, DIOR, Mona di Orio, Robert Piguet and L’Artisan.

My Saturday Question to you is:

What Is On Your High Rotation Tray?

  1. I don’t have a rotation tray. My perfumes are organized in my perfume cabinet by season, so I usually go with whatever my mood dictates. I wear something different everyday, hoping that I can eventually reach every single perfume I have in my huge collection. I would say that 50% of my
perfumes will sadly be neglected. Too much to handle!

  2. I don’t have a rotation tray either. My Guerlains are easy to grab. I try to wear something different each day. Sometimes a cheap and cheerful. I do like the spicy Adam Levine.

  3. I don’t have a tray. I don’t rotate my perfumes, I wear whatever I feel like on the day. Not having defined seasons here means I can wear a heavy-hitter spice in the middle of July or something light and citrusy in December.

    • I like this…not defining seasons. I often find myself gravitating towards winter scents in the summer ( Winter Woods) and summer scents in the winter ( Green Tea).

  4. No tray for me either.

Right now there is a bottle of Noa on my desk at work.

In the bedroom SSS Incense Pure because Mr. Marzipan thinks that one smells sexy on me…. go figure.

On the shelf in the bathroom Jo Malone Vintage Gardenia and Elizabeth Arden Green Tea which have been my go to staples as of late. Also on said shelf my super patched up Mistral Patchouli which is turning into my weekly yoga class scent.

In the basement an open box which stores decants that I am still exploring.

  5. Oh my! I have never counted my full bottles. I should one of these days, but compared to other perfumistas here my collection is very small! They are a lot to me!!!!!
    How about you?

    • What is EXCLUSIVELY mine as in no one but myself uses it roughly around 15. But what belongs to the family and/ or exclusive to minis and Mr. Marzipan, maybe 50? That would be my guess. I am NOT counting the full bottles that my parents have “borrowed” 🙃

        • Those are usually the ones that they don’t want to wear. Anything that someone likes I have a very hard time saying NO when they want to “borrow” it. Even my most treasured perfumes I would give up if someone really, really wanted it

    • I haven’t counted mine for a while, the last time I checked, there were 124, but I might have bought at least ten bottles since then. Maybe fifteen. I don’t really want to know.

  6. I like the aerial view of the high-rotation trays in dramatic black&white.

No hrt for me as I have just have three trays for my entire collection (barring some living room overspill where the samples mostly are). Working on emptying a couple of decants, and have also been sticking a lot to one bottle per week for office wear – this week was Mugler Supra Floral and next week might be ELO Bendelirious.

  7. I have an imaginary tray. It’s called The Craveables. The tray has several fragrances that I crave in particular seasons. At this time of year there is a steady rotation between Cuir Beluga, Musc Ravageur, Le Mat and Aomassai. They are all rich and intensely comforting. The summer craveables would definitely include Carnal Flower, Salome, Parfum de Thérèse and, oddly enough Eau Duelle. These are perfumes that I don’t have to be in a specific mood for. They feel right each and every time I wear them.

  8. I have no tray, all my perfume is in a dark closet organized by house, with the exception of a few cheapies and ones I keep just because I like the pretty bottle in a glass-doored bathroom cabinet. With hundreds of fragrances, nothing is in high rotation, except perhaps Vanille 44 that I wear to bed. I choose my scent of the day randomly according to mood, but never the same one more often than perhaps once a month.

  9. Gorgeous high rotation trays Portia! I have a similar high rotation mirror tray that I keep in my clothes closet with my most worn. All of my bottles are stored in the basement in an armoire for dark and cool environment. I bring up bottles that I include on my high rotation tray. It varies and I’m really trying to rotate more to include a variety. Regular HRT staples include Chanel Coromandel, Bois des Isles, No 5, Dior Hypnotic Poison, JD Duality, Fath de Fath, Boucheron, Givenchy Ysatis, Habanita, and Mono Di Orio Musc and Heeley Blanc for office wear.
I think it was Greg who suggested bring out 7 bottles each week and wearing one perfume each day, to give neglected bottles more wear. I’m trying this.

    • Thanks Kathleen,
YAY! We have trays! Isn’t it a good way to get stuff on your skin?
HOW freaking laving are your list of usual suspects. G L A M
Yeah, it was Greg. I haven’t done it but it does sound like a good idea.

