Rose Cut by Bertrand Duchaufour for Ann Gerard 2014

Heya Cool Cats,

So here is the latest buzz frag. It seems to be a complete hit.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Aldehydes, rum, pink pepper
Heart: Rose, peony, patchouli
Base: Vanilla, oakmoss, benzoin

I was a little let down by how Rose Cut performed on my skin. It was a lot like quite a few other fragrances from Voleur de Roses by L`Artisan Parfumeur, Gucci Rush, Narcisso Rodriguez for Her, Etc Etc. Yes, I know they are different scents and wear quite differently but that luminous aquatic floral has been done much more comfortably for my skin than this. It’s pretty, bright and fun and I think it will get a huge following. In fact if the other reviews are anything to go by this is definitely a winner. The bottles look so elegant and I really like the whole Ann Gerard aesthetic. Can I also say that I may be a bit snarky because I was expecting so much and my chemistry has let us both down tonight.

So it’s now about half an hour later. I was reading and put my chin on my hand and was like, What Is That Fabulous Smell? It is Rose Cut. After a very nice, simple opening Rose Cut becomes a lovely soft clean patchouli, floral bouquet with a touch of sweet resin that is a little human, worn and healthy. I’m surprised there is no mention of musk or leather in the notes because both seem very apparent and for such a soft fragrance it is remarkably noticeable. I wish it was slightly heftier though.

Rose Cut is lovely through the middle. Soft focus, beautiful and quite distinctly memorable. A bit like Marilyn Monroe above and definitely flesh and pink coloured. MMMMMM.

  1. I have not tried Rose Cut yet. I have tried the other Ann Gerard’s and fell in love with Cuir de Nacre. Despite layering it over body creams and spraying very generously multiple times, it wears extremely close to the skin and very quietly. As in glue my nose to my wrist quiet. I think that just might be the style of this house. Still, when I’m in the mood it is the most beautiful thing to wear.

  2. Portia, I had high hopes but was disappointed by it. Hard to remember why exactly as tried so many other things that night (at Perfume Lovers london). Perhaps I should have waited it out.

Love the soft focus Marilyn shot.

  3. I have tried it on card at Kew tube station of all places, and quite liked it. Wasn’t wowed though, and it was on a day when I tested a ton of stuff (possibly the same day to which Tara alludes!), so maybe not a fair trial on both counts.

  4. I won a sample of this, fun, and I quite liked it.
There’s nothing not to like, but nothing spectacular either. Pretty but I get lots of patchouli too.

    • Ahh. LOTS of patchouli? A clean soft patch or did you get the full headshop experience?
It was pretty clean and muted for me.

        • I am so happy to read that the opening worked for you JackieB. Clearly it has been working for others too or the bloggers wouldn’t be so excited but nice to know someone around here who the opening works for.

  5. I want to try it: I liked the other three perfumes: not enough for a FB (those are huge in RL!) but enough for the discovery set. But I want to like all 4 to buy that set, not just 3.

    • I think you will like it Undina, with the same near FB like. They are good solid fragrances and if I didn’t already have hundreds more than I need I would think about it.
