Here at APJ we did a L’Occitane Divine Cream Review and Challenge, you can watch the progression in L’Occitane Divine Cream Challenge Week 1 and L’Occitane Divine Cream Challenge Week 2 where we challenged you all to grab a sample and see how it left your skin in 2 weeks. At the time L’Occitane also sent me a set of the first four four of their La Collection de Grasse fragrances to try and if I wanted to APJ could review them. Well, I WANTED TO! These fragrances are beautiful, wearable, spritz and go winners. Last week we did a L’Occitane La Collection de Grasse Review and Giveaway that L’Occitane were so happy with they sent me the THREE LATEST IN THE SERIES!!! Ambre & Santal by Karine Dubreuil 2013

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:

Base: Sandalwood, cedar, labdanum, vanilla

I can’t believe that Ambre & Santal is made for this price. It is as warm, rich and complex as some of the VERY expensive niche offerings. This is so good I’m keeping it. Sorry folks.

Right from the beginning you can already smell the vanilla and resins coated in a very light hint of herbaceous green and a tiny glitter of citrus. Fig leaf and rose? Maybe through the heart there is a leafiness but it is a bit less specific than fig, or maybe I’ve been spoilt by so many other fig releases at a much higher price point and the rose is such a bit player I can barely detect it. What does shine so bright about Ambre & Santal is its base, which is basically the whole life of the fragrance, it is the loveliest, creamy woods and resinous vanilla. Ambre & Santal sings on my skin as if they were made for each other. I repeat, I can’t believe this excellent price point. I smell so good and have been asked what I’m wearing a couple of times while I have sported it. Totally unisex and an excellent fragrance.

I don’t like to create gender boundaries but of the people I’ve tried it on only one woman said she would wear it but EVERY man was very impressed. Jin who usually wears Bottega Veneta original and Mona di Orio Oud asked if he could keep it. I had to do divert and grab to get it back or it would have been lost forever in his frag stash.

The opening is bright and fresh and very clean, this is what all those sport and blue fragrances wish they were. It is the richest and prettiest of that genre that I’ve yet smelled and I can definitely see it being a good gift for the guys. Cèdre & Oranger warms up very slightly through the heart but essentially stays green and woodsy to its still clean musk dry down. After about an hour Cèdre & Oranger is very close to the body, maintaining a just showered freshness without pushing itself far beyond your skin. Ideal for even the closest office work and later for drinks an extra spritz will freshen it, and you, up considerably and last till next morning, quietly clean.

Fleur d’Or & Acacia Luminous Body Oil only $45 at L’Occitane Australia

Fleur d’Or & Acacia is the latest offering from the L’Occitane La Collection de Grasse and I predict it being the biggest seller of them all. It is a very pretty Acacia/Mimosa fragrance that opens refreshingly citrus/green, invigorating and happy enough to make a grey sky blue and then the Acacia/Mimosa steps in and they all become that lovely waxy sweet crushed wattle flower green. Fleur d’Or & Acacia is sweet but not sugar sweet or vanilla sweet just sweet and pretty flowers over a sappy green-ness. Simple and wearable, a perfect mid season go to that will become a staple of your wardrobe and make an excellent gift. Surprisingly good longevity and though not a big fragrance has a lovely sheer penetration into your surrounds. The dry down is very easy wear, no surprises, but good solid fragrance that you’ll be happy to spritz and go in. BTW the Body oil above is also TO DIE FOR!!!

One of the jokes around this house is that seven out of ten things I spray on Jin he says, “Acacia” so today when I spritzed him I was hoping he would not say it but, damnit, he did.

When autumn arrives in the Pacific North West I head for my stash of vintage, spicy orientals. This fall I’ve been using a lot of Basile EDP (I prefer it to Opium), Lagerfeld KL (the perfume strength) and my new favorite spice with a twist, the Italian, musky oriental O`Driu Peety.

A Review and a Problem

I’m sure all the scent savvy APJs are well aware of the quirky marketing that pushed Peety, for a brief, smelly moment, to the forefront of the fragrance blog-o-sphere. Just in case you haven’t heard, Peety can be your very own personal fragrance (be-spoke, so to speak) simply by adding approximately 1ml of your very own pee to 49ml of Peety. Yes! That’s right! Perfumers have been doing this forever. What’s a little pee among friends compared to musk pods, whale poo (and goo), civet secretions and African stone?