  10. No tray here but some I am called to regularly, and those are mostly rose and amber or white florals. I tend to grab Tauerville Rose Flash, Perfumer’s Workshop. Serge Lutens La Fille, SL Ambre Sultan, Annick Goutal Ambre Sauvage and Ambre Fetiche more than others. I also love my old standby Jessica McClintock, and always wear Penhaligon’s Bluebell on a job interview.

  11. i have no rotation tray, but moved my favorite winter bottles to the front: Felanilla, Fille en Aiguilles, vintage Shalimar EdT, Adam Levine, Calligraphy Saffron, Bottega Veneta. But i have lots of decants, so i try to use a different scent each day. Today i wore Vintage Shalimar.

  12. No tray for me either since I wear different perfume every day but I use my database to see which perfumes I neglected for too long. I’m slowly going through perfumes in my list to add some attributes to each – appropriate season(s), occasions, etc. – to help with rotation.
Now is my favorite time of the year (not just perfumes-wise but I’ll concentrate on the topic): I get to wear all of my ambers, vanillas and other “heavy-hitters.”

  13. I’m more of a decants/samples guy so my ‘tray’ is actually a lipstick holder filled with samples. I do have one holder within easy reach, but rather than being filled with favourites, it’s filled with samples I’ve yet to try, the idea being I will try them if they’re not hidden away. Once I’ve tried a sample it will then be moved to one of the less accessible areas.

  14. No rotation tray here. I have a long shelf in a double wide closet. Perfumes are sorted by size – full bottles to the left, travel and large decants in the middle, small decants and samples to the right (in lipstick organizers!). I tend to wear seasonally so I will sometimes rearrange the full bottles but usually I just grab what catches my eye, unless I’m doing a random number generator week!

  15. I don’t have many perfumes that I return to a lot. If anything I’m trying to get away from that and wear my of my collection. I’ve yet to empty a bottle of perfume, even after more than ten years of collecting.

Fragrances that do seem to get a regular outing are Tom of Finland, Monsieur Balmain, TF London, TF Amber Absolute, Journey Man, and a few morel.

    • Interesting you include Tom Ford London Greg,
I was just noticing that it’s not available in Oz anymore and there is a sale doc selling large decants for amazing prices. It’s one of the loveliest TFs to me. Not new or revelatory but utterly wearable and yummy.

  16. I dont have a rotation tray either and usually the last perfume I have worn is one of the latest acquisitions. My stuff is in boxes but in the future, I may go for cupboard system instead of rotation tray. I think my mood rather than season usually determines what I wear and the rotation system seems to work better for those whose choices are greatly influenced by the season as I have noticed that tray system usually displays perfumes appropriate to the season (warm compositions in cold season and fresh/airy compositions during warm/hot season).

  17. Portia, your high rotation tray is more substantial than my entire collection. At the moment I mostly wear light, fresh and ‘safe’ fragrances, like Chanel Paris-Deauville or Venise, something with citrus. I’m around animals (of the 4-legged and furry kind) a lot and unfortunately they don’t appreciate fine fragrance as much as I do. The critters actually take umbrage 🙂

  18. I don’t have a tray but there are things I’ve really been wearing a lot lately and traveling with decants of, which gets them even more wear. Dryad is number one, with Misia lagging just slightly behind. A chaque instant and Azemour when I need a slightly different mossy kick than Dryad provided. I Miss Violet and Bruma. Iris Perle and for something completely different Bengale Rouge.

  19. I have a high rotation tray which was a gift from you, and I just love it! Works really well for me. Current residents are: Reve d’Ossian, Horizon, Portrait of a Lady, Jazz, Magie Noire, L’arte Di Gucci, Mystere, Angel, A*men, Intense Cafe , Volutes and Ambre Russe! Things I love and the tray reminds me to wear them. Thank you 🙂

  20. Your trays sure look impressive, Portia! Unfortunately, I don’t have one (not enough space), but there are a few bottles I like to keep close: Issara, Shalimar & Mitsouko, some iris and something rosy. Oh, and newcomers, of course.

Old Herbaceous, congrats on your win!

  21. My fragrances are organized by season, then by notes within those seasons. I’m so obsessed with keeping them fresh forever, so they are kept on shelves in a dark cool closet and never left out. I do have a trusty few that I keep upfront in easy reach and are my go-to’s for work meetings, travel, weekend errand-running, weddings and social events, etc. as follows: Origins Ginger Essence, Kate Spade Trulyjoyful, L’Occitane Citrus Verbena, Auric Blends One Love, Dame Dark Horse, Atelier des Ors Lune Feline, and AG Eau d’Hadrien,
