Hi there APJ,
Something new from YSL! Once upon a time that would be the cue for great rejoicing and whispers of intrigue. Now the only way I know about it is because they have released their ad and it came up on my YouTube.
They are selling it as a modern chypre and while I applaud their audacity still I think I will reserve judgement till I can get my nose on some.
Mon Paris by Yves Saint Laurent 2016
Mon Paris by Olivier Cresp, Harry Fremont and Dora Baghriche-Arnaud
Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Calabria bergamot, strawberry, raspberry, pear
Heart: Datura flower, peony, Chinese and Sambac jasmine, orange blossom.
Base: White musk (three types of it), ambroxan, patchouli (Indonesia and Guatemala)
Please enjoy the video. I think it’s gorgeous. What do you think?

Whatever it is, based on the notes it’s not a chypre unless all contemporary fruity-florals are now called “chypres” and ambroxan is the new “oakmoss”. I will also reserve judgment until I’ve smelled it.

Ellen,
You & I are on the same page here. They are using patchouli as a moss replacement in modern perfumery but it just doesn’t have the same furry kick. I think it’s part of the reason oud has become so popular, as a furry baseline note.

Once upon a time that would be the cue for great rejoicing but now it tends to be a cue for mass eye-rolling. Will it sink like Parisienne? Where will it fit in the matrix of Coco Mad, Miss Dior (Cherie, as was), Poison Girl, Chance and all its flankers, Black Opium, LPRN – all of them desperate to capture and keep the 20-something market. Why does it have to look like a Victoria’s Secret bottle? (‘Paris Sexy Little Tease Noire’ anyone?) Aw geez. Pass me the Shalimar.
Nice ad though.

Hey there AnneMarieC,
BUM! I thought the bottle was cool, what a shame it’s derivative.
Yes, the arena seems to be flooded. I wonder if this one will stay?

Hopefully I’ll like the bottle better for real, when I see it. ☺

I think I love the good old Paris too much to fall for Mon Paris. Is it supposed to be a flanker?
Judging by the video Mon Paris is definitely aiming for the younger customers…

Hi there Neva,
I hadn’t even thought it might be a flanker but I think you’re right. Maybe cousin rather than sister.
