So I’ve learned something about vintage fragrances recently. They are quite different to the original intention. Please don’t shut me down. I’m not saying they are bad, wrong, inferior or unworthy of your attention: they are super worthy. Even the most badly decomposing vintage fragrance can still give you a hint of the majesty once curled within. So the top notes are wonky, who cares? Those base notes made of real animals (and no I don’t condone the killing of animals for our vanity. I do think though that if those creatures are being murdered anyway that we should use every single bit of them, even the fragrant parts for our scents) last forever and ten minutes into the ride you are coasting on a wave of deep furry burnished beauty unattainable today.

Top: Bergamot, Green leaves
Heart: Amaryllis, Boronia, Lilac, Jasmine, Lily, Lily-of-the-valley, Rosemary, Ylang-ylang

Recently I grabbed a bottle of vintage Diorissimo EdC. It came fully and perfectly preserved in its original cellophane wrapping, flawless. When I opened it, a 26ml splash, the juice was crystal clear and only slightly coloured, even less than the colour of Milly-la-Foret. I think the lid on a splash lets zero air in, unlike a spritz, because this is the most perfectly preserved version of Diorissimo of any age that I’ve smelled. Ainslie Walker and I were trying it yesterday because she is writing the Miu-Miu fragrance currently and she wanted to be able to compare the treatments of lily of the valley. We were both seriously enraptured by this perfectly demure dirty slut scent. Unbelieveable that it was the fragrance of young wealthy girls everywhere.

Lily of the valley and civet, frankly I’m a little surprised not to see ambergris in the accord list. The rest of the flowers are a beautiful bouquet with some fresh greenery that has still the soft green sappy scent of torn leaves.

  2. Vintage Diorissimo. That’s the dream. Portia, you have hit the motherlode!

    Why? Hard to say. When I was a child (here in the U.S. May 1st is nothing to do with the workers) we used to observe May Day by picking flowers for our mothers. We would make a paper cone basket with a little handle out of construction paper at school and pick flowers on our way home. There were violets and bluebells, but it was the lilies of the valley that gave the bouquets their fragrance. I think that they bring back childish innocence, the memory of spring, the promise of summer …

    Diorissimo was my very first experience of lily of the valley. No other lily of the valley has ever quite compared. When I was twelve or so my mother tried to keep me away from her Diorissimo by buying me a bottle of Coty’s Muguet de Bois. While I loved the Coty, I kept spritzing her Dior on the sly. I still have an old bottle of Diorissimo. It has lost a lot over the years. I have a good memory for this scent and can fill in the gaps but would love to smell it well preserved. Today I have to say that my all time favorite Dior is Hypnotic Poison. I have several bottles beginning with the 1998 original. It is the unmistakable plumy fruitiness that keeps me coming back for more of this one in all its loud iterations. I follow by e-mail and Bloglovin.

    Fav Dior is Diorissimo. The most elegant lily of the valley fragrance that reminds me of Spring. That houndtooth box is gorgeous btw!

  11. I loved the mossy, rich flowers of Miss Dior, but my real love was Diorling, more complex, richer (how is that possible?), more grown up, best with furs and leather gloves, frosty cold nights.   13. I have only had the pleasure of smelling original Miss Dior. About the present Miss Dior, Luca Turin has this to say ” dry, pinched, aldehydic chypre, ageless in a prematurely wrinkled way, and makes me think of pursed, painted lips hissing disparaging bon mots.”

    Aaahhh……Dior Dior. Where do I start? Diorissimo? Adore it. Diorella? Yup. Eau Savage? Check. Patchouli Imperial? Oh god…love……and on and on and on…..why do I love them all? Well, because they’re fantastic and have weathered the test of time.

