Good Day APJ

It has been chipmunk on crack mode the last couple of weeks. I am in the process of developing and selling vegan brownies and blondies, we have a trial run going on, and a new store has opened, one of the chain that offers my cookies. Absolute fun but hectic.

Val the CQ´S Random Fragrant Ramblings

CHANEL Boy, MFK Petit Matin and Grand Soir and a trip to London

CHANEL BOY EdP by Olivier Polge 2016

It opens with the radiant and gleaming brilliance of grapefruit and lemon wrapped in a muted lavender. The blend is very Chanel, the
lavender short lived. As these more volatile components evaporate, a sweet rose arises, perhaps a little orange blossom, and it effortlessly glides into a warm and a delectable heliotrope, swirling with sandalwood and musks. This is the first EdP in the Exclusifs collection and it does stay the course for a good twelve hours on my skin. Fab. I bought a bottle.

LONDON – A Conclave Of Bloggers

I fly to London tomorrow and am combining a trip round London with more than twenty bloggers and perfumers with a visit to my family. So excited to see everyone. Tara from A Bottled Rose is meeting me on the day that I arrive. We`ll fit a shifty sniff in, go on a red lipstick crusade, lunch together and drop into Bloom Perfumery to deliver some cookies. I don´t really have a sniff list but will take a look at the Grandifloras, and Le Galop from Hermès. Stay tuned to find out how it all went.

MFK Sample GIVEAWAY

The two new fragrances from Maison Francis Kurkdjian were on my London list, but I came across them in Linz yesterday. I tried both on paper and the lovely SA gave me carded samples of each one, Petit Matin and Grand Soir. I can get samples anytime I want but I know not everyone can. The Petit Matin is a delicious creamy lemon floral number and the Grand Soir is a kill you with vanilla benzoin and tonka bean number.

Drop me your thoughts on any of today’s randomness and you are in the draw. I will be extremely fast at sending them out because they are already prepared! Whoohoo. I hate decanting with a passion.

  1. Hey Val,
    DNEM
I LOVE BOY! It’s the easiest thing to spritz and go, wears comfortably, has distinct stages and never overwhelms. YUM

Oh, London! I went for the first time last September for four days. Not enough. I planned to go back this year for a week but some medical bills made that impossible. I spent four hours in the fragrance department and Guerlain boutique at Herrods. I went to Bloom but they were closed! I didn’t make it to all the used bookstores on Charing Cross or to the museums/Tates. I loved seeing a play at The Globe. Best Shakespearian company anywhere. Enjoy.

  3. Oooh, jealous of your trip to London! I’m hoping to visit next year and go nuts in Bloom and Harrods etc. I would love to try Boy. Have a fantastic, scent-sational time. Follow by email. 🙂

  4. Val, your descriptions of the MFK samples sound luscious enough that I now want to try them. I follow by e-mail. I’ve replaced your ors with ands and will now submit my opinion on all of your questions.

I don’t know much about the perfume scene in London, but my favorite thing is the foooooood! Best Indian food outside of India (I’m ethnically Indian), not to mention their marvelous and hearty breakfasts and fish and chips and pies and bangers and mash. And of course the museums are wonderful. I’m going back to London in a couple weeks myself! I can’t wait. Have fun!

While I appreciate the challenge faced by vegan bakers to make the treats taste as delicious as the real thing, I am benignly anti-vegan. If I needed to make a dessert for a vegan, I’d probably just go with a fruit salad.

I am dying to try Boy! I hear so many wonderful things about it! On another note, no MFK has made it onto my must-buy list. They’re all quite lovely, but remarkably meh. Gorgeous bottles, though.

  5. Oh thanks for creating more lemmings!
I want to try Boy and both the MFKs quite badly. I think I may be a Chanel ho.
But I also bought the rather large vat of MFK Cologne pour le Soir.

  6. I’m not vegan (or vegetarian for that matter) but I admire the dedication involved. I also have quite a few friends with FODMAP diets or other sensitivities. All of the alternative products and recipes available are quite ingenious – though some are tastier than others. There is a vegan “cheese” called Cheezly that is especially morish!

  7. London and perfume and cookies. And fabulous fragrance fiends. I wish there was a word that captured the feeling of being super-jealous but in a totally happy excited supportive way. Coz that’s how I feel. 🙂

The Grandifloras are interesting. I have Sandrine & wear it a fair bit in summer. I haven’t tried the new one yet.

Lots of love, have a wonderful trip!!

  8. I bake gluten- and dairy-free, but not vegan. I actually prefer eggy recipes, because gluten-free baked goods tend to be quite crumbly. I have had a lot of success with brownie and blondie recipes, but I try not to make them very often, because of my tendency to eat half the pan in one evening. My favorite MFK perfume thus far is APOM Elixir, a beautiful orange blossom with some vanilla in the base. Have a wonderful time in London!

(I follow with Bloglovin, but I have no idea if my Gravatar email is the same. I’ve tried to add my own image, and been told both that my name was already being used, and that there is no account with my name.)

