Happy New Year dear APJ! How did you celebrate the new year? Do any of you write new year resolutions?

We survived the holidays – barely. It was a host of things that just made it terribly stressful for us all. New Year’s Eve was a complete dud as I wrongly assumed that they would be doing loads of fireworks in our village. Not quite sure if it is just not tradition here to do as many fireworks as they do on the national holiday or if it was the thick fog that set in here in the hills. Anyway – we started celebrating on the 1st to make up for the previous night.

It has been years since I have done anything resembling a resolution, but this year I decided to keep it relatively simple and to stick to one resolution. I walk a lot but I need to improve on increasing my uphill speed and strength without triggering my asthma. My resolution is to walk as much as I can including uphill climbs. At least I can get lots of good photos in this idyllic scenery.

2020 will hopefully also be a good year for perfume. It does not need to be huge numbers of beautiful fragrances, but please a handful of excellent ones to ring in the new decade.

So far I am excited to see what 2020 will bring and I can tell you about a new fragrance for April Aromatics. Yes, I know, it was technically launched at the end of 2019 but that is to my mind saying goodbye to the old and ringing in the new. Sticking to my tradition of starting the new year with something fragrant I was excited to test Tanja Bochnig’s new creation called Vetiver Cœur.

Tanja Bochnig lists the following notes on the April Aromatics website: lemon, bergamot, mandarin, pink pepper, nutmeg, coriander, orange flower absolute, clary sage, iris, rose absolute, vetiver Haiti and India, sandalwood mysore, cedarwood virginia, orris root, tobacco, carnation and tonka bean.

It has been a while since I have experienced such a gloriously realistic citrus at the start of perfume. Vetiver Cœur’s opening is almost as if I am squeezing fresh lemon juice into a glass. But the amazing part is that it lasts for quite some time. This is not a 10 second start to a perfume which then falls flat. This is a grand opening and it is bright and light and evokes summer in my mind.

The perfume literally blossoms with a floral accord which is quite delicate. I can detect the iris and the clary sage ever so softly whispering to me. Vetiver is usually a harsh note for me to take, but the vetiver oil that is used in Vetiver Cœur is incredibly smooth. The dry down is extremely well rounded and soothing with the vetiver elegantly intertwining with the sandalwood.

Never before would I have categorized vetiver as an elegant note for me to wear. Tanja Bochnig has now shown me just how delicate the right vetiver can be. I am not surprised anymore when I love one of Ms. Bochnig’s creations, but I am bowled over that I can now say that I adore a vetiver perfume and need a vat of it in my house. It is in her ability to create something of such beauty with natural materials.

    Resolution is to stay calm.

    Vetiver can be tricky for me. Right now my favorite is Phlur Greylocke. I have worn it myself but it’s currently in the possession of my son.

    Vetiver is a fragrance note that I’m not very familiar with, I tend not to go for vetiver fragrances so no recommendations from me.

  5. Lovely pics and review! Gelukkig Nieuwjaar! I hope you’ve had the worst behind you. After many horrible accidents (again) this New Year’s Eve the Dutch government is on the verge of prohibiting the private sales and use of fireworks. All major city mayors, all eye surgeons and many doctors, police, fire brigade, first responders/paramedics and animal welfare organisations have practically begged for this for years. I really hope next year there only will be supervised responsibly organised municipality firework shows…

    As for Vetiver Coeur, I love it. It took 2 wearings before I did, but I just knew I would. You have described it beautifully. I used to love Vetiver Extraordinaire, but I find it too masculine now. I am glad the vetiver vacuum in my collection has been filled by Tanja!

    I hope you can keep heading for those hills…

As much fun as it was, I am in agreement with the officials who call for the ban of private use of fireworks. I am so pleased to hear that you love Vetiver Cœur as well. Tanja has done a wonderful job and I look forward to buying it for my collection.

  6. Sorry your holidays were tough, hopefully the new year will bring peace and good health. Your photos are gorgeous, it makes me want to walk with you! I used to adore vetiver but lately I’m less drawn to it. I am going more for iris and resins, probably because I feel the need for calming, centering scents right now.

    • Hey Tara. I would love to walk with you. Oh now iris and resins are my go to fragrances most of the time too. The calming aspect is what was so surprising in Vetiver Cœur.

  7. yes, pictures are one of the best things about your reviews. I have a mixed relationship with vetiver. Carven and Guerlain vetivers are classics but I don’t enjoy them as much as I should. I like Malle Vetiver and Lalique Encre Noire. Did not like L’Artisan Vetiver Coeur either. Do like Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. I guess I like effervescent vetivers or maybe when they are deployed very unique as Lalique Encre Noire with its inky composition shows. I have Chanel Sycomore edt, too which is actually the more expensive one and usually praised more but I think Lalique’s version is not only cheaper but also better.

    • Thank you Fazal. Vetiver seems it can be a tricky one for people. I remember trying Lalique Encre Noire and liking it. Not sure why I did not pick up a bottle. I also enjoyed smelling the Malle one. Sycomore is beautiful on so many people but unfortunately my asthma goes haywire with it. I will have ample opportunity in a couple of weeks to go perfume sniffing. Have a great week.

  8. Happy new year, Sandra. Sorry your celebrations were more damp squib than fireworks but there’s always this tear😉 This sounds like a great wearable Vetiver for non vetiver people. My first brush with this note was Lalique Encre Noir which was actually my hubby’s but I swiped lots of it. Tauer’s Vetiver Dance is also very good, lots of other things going on in it too.

    • And just on the subject of fireworks, it’s illegal for individuals to buy or to have any in their possession here. Though some people openly flout this. Only licensed and organised firework displays are allowed.

      • May I ask where you live? On Swiss National Day, 1 August, it was pretty much a free for all for two days straight here. I need to read up on the laws here to understand.