    Favourite Dior is vintage Diorella. By vintage I mean anywhere from the early 80′ to the late 90’s. I first smelled it on a co-worker, who wouldn’t reveal the name. A couple of years later when I was leaving for the “big” city I begged again and she told me, Diorella. So at the one department store that carried Dior, I did a Goldilocks test: Miss Dior (a bit too much for me at the time); Diorissimo (I love lily of the valley, but a little prettier than I was looking for); and finally the Diorella (just right!). Bergamot glory and that slightly past its prime melon, with beautiful greenness, and patchouli and oakmoss in the drydown. What’s not to love?

  17. I follow by email, right now my favorite is Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet, because I feel as if I have stepped into my Grandmothers Garden each time I wear it. Yet without the innocence of being a young woman again, it has a sexy edge to it. It reminds me of a Brittany Spears song, No longer a Girl, not yet a Woman. Not sure if I have that title quite correct, but it has that caught in the moment just before you step into the next phase of your life, the excitement, the mystery of the unknown, feeling as if you are going to explode if something doesn’t happen soon…..if that makes sense to you…LOL

    Favorite Dior is Tendre Poison Vintage the one in the “skinny” green bottle before it was reformulated and later discontinued.

    There are many Dior’s fabulous perfumes I love. Diorissimo is the one I appreciate the most although I wear it seldom. Sometimes I simply like to sniff it. Eau Sauvage was one the first fragrances I bought for myself. I still think it was a weird ( I was 14-15) but a great decision. I love vintage Eau Sauvage Extreme, too. Diorella is another big love of mine, together with Jules. They are very expensive pleasures today. My love for Poison is a consequence of our hobby, although I remembered Poison as the most notable perfume in the mid-80’s. I also love Dune. Many years ago a friend’s mother gave me a bottle, she rated it as a male fragrance. Good for me. I spent almost all of it. A few milliliters left. I’m a huge fan of Fahrenheit. My last 200 ml bottle is from 2006. Reformulations, including my current bottle, work for me. La Collection Couturier Perfumeur is fine, but not spectacular. I like Patchouli Imperial, Ambre Nuit, and Oud Ispahan. F. Kurkdjian’s Eau Noire is my favorite, but I have not tried the entire collection.
    I think you’re right about an excellent lid on old Dior’s splashes. My 10 ml splash of Diorissimo EDT have the same one. It is in excellent, preserved condition.

  25. Hi Portia, I wear Miss Dior Le Parfume and I love the whole Les Creations of Monsieur Dior series although I haven’t had the chance to try any of these in vintage. My favourite Dior, in fact my favourite perfume, is Dune. It’s like the taste of salty skin beside a campfire on a beach at night. It’s warm and comforting.

  26. i have esprit de parfum of diorissimo and it is too strong..i would def. like to try more airy versions of diorissimo..my favorite dior remains original dioressence in esprit de parfum formula…but I also cannot ignore original Eau Sauvage and original Dior Homme with silver tube…Dior is def. one of my fav. houses in terms of perfumes though the latest Sauvage seems a disappointment. i follow APJ through email.

With my limited Dior experience, I love the everyday wearability of Dior The One, the Rose is a bit too sweet for my liking. I started following this blog after I stumbled across your review of Shay & Blue Salted Caramel and down the rabbit hole we gooooo.

  31. My favorite Diors are Dune and Feve Delicieuse; most of the modern versions have not impressed me, and I’d love to smell vintage Dioressence especially.   32. Unlike so many of the contributors here, I’m what could be described as a vintage Dior perfume novice! The first Dior I owned was Dolce Vita, which I bought for myself after saving up money from my after-school job back in the ’90s (maybe it counts as vintage now, as I still have some left from that first bottle?!). I have many fond memories associated with it, and, clichéd as it sounds, it really does lift my mood when I wear it – no doubt due in large part to nostalgia! But, unlike some other frags of my teenage years, which shall remain nameless, this one still speaks to me and, I think, stands up to this day – so I’m pretty sure it’s not *all* down to my wearing rose-coloured glasses 🙂
