Saturday Question: What Is Your Favourite Guerlain Fragrance?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Saturday Question: What Is Your Favourite Guerlain Fragrance?

Recently there was a Guerlain Week on Facebook Fragrance Friends. I love those special weeks because they remind me to think outside my usual parameters and wear things that have sat neglected or forgotten. It’s fun and interesting.

The Guerlain that get the most wear around here are Shalimar, Mitsouko and Samsara. I have loads of them and they’re really easy to find even if I was in danger of running out. The fragrance that is my favourite though is DCd, almost impossible to find and smells freaking amazing. I am so worried about not having any left that I almost never wear it.

My Answer:

Une Ville. Un Parfum – 01 Moscow by Guerlain 2009

Parfums gives these featured accords:
Top: Bergamot, Plum, Pine needle, Lemon, Absinth, Cranberry
Heart: Jasmine
Base: Sandalwood, Tonka bean, White musk, Vanilla

Looking at these notes I would NEVER have thought I’d even like this fragrance. Somehow though they fit me perfectly. That sweet, nutty, sharp fruitiness that gives way to creamy white musk, woods and sweet beans captures me like no other. MMMMMM

My Saturday Question to you is:

What Is Your Favourite Guerlain Fragrance?

  1. My absolute Guerlain favorite is Encense Mythique D’Orient. I always need to have it in my collection.

  2. There are many Guerlain bottles in my collection, but when I see the rapidly dwindling level of Cuir Beluga, I realise how often I wear it.
My favourite that I sampled but do not own is Iris Ganache. Yummmm

  3. Guerlain is probably the most under represented house in my collection…. don’t know why. I wore Shalimar EDC when I was 12 a LONG time ago. Also wore LHeure Bleue about 10 years ago and drained two bottles so I guess it was a favorite. Was recently gifted Meteorites which middle Marzipan laid claim to and Vol de Nuit EDT which I like but it lasts an hour on me. I also have the extrait which is very animalic and I perfer just wearing at home. And had a sample of Encens Mythique which I enjoyed and thunked. And fairly certain that I had a travel spray of Samsara when it first came out.

    • L’Heure Bleue is a classic that I appreciate, but I was never able to wear it in any concentration. Sadly, it is just not for me.

      • Yes I definitely think it’s a love it or hate it type of fragrance. The girls always said it smelled “old fashioned” but I remember wearing it to work one day and a Co worker who never gave me the time of day would not stop talking about how great I smelled ( she was a Bath and Body works fan)

  4. Hands down, the first Guerlain or expensive perfume that I ever owned about 25 or more years ago: Jardin de Bagatelle.

  5. This is a very difficult question for me. I’m a big Guerlain fan. I love all the ones in my collection. The first Guerlain I ever owned many moons ago was Jardin de Bagatelle as well. My friend bought me a bottle last Christmas. I’m going to go for Mitsouko.

  6. Shalimar perfume. Preferably vintage from the late 60’s early 70’s.
Without question. My perfumista cred is wobbly when it comes to Guerlain. Currently I have vintage Shalimar, Eau de Guerlain and Cuir Beluga. However, in the 70’s I had all the biggies. Samsara, l’Heure Bleue, Jicky, Vol de Nuit, Nahema, , Chamade, and Jardins de Bagatelle. I’ve tried La Petite Robe Noire and some of it’s flankers but wasn’t impressed, and I guess I just figured that the best of Guerlain has long ago gone.

    • Ooo forgot about Chamade! I have a vintage Parfum sample tucked away…. gifted to me by a dear friend who is no longer in my life…. it’s one of her favorites.
And I had a small decant of the Black Perfecto Petite Robe Noire which I thunked a while ago.

        • I honestly don’t know because I had never tried Chamade prior to receiving this sample. It’s actually a manufacturer sample.

          • Try it! Try it! Try it! Pleeeeze. Just do it. It’ll be better than marzipan. I promise. Anyhow, what are you doing passing the time here? Shouldn’t you be out riding around and mowing the estate? With the rain we’ve been having the grass is growing as I watch!

            • Wait, which one am I trying? Contemporary Chamade? In the bee sprayer bottle?
Getting ready to mow in about half an hour. Haven’t shirked my duty LoL

                • And, Marcella, if you “need” this vintage extrait sample let me know and I will hunt for it and add it to your goody bag.

  7. Awww come on! How am I supposed to answer this?
    Mahora.
    No, Santal Royal.
    No, Parfum Initial.
    No, Shalimar Souffle.
    No, Samsara.
    No, Lys Soleia.
    No, Insolence
    No, Terracotta.
    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
    Mahora!

  8. I’m not a Guerlain fan, though it is hard to tell from the number of perfumes from this brand that I own in one of the “wearable form” (which for me would be either a bottle or a decant, since I don’t wear perfumes from samples). But there are several perfumes that I love, and the most favorite one is Cruel Gardenia – which on its own should tell the hardcore Guerlain fans how much I’m not one.
My second favorite is Ensence Mythique, Chamade extrait and Jicky extrait.

  9. Easy question. It is vintage Samsara edp for me, nothing else from Guerlain comes close to it in my opinion and I don’t think Guerlain can ever top Samsara edp. It is ironical that Samsara is probably not original Guerlain creation as there is a speculation, contrary to official Guerlain marketing story, that it was created not by Jean-Paul Guerlain but an outsider.

    • God yeah. Samsara is a bomb. This was a very difficult question. It would be pushed down to second place for me cos Tuberose and Ylang.

      • Oops, hit post by mistake. I was trying to say that Mahora only made it to the top because of the addition of those two notes.

  10. Sheesh, do I gotta just state one?! *rhetorical outpouring of emotion*

Jicky. But in equal second goes L’Heure Bleue edp, Apres l’Ondee, Mitsi edt, L’Instant edt, L’Instant Magic, Black Perfecto edp, Habit Rouge edt, Mon Guerlain edp, Champs Elysee edt and L’Homme Ideal edp. Oh, and Eau de Cologne 68.

I have a Guerlain shelf, ready to drop all my bottles into, should there be a need to rush them to safety. They affect me that much.

    • There you are!! I missed you😍. Thanks for reminding me that a while back I mentally made note to try LHomme Ideal based on something Portia wrote. Portia is/was a fan of that one too. Don’t remember the notes in it though.
And while I have you here, am I remembering correctly that you enjoyed some of the Kyse Perfumes? If so which ones? I have sampled four of them and really enjoyed them, even more so because they are highly affordable and come in small sizes.

  11. Only one?! I choose Chant d’Aromes but really, Guerlain is my favourite house so there are a few other loves (vintage stuff).
