Hello Vintage frag Hounds,

Recently I was lucky enough to find this beautiful perfume and bottle on Etsy, it was a complete bargain and I bought a few other things at the same time.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Bergamot, aldehide, peach, orange bloom, honeysuckle, orris
Heart: Rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, coriander, sensitive plant, tuberose, violet, geranium
Base: Sandalwood, vetiver, patchoulis, vanilla, musk

The box (shown in picture) looks scuffed and worn in real life and I think the fragrance has kept its fresh colour due to being encased in the refillable case: meaning it has suffered no light damage. Mum had Arpege at one point, I think it may have been a gift, and I remember loving her in it. This is the mist and aged so the scent is slightly different but WOW!!

The fizzy, sparkling, slightly unreal growl of Eau Arpege Mist is both lavish, grand and feline. Honeysuckle can take over everything on my skin and it goes very urinous quite often, here is skirts disgusting and is completely in tune with the fruit and citrus, maybe the iris keeps it in check with its cool rooty earthiness? I don’t know but you would never in today’s world of fragrance pick this as made for a daughter’s 30th birthday by her mother, who called in André Fraysse and his helper Paul Vacher back in 1927. Jeannie Lanvin even let her daughter choose the name, Arpege, for arpeggio: from my blog reading I find it was so named because an arpeggio is trickling notes like a cascade of sound rather than chords which is the way Arpege is said to flow. You’ll notice the picture above LANVIN on the box above, legend has it that it’s Jeannie and her daughter preparing for a ball.

If you want to read about the notes do please jump to further reading, parsing this little beauty is beyond me. I want you to know that it feels like I’m a movie star when I wear this beautiful vintage Arpege. The flowers, herbs, spices, woods and grasses all combine to maker an incredible statement, that feels both womanly and iconic. If you ever need a spine stiffener then Arpege will do it for you. Ramrod straight back with a head just floating on your neck and hips that could whip the washing with their sweep, swoosh and sashay. Movie star glamour instantly, even for me!

  2. Great story and info, Portia! I enjoy a whiff of well preserved vintage Arpege (the perfume) from time to time, as well as a sniff of My Sin. My favorite Lanvin is Spanish Geranium. I still have some of the EDT, in surprisingly good shape for its age.

    Many years ago my mother was given a bottle of the Geranium EDT. She favored Arpege so gave me free access to the SP which I used with a heavy hand. The scent of Spanish Geranium, as well as the characteristic Lanvin accord, are burned into my memory. In those days my application of fragrance was so liberal that one of my music comp professors actually took me aside on a hot spring day and advised me on the appropriate use of perfumes and colognes! I remember his exact words and often ignore them.

    • HA HA HA!! Imagine if you wore that much perfume today. The police would come over and have you for atmospheric pollution. I can just see you multi spritzing. Great story about your Mum and her Lanvins, that should be a post on APJ. You should fill it out a bit. We’ll do a day off reminiscences.
      While we were in Vienna recently we went to a very old perfume store, a Douglas but really old wooden paneling, a wonderful Guerlain station all in wood with bee bottles. Really fabulous. There was a senior lady there and the girl who was serving her put three big blasts down her decolletage, one on the back of her neck, twice on each wrist, then wrapped her scarf around her, put on her huge coat and sprayed about 5 or 6 times on the scarf, coat and hat before she let the beaming but PUNGENT lady leave. I was mesmerised and thrilled to see so much fragrance spritzed on one person. I think it was one of the Guerlain parfums in 125ml, the apricot one? Doesn’t matter, it was FAB U LOUS!

      • I’m looking forward to reminiscing on APJ! There are so many great and affordable vintage scents available in full bottles and decants that perfume junkies everywhere can easily afford a trip down memory lane.

      I am sad you dumped your old bottle, little did we know how the world was going to change. I threw away a half full bottle of Gucci Envy Men during a particularly excruciating break up. Forgiven myself? Not yet!

  7. I don’t think I’ve ever tried any of Lanvin’s perfumes (not on purpose, it just happened). I’m trying not to test too much vintage perfumes (most of them smell the same for me and I don’t want to create more heartaches for myself) but the way you described it makes me want to enter into the draw 😉

  11. Portia I’m a huge fan! I love the way you spin a phrase. You gotten me to try some perfumes I wouldn’t normally try like Tauer’s L’air du Desert Marocain. The Lanvin that I’m the most familiar w/is Oxygene from the late ’90s which l loved to death. I would love to sniff a shot of Arpege especially from your description. It sounds divine. If you ever get to Texas, I’d love to by you a cocktail!

      • I stumbled upon the Perfume Posse & one of your videos, which are fabulous btw! I luv your voice. From there I joined the AussiePossie. Are your friends in Austin? I love Oxygene, wore it for years & burnt myself out. I may have go back & try it again to see if I can wear it again. I’ve never tried to buy anything off Esty or EBay- to scared of getting burnt. I love discovering the different evolutions a perfume will go thur on me. What’s your favorite part of the Arpege? The beginning, middle, end or the whole rodeo?

        • That opening is so extreme compared to modern fragrances and as it lives on my skin there is a depth that I find missing in a lot of modern perfumery.
          As far as Etsy and eBay go I think I will do a post on the sellers I’ve favourited because they are reputable.
          I think Oxegene was deleted before they had to reformulate because even my latest bottle, under a year ago, smells as good as the original bottle that was finished.

  13. Promise Her anything……But give her Arpege. So the catchcry of Lanvin’s advertising of late 60s into 70s.{according to my mother}. I have smelt vintage Arpege since my Mother wore it as her sig. scent as I grew up. She alternated this with Worth’s Je Revien. Sadly the Arpege of today is although pretty ,not quite as lovely as I remember{although I have a couple minis and wear occ.} I follow you via Twitter ,Portia and would truly like it if Jin pulled my name from the little box.

      Many of our grandmothers and mothers were given Arpege because men knew the name and remembered the advertising. That’s why it’s so reasonable in the eBay & Etsy sellers still. There is SO MUCH hidden in those cupboards.

  17. I just caved and switched over to Bloglovin and it is great (not that I had any doubts, just lazy), which is how I follow now. I have to admit that I forget about readers and just have all my favorite blogs bookmarked and check them most days. I think a friend’s mother wore Arpege as I have a memory of the bottle on her vanity but I have no scent memory to accompany it. I would love to be entered in the draw. Also, summertime is not a great time for a Texas visit unless you enjoy melting, so keep procrastinating. To be fair, we do usually get about 2 weeks each of fall and spring and almost a month of sorta winter 😉