  9. Never tried any of MFK fragrances, heard good and positive reviews about MFK fragrances.
For fragrance wandering, please check the UK based perfumes from BeauFort, Signature Fragrances, Grossmith, Abdul Karim Al Faransi, Ex Idolo, Boadicea the Victorious, Thameen, Ormonde Jayne and the latest perfumes launched in 2016 from Art de Parfum.
I’ll say try to get hands on full bottle of Le Labo Poivre 23 London or you’ll wait for next year to buy.
Thanks for the giveaway, would love to win

  11. I love all the buttery fatty goodness in non vegan baking! Nom nom nom but I’m sure there are vegan treats out there that taste yummy too- just haven’t come across it.
I’ve been loving MFK body lotions lately for days when I’m at home and don’t want the full effect of a perfume.
Enjoy your adventures and share with us your fav red lipstick finds! Stila liquid lipstick I think it’s called in ‘fiery’ is my new find and I love it! 😀

  12. I follow by email. Both of the MFKs appeal. How could they not? I’ve never tried the Chanel Boy so I can’t comment, though it sounds lovely, and I’ll try any kind of cooking. You’re getting excellent London advice from those in the know. Sadly, I cannot help. Thanks for the giveaway.

  13. Hi Val,

DNEM – even though the MFKs look lovely. I just wanted to comment on the vegan brownies and blondies.

Of necessity I have been baking vegan for awhile, as I have a moderate egg allergy and am gluten intolerant. I have used soaked, ground chia and flax seeds as a substitute for the binding quality of egg and unsweetened apple sauce for moisture. I’ve also tried a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar as a leavening agent with mixed results. I can’t say that I like to bake vegan or gluten free, but I have become used to it. I will generally eat and enjoy whatever is in front of me – vegan , gluten free or not – and suffer later.

  14. Hey Val! So glad you love Boy! I do to and am putting it in my top 10 of 2016! It was one of my go-to’s all summer long. Damn, I’m hooked. Next tim it’s the BIG bottle for me. I also adore Grand Soir and will have a bottle on my doorstep very soon, I suspect it’ll get lots of use over the holidays, such a great gourmand! So DNEM, since I’m already neck-deep in perfume, and so glad someone else will get to experience these three.

So I had my first vegan brownie last weekend. It was from our island mostly organic bakery and it was terrific! Warmed up, it reminded me of the Katherine Hepburn brownie, but denser and fuller somehow, allowing to chocolate to really step forward!

Have a fab time in London, how could you not, right? Xoxo

  15. Hello,
I got to try Boy and feel like I wrote a prescription for a custom personal fragrance. My thoughts are that it’s unisex, but I don’t really care.
It’s definitely one of my top five of all time.
    I follow via e-mail.
    Thank you!!!

  16. I haven’t tried Boy yet, since only the most usual scents from Chanel are available here. I tried MFK Absolue pour le soir and also MFK Amyris. Both are elegant scents, but not on my list of wanted FBs. The samples sound intersting, I love tonka bean for the colder season.

I bake vegan because I have food intolerances and refuse to suffer. I love cakes, but have yet to find a good vegan brownie (crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside without being too dense). I guess you must have done some experimenting to get a good result!

I am now waiting for a few Vero Kern samples from StC,hoping I will find them good after reading so much about her work.

    I follow by e-mail.

  18. Hello Val, and thank you for sharing your fragrant ramblings. Delightful to read, and I enjoyed the photo of the armadillo in the oven. Ha!

I have not smelled Chanel Boy yet as he seems to be eluding me at every turn. I have been to the perfume counters several times and left without seeing him. I would like a fragrance with lavender in my life, so I continue my pursuit.

I hope your travels in London will be a delight for you and that more of your musings will be shared very soon here at the always-wonderful APJ. I look forward to your next post as I follow APJ via email.

  19. G’day Val….What a great trip you have planned for London. I’m especially intrigued by your ‘red lipstick crusade’ because gosh isn’t it difficult to find the correct ‘red’? Please write a blog about this!!! I have had a carded sample of the Silk Oud by MFK and loved it. You simply MUST sniff out the Jasmine by Grandiflora.
I follow via email Twitter and Facebook, so all bases covered. Thanks for the opp to try these new scents.

  21. I follow by email! I have read a few reviews of Boy but haven’t tried it, because I was worried about the lavender. Your description of the brevity of the lavender makes me a little more curious to try it! Have fun in London 🙂

  22. I’ve never tried vegan cookies but I suppose I’d devour them as well. Nothing can stop me as long as they are sweet.
I’d love to try the MFK scents. I know only Aqua Vitae and I’ll surely buy a FB of the intense version the next time I’m in Kastner & Ohler in Graz. The combination of green, woody and powdery was absolutely made for me.
    Enjoy your trip to London!

  23. Hi Val 🙂

I haven’t done all that much vegan baking myself, but I definitely am experienced in helping to test (ie stuff my face) with the amazing things others have produced. Your goodies look scrumptious! I hope the trial run is coming along well. Have a great time in London, and thanks for the draw; I follow by email.
