Hi there APJ,

Recently Scott and I went to visit my mate Bronwyn of Gascoigne & King (more on their fabulous Gascoigne & King candles soon) who is the Australian importer of Etat Libre d’Orange. This is a long overdue catch up and we are both so busy that time has flown. As always she is the most ridiculously generous girl in the world and threw a bunch of samples at us. So I’m passing them on to you, dear reader.

Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre by Etat Libre d`Orange 2015

Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre by Quentin Bisch

Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre FragranticaFragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Geosmin, island musk, pepperwood, petalia, rose, patchouli, ambrosian

Roses and woods, earth and wet leaves, ashes, cold air, the after bite tingle of crunching a peppercorn in your mouth. In the 1990/2000s some ingredient in Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre (who the f*#k named this?) was extremely popular in the gym. It has always struck me as a muscular piece of the puzzle and Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre has it in spades. Part incense, charred wood and man sweat, it’s sexy as anything and takes me straight back to gyms, dates, dancing and sexual encounters of those years. Big smile here. Happy memories and laugh out loud recollections that I haven’t explored in years.

Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre is pretty linear, it does progress but through the opening fireworks at a slower pace, in rotation. Sillage is good, projection moderate.

Tough choice. I like them all but they are not LOVE, FB-worthy to me. My faves I think are Putain and Jasmin et Cigarette. I like skanky.

  5. You know, all the ELdO names are bizarre! My favorite, of the few I’ve sniffed, is la Fin du Monde. I follow by e-mail!

  7. LOL I had to laugh when I saw the name of the perfume, not because I understand the meaning but because it’s again something that perfumistas will shorten to Hermann, as you already did. It’s so funny that most perfumes have French names and for the not-French-speaking-people it’s so hard to pronounce them. I bet that mostly it sounds silly when we do it.
Of the ELDO scents I’ve tried so far I like The Afternoon of a Faun and Fat Electrician. Remarkable People is high on my to-try list.

  8. I fell hard for Putain des Palaces last winter, going from sample to full bottle in record time. Now that it’s summer in the US, I put it away. Maybe I’ll try it on a really hot day, just to see what happens!
I have been intrigued by Hermann ever since I read the Candy Perfume Boy’s review a month or two ago.
I follow by email and also on Twitter. Thanks for the draw. I would love to win this one.

  10. Fun! I follow via E-mail and visit almost every day 🙂

My favorite ELDO is ‘Like this’ by Tilda swinton. It’s such a cosy pumpkin fall/cold weather scent. ELDO being such an ‘edgy’ “sexy” house, this scent is very unlike them.

  11. My favourite ELdO fragrance is certainly Tom of Finland; after all, they put a picture of me on the box. As far as one that intrigues me, I’d have to say Secretions Magnifiques; I have a sample of that, but I’ve never dared to wear it. I just can’t think of an appropriate scenario for it.

  13. Hello APJ’ers!
I follow via emails. I’ve had a sniff of Secretions Magnifique and almost thew up! It was all Luka Turnip’s fault (my son calls him that to tease). I read that in a recent interview he’s had second thoughts about the whole thing. Now he tells us!

  14. I’ve been intrigued by Hermann etc. (seriously?! what were they thinking) since I first read about it. I mean, I love that it comes from a Victor Hugo poem, I love that it is about the shadow of someone beside you, but really. Favourite ELdOs – Jasmin et Cigarette and Fat Electrician. I follow by email.

  15. I sampled a few of these, mostly because of the quirky names. I do like the Putain one though.

  16. Uhumm….Herman doesn’t sound like ‘he’ appeals to me much. However, I’m keen to try Remarkable People’
Tom of Finland floats my boat, and SM floats my boat to have a laugh.

I recently tried Like This, and I liked it a lot, but so far my go-to ELdO is Putain des Palaces! I haven’t sniffed much of the range, and I am mostly intrigued by Secretions Magnifiques (but of course!!!), La Fin du Monde and The Afternoon of a Faun!
I follow by email, on FB and Google +.
