Hermès: Summer of Hermessences!

Hey there APJ! How is everyone doing?

Summer is my absolute favorite season. The long bright sunny days full of warmth hitting every pore of my body make my heart pulsate with pure joy. Barefoot feet, leisurely days by the pool side, lazy mornings sleeping in and days where I can decide on a whim or fancy what to do take years of stress and weight off of my shoulders. This is cherished time with my son who enjoys summer as much as or if not more than I do.

Hermès: Summer of Hermessences!

Moving to Basel has been a revelation – truly! I was sorely mistaken thinking that I would be living through chilly summers and snowy winters. Little did I know that Basel has the mildest climate in the country! In a way I joke and say I feel cheated as I am not getting the full Swiss experience here of snow and sleds. Ha! Basel has given me the simple luxury of heat and sunshine, breathing with ease and childhood memories again. The only difference is that we have mountains and lakes which still give me a Mediterranean vibe with the wide boulevards and palm trees. Oh and one way that I know I am living in Switzerland is that the pool water is so frigid that it feels as if the nearest glacier melted into it! My Argentine blood freezes as soon as my big toe touches the water.

This summer in particular has been quite hot and humid at times and generally full of sunshine. With that came a deep desire to wear pretty much one house for 3 months. Before summer went into full swing I headed over go Hermes and bought myself four 15 ml bottles from the Hermessence line. I came home with Cuir d’Ange, Iris Ukiyoé, Myrrhe Églantine and Osmanthe Yunnan.

Cuir d’Ange

Cuir d’Ange never felt quite right in Rotterdam. But here, in this dry heat it blooms. Quite surprisingly, Cuir d’Ange has become more floral and tenacious here in Switzerland. The violets are almost tactile together with the suede accord. I adore Cuir d’Ange now.

Iris Ukiyoé

Iris Ukiyoé is one that does not get much love on the blogs, but I find its ethereal beauty perfect for those warm summer evenings. The iris floats on a bed of flowers and musks creating imagery of large white clouds passing by on a summer day. I have already used up a full bottle and now have a small one to tie me over. Obviously I love this.

Myrrhe Églantine

Myrrhe Églantine is a new love affair. This rose perfume is complex and the longevity is stellar. It instantly makes me smile and keeps me smelling fabulous all day long. I have already gone through two 15 ml bottles. Perhaps I should buy some more.

Osmanthe Yunnan

Osmanthe Yunnan is all about delicate osmanthus petals gently infused in a delicate white or green tea. Many years ago I used to drink an osmanthus oolong which was sunshine in a cup every morning. I have worn Osmanthe Yunnan for years, always replenishing my empty bottles.

It has been a wonderful summer season of perfumes, and having said that I am looking forward to autumn and wearing perfume which keeps me warm and cozy.

  1. I wear fragrances all year long based on mood not season. I wear florals in winter and ambers and ouds in summer if I feel like it. I do find that I wear my Annick Goutals more in the spring though. Those spring florals call to me.

    • Hiya Portia, you may actually loathe the seasonal idea. I find it somewhat comforting. And as you mentioned I get to bring out perfumes that have been neglected. Let me know how it goes.

  4. I do seasons with a few for sure. . Cuir de Lancôme and Iris Silver Mist are winter perfumes for example. I absolutely love Cuir d’Ange. I first wore my samples when it was launched (4 x 4ml and used the lot) in Rhodes. Wore it in the Greek heat and was just blown away. I have nearly finished my 100ml bottle and will definitely replace it. Although I wear it year round it is best in the summer. I wore a ton of Cedre Sambac again this year …. I do look forward to wearing different stuff in the winter. Freezing weather does affect my choices. I do not think I have ever tried the Iris Ukiyoè. But I will be in Vienna next week and will drop in. (Off to try the Coromandel Extrait ….. 😎). Fab post as ever. xxxx

    • Hey there Val. I remember you loving Cuir d’Ange and now I finally get it. Definitely FBW. Unfortunately Cedre Sambac aggravates my asthma. Have a blast in Vienna and let me know about the Coromandel Extrait. I am so eager to try that one. Miss you. Sandra xo

Some of my perfumes live in a certain season (just not going to choose Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess in January, unless we are heading to Florida…) but the majority of my collection is whenever it strikes my fancy. Today I’m wearing Tauerville Vanilla Flash, and it’s quite warm – I don’t usually do vanilla in the summer but it’s been a rough week and I needed the vanilla boost.

    • I like your approach MMKinPA. I hope your week gets better. Vanilla is a great comfort note for me as well. I will try Vanilla Flash when I can find it. Sounds good.

  6. I thought of something else that really is pertinent to this post. I got Serge Lutens Chergui one winter. It’s a “winter fragrance” after all. I wore it and HATED its guts. Hate. The following winter I tried it again. Hate. I mean, it’s a heavy spicy fragrance for winter, right? Well, last summer I was going to sell it. Before doing so, I sprayed it one last time. Love. Wore it this summer. Love. I smell the leather all over it. So, there’s an example of a “winter” that did better in summer! If I hadn’t tried it, I would have sold it.

  7. I often flip winter summer perfumes because they definitely wear different. Salome and APLS are much better in the heat. And Orange Sanguine or Assam of Indis in the depth of winter are such mood lifters.

  8. I definitely rotate perfumes according to the season. I might wear certain summer perfumes occasionally during winter time if I get too tired of cold temp, never the opposite. I don’t have a preferred house, since they all have different choices for every season. My favorite houses have always been Chanel and Hermes.

    • Hey Perfumelover67, Chanel and Hermes have a wonderful choice of perfumes. I also rotate simply due to space. Besides that, the bedroom gets awfully hot in the summer so I like to keep just a handful upstairs.

  9. I don’t strategically rotate fragrances by season, but I do find that I wear certain categories more in different seasons, maybe because of the gardening I do. I don’t wear citrusy scents often, but when I do, it’s mostly in the summertime. In the spring, I want to wear fresh or green florals (surprise!). I seem to lean toward roses and other florals through the summer and fall. I find that different iris scents are great in all seasons. I like warmer, richer, spicier scents in the winter, though I’ll always have florals in the rotation.

    • Hey there Old Herbaceous, Citrus and I just do not seem to work well together. You are right – there are many iris scents out there for year round. I find that vanillas and ambers come out frequently as of October.

  10. My feelings are similar to OH response above. I don’t rotate fragrances by season, but I do gravitate towards ambers and vanillas in the cooler months. Otherwise, I wear all of my fragrances in all seasons. I don’t have specific summer or hot weather perfumes.
    I really need to get my nose on Hermessence fragrances. The only Hermes I own are Caleche and recently Rouge. Myrrhe Eglantine sounds beautiful. I recently sampled Myrrhe essential oil and love it.

    • Hi Kathleen, I will learn from you all to just wear my fragrances when I want to. You smell amazing in Caleche, it is one of my all time favorite perfumes from my past. I will get my nose on the Rouge. Let me know what you think of Myrrhe Eglantine when you have the chance to sample it.
