Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss by Estée Lauder 2016

Hey Hey Scent Hounds,

So let’s start right away by understanding that this is neither made for nor expected to be a big hit with perfumistas. I love the original Modern Muse, it’s got a really lovely thing going on and I have a couple of mates that now name it their warm weather signature scent. Hugging someone in the original Modern Muse is delightful.

Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss by Estée Lauder 2016

Fragrantica

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Mandarin, Black cherry, Rosa centifolia, Pink pepper, Carrot seed, Vinyl accord, Jasmine absolute, Styrax, Labdanum, Saffron, Patchouli, Vanilla

Firstly, let’s talk about this red & gold bottle with the plastic bow. It’s fun, I love the colour combo and also love that Estee Lauder took a chance on a shape not svelte, luxe or refined. Here we have a silly bottle. Somehow though it works, an irreverent swipe at all the conformity that the big brands and even they themselves have been doing. Bravo for design frippery.

Hefty sheer and sweet. You know how diet drinks have a weird aftertaste that people become addicted to? Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss is like a cheap diet cherry cola. The freaky thing is that for all this 100% natural feeling scent, it works. It fizzes and has a sticky, glutinous appeal. The vinyl accord is warm and worn. The base ends up a sweet resinous faux-chouli with the diet cola accord and last for AGES, following me around all day and night. It goes so long that I get a little bored.

What Guerlain does with cherries is sweet but still maintains an air of sophistication, Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss wears a similar fashion but a year later and from Target. YET, worn with such confidence, youth and joy that you hardly notice how crap it looks till you see comparison photos. I will admit to you right here and now that I am madly in love with this frivolous funster. I bought myself 30ml and one of my dear girlfriends 50ml. She loves it too.

  1. G’day! I have to admit I’ve gone off Lauder scents a bit. I need to distance myself from the fact they have a surly one of the K family members as a face for the company. That has put me off trying them. Childish, I know, but I don’t watch films if certain actors are in them. I will challenge myself and try them this weekend. All in the same of personal growth.

    • HA! Kate, you’re hilarious.
You can be as grumpy as you like about them using any of the Jenner/Kardashian clan. They all make me wonder about modern life and values.

    • Kate I agree, I was rather surprised they chose the pretty but trashy Jenner girl to front their fragrance when The House of Lauder used to have more sophisticated personalities promoting their scents. I feel though they associated her vivacious and wild side with the stunning red ( and leather ) of Le Rouge Gloss. Otherwise why would she be chosen?

  2. I have not and may never try it because I hate the kardashians from the deepest core of my heart due to their invaluable contributions to the dumbing down of the society!

    • Yep. I hear you Fazal. Though anyone who follows them chooses to be dumbed down, it can only sell as long as there’s an audience.

      • They are def. marketable, I cannot deny that. But even a buffoon like Trump could find a big enough voters market to become President 🙂

    • Heya Terri-Anne,
Why haven’t we seen each other in ages. We need a catch up please.

  3. I rarely try new mainstream perfumes – only if I have absolutely nothing else to try. But this isn’t why I’m commenting. I want to say that the second picture (with the model) looks creepy to me: her pose and shadows remind me of a spider, so the only inspiration I get from it is to go for my sleeper 😉

    • O M G Undina. It’s so spiderish. GAK! Very unsettling shot now you mention it. All black widow.

    • Hey Lillian,
Yeah, the original is the best for me too but this is nice in a totally different way.

  4. Dear Portia, up to the time Le Rouge Gloss was introduced, the only Modern Muse I would wear was Chic as that opening and lingering hot pepper (which stings the nose like nobody’s business) just made me high. I still have my Modern Muse Chic and love it for a quick fix uplifter when I am feeling lethargic or down! As for Le Rouge Gloss, I had already resolved to get the coffret or the bottle in the leathered zip case the moment I tested it, the leather vinyl vibe makes it so mysterious. But aha, why buy now when one can wait for Myer’s GWP offer in order to get a freebie gift at the same time, and use those gift vouchers. Le Rouge Gloss will always be there and who knows the price may drop now that the blue Nuit one is out !

    • Good thinking Hage,
I got mine on special at a Chemist Warehouse. The prices are definitely going to go down.

  5. Saw this on flash sale and tried it on my right wrist today, and there is a certain something to the sillage. But I also tried Azuree on my left arm, and I think that amps up the leather in the way I want. If I bought Le Rouge Gloss, I’d have to mix a little Bandit into it 😉 Do you know of a more hardcore cherry leather perfume?

(Youth Dew on the right arm and Pleasures on the left wrist are contributing nothing to the mix besides liquid handsoap and sweaty face powder. These sampling smellanges can be pretty intense.)
