Hello Niche Nerds.

I make no disguise of the fact that I love this crew. Every time I try a new fragrance from them there is something magnetic, audacious and animal in every bottle. This particular decant came from a split run by Ruth K on FFF if my memory serves me correctly.

I have an apology to make, Baque is no longer available and was a limited release made for IndieScents. Josh tells me though that Slumberhouse will be bringing back a couple of their previous Limited Editions, Sana and Flou, in coming weeks so do go check out the Slumberhouse website for those.

So Baque, opens woodsy, sweet, rough and dangerous! The artemesia giving a gorgeous bitter and herbal depth that is at once antiseptic-fresh clean and healthy-damp compost-heap earthy. The apricot and vanilla sweetness cuts across all this forest through the mid range of wear and gives a syrup like patina that would be welcome on pancakes. I am sad that I never bought a bottle because Baque is so deep and luscious. I also detect a hint of freshly used coffee grounds and bitter, dark chocolate. Extraordinary scent that you will never find the likes of in Sephora unless we see drastic change in GP consumer tastes.

Towards the dry down the whole fragrance warms slightly into the vanilla and wood giving a golden warm sepia tint to the whole, much like the below image.

As with all the other Slumberhouse fragrances that I’ve tried and worn sillage is wonderful and projection moderate. Too fragrant for close office quarters, and probably quite a few not too close workplaces, unless fragrance is a welcomed addition to your person. I am fragrant from one spritz for more than 6 hours.

  1. You know, your comment about how much you like this line made me realize it is one that hasn’t been “under my radar” but that I haven’t sought out. I think perhaps I’m being influenced by the same, which makes me think of heaviness and sluggishness (slumber, I suppose!), and so I expect the perfumes to be dense and woody and not my sort of thing. I shall have to keep an eye out for them, though. It’s not good of me to give in to preconceptions. 🙂

    • Natalie, I won samples of the Slumberhouse extraits on Ca Fleure Bon. While most of them don’t really seem like my thing, sniffing them in the dabber vial (murky, woody, tobacco-laden, etc), I REALLY, like REALLY like Pear & Olive. I’ll get around to trying the woody ones too, eventually.

  4. I’m sorry I missed “Baque”. I both love and hate artemisia and am always on the lookout for scents featuring the bitter medicinal and the antiseptic. I’ve been meaning to give Slumberhouse a try too. Thank you for this post.

  6. I’m passionately in love with the Slumberhouse line! I have sampled Norne, Jeke, Grev, Rume, Vikt, Pear + Olive, Kere and Baque. I love the concepts so much, the evocative darkness of them! I love the names that give hints of a hidden mysterious meaning! Because of the lack of that mystic dark concept I find Pear + Olive rather boring… And Rume smells like rotting hay and urine on me… 😦 Vikt also has a slightly sour note that does not appeal. But I absolutely adore the rest of them! I think Jeke is my personal favorite… Baque is not one of my favorites, but it is wonderful none the less! On me it is quite a sweet scent and until I looked up the notes I was sure that it was a honey toacco scent, that is what it smells like to my nose! It is a very nice scent, but to me it is not as full of concept or as evocative as some of the others (notably Jeke and Norne).

      You are the poster girl for Slumberhouse.
      I am surprised that you find Pear + Olive boring. I love its frisson of sweet and savoury, its biting whip crack of green against the fruity and the bleu cheese punch lurking behind the main story.
      I do get that it’s not as dark or resinous or have the wonderful forest darkness to it though,
      So glad top have you join the conversation.

      • Wel the only images Pear + Olive evokes in me are those of a pretty garden, and on my skin there is no mystery at all… It is pretty much straight up pear with a hint of olive, kind of a nice soft woody background but not very special. And it is much to light and pretty for me, I need dark, gritty and sinister!! Norne and Jeke are much more my thing! I love the inspiration behind Norne. It is apparently inspired by a song called “Ind i Fjeldkamrene” by the Norwegian band Ulver.That song is in turn inspired by Scandinavian folklore and I just LOVE my Scandinavian folklore! But Jeke is the one Slumberhouse scent that really impresses me! That warm and smoky tobacco and leather scent will be my signature when I can find enough money to buy a bottle!

  7. I got the sample pack of these from StC and really enjoyed trying them all. Some were definitely not for me but, even those I could appreciate for the craftsmanship that obviously went into them. Baque is one that I really loved and like you I was disappointed it was no longer available by the time I tried it. We need to start a campaign to bring it back! Although I am happy to hear Sana will be coming out again soon, that was another one I liked. For now I will just keep enjoying my Pear & Olive.

  8. In response to your post I’ve just gone to the Slumberhouse website and ordered their
    “sample suite (2ml glass vials of sova, pear+olive, norne, jeke) $20” ! (plus $10 for postage to Australia)

    I have tried Norne already – and loved it’s deep, dark, mossy, mysteriousness – so I can’t wait to try more from this line. Pear+Olive in particular, because I’ve read so many positive blog mentions.

  9. I had a sample of this and I loved it but I didn’t realize it was a limited edition and when I went to finally buy it….it was gone… Needless to say I was very sad because I really wanted it. I will never wait that long to decide on a full bottle purchase again.

  10. I’m with Natalie on this one.

    From the time I heard about them for the first time I didn’t like the name. I know, it’s not serious but with literary dozens of new niche lines and thousands of perfumes released over the last several years one takes any sort of filtering – names, bottles, color of the perfume if you wish.

    So far I tried only Pear & Olive. Jurry is still out but I doubt it will be love for me. And recently I tend to spend more time, money and attention on those perfumes where I get an immediate “wow!” or at least “hmmm…” on the first sniff.

      Yes, there is TOO MUCH CHOICE!! I get that anything not perfect will relegate a house to the back of the line. Also, anything so different will be polarising, adds to the conversation. As have you lovely.
