Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 17.2-23.2.2020
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

I wore partial Opium Fraicheur that arrived. I must say it, indeed, has a very realistic cola note as some reviewers noticed. It is actually alcohol-free so I was surprised it lasted for more than 10 hours on my skin with just 3 sprays. I got regular wafts from time to time. Overall, I am glad to have it in my collection.

Well I left a comment but it disappeared. But in case it shows up I take back what I said. It reminds me of Mitzah but it’s Slowdive that reminds me of Bengal Rouge.

Really? Slowdive and Bengal Rouge? On me, Slowdive is all about the honey. Lovely and hyper realistic, but not much more going on in there. I had hoped that BR would be a little more nuanced.
LikeLike
Bengal Rouge was extremely sweet on my skin. And Slowdive is the same…..honey, caramel and Tonka to my nose. Hopefully Kathleen will chime in because she has worn Bengal Rouge a lot and knows it’s nuances.
LikeLike
Sweet I usually like. But I don’t need another honey perfume. Poo Bear will be following me around the block.

Do you have a favorite honey? Tara C gave me a bottle of Paramela which is my holy Grail honey….citrus, herbs, honey and Paramela wood. The drydown is sweet and delightful. Plus, I love that very few know about it or wear it.
LikeLike
With the exception of Slowdive I don’t seek out fragrances with a honey note. If it’s there, no problem, though. I believe Indochine, which I wore today probably has honey in there.
LikeLike
I can see the comparison of Bengale Rouge with Slowdive because of the honey in both. Slow dive to me is more honey, BR has much more and very well-blended with sandalwood, myrrh, Tonka. I can’t really pick up each note individually, the overall impression is very vintage. Almost powdery drydown but again more.
LikeLike
Thank you!!!! Perfectly put 😻

Sounds extremely appealing. I like Slowdive from time to time, but it’s rather linear on me. Honey, honey and then more honey.

Liz Moores was inspired to create Bengale Rouge by one of her cats. It truly is soft and sensual, like the most beautiful cat fur. My best comparison is to L’Air de Desert Marocain; not that they smell similar in any way. However, they both have a very dry, seamlessly blended unique scent. It’s difficult to describe but with both when wearing, you keep smelling the best smell ever, and realize it is you. The more I wear it, the more I love it. I wish I could spray it on you!
I, like you also love Salome.

That doesn’t surprise me at all. That’s one reason why I don’t take a more active approach to sampling new releases. I reckon pretty much everything has been explored and done by now. And oftentimes, better, the first time around.

Tuesday I ventured back into the pool for a swim session. It was a complete and utter failure. I was cramping badly and could not swim even one length without stopping. So I gave up and went over to the oldies pool and did some hydrotherapy on my shoulder. Too soon, I guess. Anyway I had some Demeter Linden fragrance oil in my shower bag, so that was my SOTD.
Today is L’Artisan Fou d’Ansinthe.
I have been getting serious about thunking. In the lest few days I have sold bottles of Millesime Imperial, Green Irish Tweed and Serge Lutens Arabie. I plan to keep this up and really pare my collection down.

Hi everyone, what does ‘thunk’ and ‘thunked’ mean? I see it a lot and don’t know what it is. Hope someone can explain…
LikeLike
Hi Carolyn! Are you new around here? Welcome. I believe this term came via Brigitte. Perhaps she has the trademark on it 🤔. Thunk is the sound a decant/bottle makes when you toss it in the bin cuz it’s empty. So, if someone has thunked a bottle of Angel (for eg) it means they’ve finished the bottle or decant. A source of pride for many perfumistas esp if they have a substantial collection. For the record, I am not an avid thunker. My collection is not that big and I tend to hoard!! The thunkers are very anti-hoarding, so I’ll get in heck for this confession 🤣
LikeLike
Thank you! ☺ I’ve been following APJ for a few years but early on I didn’t always get to read everything so I must’ve missed the beginning of “thunk”. I’m not a collector, I just love perfume and reading about it. I usually thunk after my birthday and Xmas because my son has strict instructions to gift me with perfume. He learned very quickly to ask what I wanted after he made a few disastrous choices (he went for quantity over quality). The budget is $AU50 so no high end anything but it keeps me happy and smelling nice. I’m not a hoarder either, I’m a user; I think what’s the point in having perfume if it just sits in a drawer, perfume is made to be worn and enjoyed. I hope I haven’t offended the the hoarders, I’m sure I’d be one too if I could afford it 😉 Thanks again for your very friendly explanation and reply. ☺
LikeLike
I am not a hoarder either and pretty much use up what I have. We all approach this hobby in different ways so I don’t think anyone takes offence 💜💜 Some of us have collections of 1500+ bottles and others just 2-3 favorites that get worn over and over.

I count any reducing of the collection as a thunk, including selling. I think somebody told me that was OK.

Hi Saffyishere, I live in Adelaide, South Australia. Where are you?
Did auto correct “think” your “thunk”? LOL
As I said to marcellavmiller, I’m not a collector, I’m a user (wearer). I only have a few mainstream perfumes from the lower end of the price range, 5th Avenue, Oscar de la Renta, Arpege, Balenciaga Paris, Bvlgari Jasmine Noir and a Bvlgari rose one, an Estee Lauder (can’t remember the name), and some Avon Imari; my Mum gave me a little roll on one year and I loved it, so she gave me some every 6 months or so until Avon left Australia. I guess that’s the only perfume I’m hoarding ‘cos I know once it’s gone, it’s gone ☹ Oh, there’s a tiny, empty but for the smell, bottle of Champs Elysees I chose from a Geurlain miniatures set Mum bought when she and Dad went o’seas 20 yrs ago, I loved it! And 6 months ago a friend gifted me a full Prada L’eau Ambrée eau de parfum and body lotion which is gorgeous!
I didn’t realise I had that much till just now, I feel quite rich 😄

Hi Carolyn! Welcome! Marcella have a great explanation. But I will also add that I count anything that leaves my collection via ” borrowing” or gifting as a thunk.

Yes, there is a new Bat being released with Sloth. I tried quite a few from this brand, none compelling enough for me to buy full bottles but I know other perfume folks really love some of them . I think I am more intrigued by the bottle and name when it comes to Sloth.

I wore Cologne du 68 today for a trip down to Daylesford for some serious vintage shopping. It must have bought me luck, because I found another pre-WW1 Jicky bottle. Nothing in this one, sadly, but I bought it anyway. Oh, and there was a full bottle of 90s era Givenchy Gentleman there as well. 🙂
I picked up another thing because it cost next to nothing. A 1940s era mini of Chypre de Coty in cream form. Looks like there might be a bit left too.

Sylvaine Ozkan, orange blossom and leather. Very nice indeed, but still a problem with longevity.

I have the orange blossom sampler set, cassieflower, and I would agree. Haven’t tried them all yet … perhaps today.

They’re all really lovely for the first fifteen minutes or so but then almost disappear. A tweaking of materials could sort this out.
