Paying it Forward: (in) Puredistance Gold

This post is a part of a joint giveaway, held by Undina (Undina’s Looking Glass), Vanessa (Bonkers about Perfume ), Lucas (Chemist in the Bottle) and Portia (Australian Perfume Junkies)

From Undina: In this age of advertising in social networks and working through influencers, vloggers and instagrammers, it is hard to justify spending marketing resources on a handful of“old school” bloggers with quirky blogging styles and limited outreach via followers or organic search. A very few keep doing that through the years.
Puredistance is one brand that was extremely friendly and generous with bloggers. Late last year Puredistance sent a travel spray of their newest perfume Puredistance Gold. I tied and I liked Puredistance Gold.
We decided to share – to make sure it reaches more people.

Puredistance Gold

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Top: Italian green mandarin, Calabrian bergamot, La Réunion pink pepper, Moroccan rosemary, Madagascan clove
Heart: Indian jasmine absolute, Spanish cistus absolute, Moroccan geranium, Madagascar cinnamon absolute
Base: Honduras styrax, Laotian benzoin, Myrrh, Indonesian patchouli, Green madagascar vanilla, Venezuelan tonka bean absolute, Castoreum absolute, Haitian vetiver

A gloriously fizzy citrus opens, I say fizzy but not like a 21st century celebuscent. Here we have the lustre of golden dawn tempered by shadows of spices and the clarion call of white flowers. I make it sound overly dramatic, it’s not. Puredistance Gold is satin smooth and flawlessly blended.

The heart becomes a sensual incense. Yep, I never thought those words would become a pair. Here we have it. Incense, patchouli, vanilla are all tempered by resins and animalics. A light sweaty breathiness that underpins the heart and dry down, giving this unearthly beauty humanity.

If you are all about your fragrance being an introduction as or before you enter a room then I double you’ll be moved by Puredistance Gold. We are talking seriously refined understatement, yet so unusual that it is a statement of its own. It says to me, “I have no need of gauche display. My perfection and grace are enough. A perfect cover for our imperfect selves, how better to trick the world than smell like this”

Hey Hey APJ,

Last weeks Veil by Oliver + Co winners are MMKinPA, Verbenaluvvr, Greg and Fragrant Wanderer

Today we are talking about a re-release of the 2014 P Frapin & Cie favourite Nevermore. Totally reformulated to make it more approachable and saleable. It’s very easy to tell the difference between the original and modern because the modern juice is clear, like water. I was given the Press Bottle by Libertine Parfumerie at their seasonal update recently.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore—
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”
            Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
V8 The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

Nevermore by P Frapin & Cie

Anne-Sophie Behaghel

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Aldehydes, nutmeg, black pepper, rose, amber, atlas cedar, saffron

Nevermore is a queer bird. It opens like road base in the rain. The aldehydes, black pepper and maybe nutmeg/rose combo are like something dark, inky, wet and arctic. It’s like opening a brand new geometry set as a kid, the metallic and plastic smell so fresh and new.

The only thing I can compare it to (and they are not the same but have a similar scent feeling) is the later stages of Byredo Black Saffron. I repeat, not the same but they share a style.

Even so, this modern Nevermore is infinitely more wearable and approachable than my memory of the original.

Hey APJ lovers of new,

My mate Oliver Valverde got in touch recently to tell me about his newest release. He’s so sweet and genuinely excited about having something new to offer you all. This week a 30ml Press Bottle of Veil arrived to review and share with you guys. Isn’t that freaking cool?

Before we get to the fragrance though Oliver & Co is now ONLY selling through their website. Oliver has wrested back control of his business from the pressures of selling through retail outlets and is going it alone. That means he can offer better prices (we have already seen them drastically reduce) and FREE SHIPPING to the world if you spend over €160, less if in Europe. Currently the most expensive 50ml bottle he sells is €78! Isn’t that amazing. I really rate his work. It’s challenging and out there but smells wonderful.

Veil (Nebula 3) by Oliver & Co.

Oliver Valverde

Ginger, metallic rose, lemon and a sparkly bunch of something, something, somethings combine to create a fragrance quite different. Spacious, air altering, modern and a little bit weird. I get hints of salty seaweed and later a very modern patchouli just dirtied up a little bit. Veil is the fragrance Buck Rogers would have worn (obviously the space references have sent my mind down this path but now I’ve thought it, it remains unshakeable).

The sheer, unearthly heart and dry down are quite like the smell of an empty can of beetroot after you’ve given it a rinse when you are taking it to the recycle. Sharp, vegetal, pickle sweet and tinny. That’s about the best analogy I can bring you.

What do you do when you can’t smell? – Giveaway

Hey, hey APJ! How is everyone doing?

Let’s just get right to it and not beat around the bush here! I have no new perfume review, no old perfume review. As soon as it got colder, my lingering sinusitis (since July) exploded leaving me with no sense of smell and intense facial pain. I was first prescribed saline washes back in August. As that did not work, the doctor then prescribed cortisone. Only when I went back with excruciating facial pain did the doctor take a second look and finally prescribed a month of antibiotics and continued cortisone. Ugh…

What do you do when you can’t smell?
