Recently I found on the eBay a Joy parfum black snuff bottle, still sealed with string and baudruche (animal intestine seal then, onion skin now) intact and was lucky enough that no one else saw it, well there were two other bids and they were small. I got my perfect vintage sealed beauty for about the cost for 2 people to eat a mid sized meal at McDonalds, including shipping. Oh happy day.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:

Thick, heavy, oily and sparkly fruity floral with a susurrus of freshly cut greenery. A minute in and suddenly there is air, the fragrance breathes and as it does fresh sliced over ripe peach stands above the white flowers before being engulfed by them. The rose is ever present and waltzes through bolstering and linking the fragrance, giving it a richness, working with peach and greenery to create an almost photo realistic rose and then it’s all gone into the heady melange that makes Joy so fabulous, and joyous.

Once I’m past this point Joy becomes itself only, parsing it and cutting it into pieces feels like a very undignified way to treat such a fragrance. What I do now and for the rest of the ride is float on it, drift with one of perfumeries most enduring and seamless creations. The heart of Joy is a mesmerising dream of sumptuous rooms, rich parties, long pearl necklaces, hand finished tailored suits, granite entryways and stainless steel. If ever a fragrance felt like something a protagonist in a novel would wear Joy feels like a perfect fit for Ayn Rand’s lead character in Atlas Shrugged, Dagny Taggart.

I used to wear Joy, the parfum, no less, when I was in college. The advertisers billed it as “The most expensive perfume in the world,” which always struck me as a little vulgar. No matter. It wasn’t so expensive that a college student living at home, with a little scrimping and saving, couldn’t acquire some. This is yet another of the great fragrances I wore back in the 70’s that I wish I’d stockpiled.

Oooh 1929, really? I bet this smells lush. I have never tried a vintage like this but I bet it would have the ability to make me look just like Jean Harlow wearing fur. Hah!

I am going to tell you a nonperfume joy story: This year, I lost my job, and my father died. I thought I was at a low this summer. Then, I went to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in August, got my health back and started back to dance classes and trail riding, started a wonderful new job in September and fell in love in October. That is why I want to wear Joy: to match my mood. I need to wear a perfume called Blessed, too.

1929 Joy – oh my gosh – I’m sure that is some baby! I last had the pleasure of trying this gorgeous perfume in New York in 2009 when my life was full of ‘love’ joy! Perhaps i should have bought it as a few years later my personal joy (read ‘love’) was taken away! Not that some perfume would make up for that…. but there you go… you did ask for our ‘joy’ stories! 🙂 If i win, great, if i don’t, well then at least someone else will gain a little joy. x

I remember my sister was really fascinated with Joy back in 1990s..she is older than me but we were all teenagers back then…she had heard Joy is the costliest perfume and she just wondered how such an expensive perfume may smell like…I want to try Joy obviously to see how the Joy of yesteryears is different from today.i follow APJ through email.

I swooned a little when I saw this giveaway (“Quick, fetch the smelling salts….no wait, better yet, some vintage Joy!”). I first made acquaintance with Joy in 1986 when I was duty free shopping prior to my first overseas trip. I was in my twenties and not, I’m sure, the target audience for Joy parfum but I decided to try it, mostly out of curiosity but also because duty free was the only way I could have afforded something like that ( the equivalent of half a week’s wages). Love at first sniff, totally blown away, I thought it was the elixir of the gods and found it perplexing that others were less enthused, especially my mother ( a Madame Rochas devotee). I eked out my little ribbed bottle for years, still have it – though empty – and mourned that Joy disappeared from sale sometime in the early 90s. I have the current version, not bad at all but lacking in the base note department, and bought a pre-reform bottle last year. But to smell the true vintage and compare, oh that would be grand! I’ve never tried Joy in its vintage formulation. It must be old school perfume. Civet and jasmine used in old perfumes make miracles.

I follow by e mail.Developed the love and appreciation for perfume from my mom.What springs to mind was her aversion to Joy of which it was common knowledge,its legendary hefty price tag and considered the most expensive perfume in the world.I would love to try it even more than ever to see why she disliked it so.She also hated Tea Rose so maybe she does not like the smell of roses.

Thank you for your beautiful review. I have a confession to make. I have a little box of Joy and its flankers in miniature which I purchased for myself last year. Even the box exudes luxury and indulgence. And I have not opened a single bottle! I feel like I have to be beautifully groomed just to sample one of them. Now I’m wondering if the sampling might encourage me to become beautifully groomed…
I would love to try vintage Joy and be able to compare it to the current formulation.

Many many years ago I worked with a Grande Dame who wafted around in a cloud of Joy. While the rest of us were pretty average, she arrived at work each day immaculately turned out – her white hair coiffed to perfection, silk stockings caressing her slender ankles, rings adorning her slender pale, and of course, her ubiquitous red lipstick. All this in the small Florist department of an old time Departmental Store!
A perfect life lesson of wonderful originality in an average world….

I would love to try some vintage Joy. I first came across this perfume about 3 years ago, reading a book about famous perfumes by Michael Edwards. Not only did Joy sound exquisite lovely, but I also realised that many of the featured notes were the same notes that I had mixed into a little aromatherapy perfume that I made for myself…. and I also called it Joy (having never heard of the original)! So I would love to smell the original 🙂 I follow by email.

My grandmother wore Joy in the 70s and early 80s for special occations. She would tell us it was the most expensive perfume in the world, so in fact I never tried it on skin back then.It would be super to try a few drops of vintage Joy now. Scent really brings back memories.I follow by email.

I just watched a handful of your videos. I adore you!!!!
This perfume is one that I love, because not only does it smell heavenly, it reminds me of my mom. This was her favorite perfume. When my parents were married, my dad would always bring her back a bottle. (He was in the air force, and went overseas a lot) I guess there was a time that you could not get it in the states easily. (I can definitely not know what I am talking about)
Anyway,
I loved that beautiful black bottle with the red top, as I was a kid. I don’t know what my mom was thinking at this time, but for some strange reason, she put a precious bottle in the glove box in the car, and guess what, it spilled. Yeah
She was utterly upset, we could even say devistated at the time, but our car smelled wonderful for ever it seemed.
I dab a bit on, when I miss her (she passed away when I was 15), and it always calms me. Even though it is not “my scent” I love it dearly.