After a brief flurry of Peety excitement, repulsion and even outrage, not much more has been said about Peety. To make up for that, here is my brief review of O`Driu Peety:

Before personalization Peety is definitely a classic, animalic oriental. On my skin the top notes are a quick blast of sweaty cinnamon, perhaps some clove, bitter orange and pink pepper. This spicy mélange dries to a luscious blend of jasmine, tobacco and rose eventually finishing with sandalwood, dark patchouli and oak moss or some sort of mossy lichen. Amber and tonka bean seem to float through the life of the composition, in varying degrees, from beginning to end. The sillage is moderate to strong and longevity at least eight hours on the skin and considerably more on clothing.

Peety by O`Driu Problem + GIVEAWAY

Here a question for you, a sort of “story problem”. I have never been employed as a lab rat. I’m not particularly good at math, hate measuring things and am notoriously cheap when it comes to buying fragrance. I would like to purchase a full bottle of Peety but I don’t want to add pee to more than 1ml of the scent. In order to personalize Peety it is necessary to add 10 drops of urine to 49 ml of fragrance. Keeping in mind that 1ml can contain from 10 to over 20 drops (depending on the dropper size), what approximate fraction of a drop of pee would I have to add to a 1ml decant to make O`Driu’s Peety my Peety?

Hello Natural Niche Nerds,

My friend Jane Cate from A Wing & A Prayer perfumes has sent me her two latest fragrances. They came in a glittering and sparkly blue post pack and when I opened the post pack up I could smell the most incredible, beguiling and glorious green scent. There was a perfume inside the pack so eager for me to smell it the second I opened the bag that some of it had got loose and was wafting its crackling crispness at me.

The scent was created for A Wing & A Prayer’s 5th anniversary of the perfume shop on Etsy. The launch date was Nov. 5th! That’s right folks, you read it here FIRST!

HOLLY, wOUD & VINE by A Wing and A Prayer 2013

Top: Mimosa, bitter orange, tomato leaf
Heart: Violet leaf, jasmine sambac, neroli
Base: Galbanum, oud, fir absolute

The crisp crackle of tomato leaves softened by citrus and flowers opens HOLLY, wOUD & VINE, it’s fun and green and ever so slightly waxy. There is even something of the dusting powder that my Mum used to put on the tomato plants. I am taken back to the earliest gardening days with my Mum and I in the garden, it’s absolutely uncanny how real it all seems, she is showing me how to prick the suckers out of the elbows of the tomato plants because too many branches means less tomatoes. I’m trying to tell her that it doesn’t make sense because more branches will mean more tomatoes but I am overuled and we get a bumper harvest that year, tomatoes in everything.

The tomato leaf stays quite well into the heart of HOLLY, wOUD & VINE but slowly the jasmine and galbanum take centre stage, it’s still fresh and crisp but now we get a sweeter green with a hint of skank. The green stays beautiful and fresh through the whole life of HOLLY, wOUD & VINE until the very last gasps at just under 3 hours where the oud dirties it up and makes HOLLY, wOUD & VINE a very naughty fragrance indeed. FABULOUS!!

The new bottles were created especially for A Wing & A Prayer by Michael Smith , who is the designer & owner of http://www.daydreemdesigns.etsy.com/ and they come in 2oz and 1oz etched bottles with the A Wing & A Prayer logo on both sides. The fragrance also still comes in the “regular” bottle with the label. Holly, wOUD & Vine is the first fragrance to be offered in the new bottle and slowly all stock will be in them, very exciting developments.

Oriental Rose by Marguerite Caro for Bourbon French Parfums

Bourbon French Parfums has been creating fragrances in New Orleans, LA since 1843. The firm’s history and the fragrances they offer have intrigued me for several years. In December of 2012 I finally placed an order, choosing one of their best sellers, Voodoo Love.

I found Voodoo Love to be a real time trip, a nostalgic fragrance that I knew I’d encountered many times before; a sort of déjà vu in a bottle! I love Voodoo Love but my true love from the Bourbon French line came as a free gift with purchase, BF’s new/old fragrance Oriental Rose.

Oriental Rose by Bourbon French Parfums

Have you ever tried a new scent and immediately knew you were home again, comfortable, relaxed and loved? My first experience with Oriental Rose was all that and more. The EDC opens with a warm, humid aura of buttery, rich and spicy rose. This rosy cloud does not change radically over time but slowly evolves into a milky, floral vanilla and eventually dries down to amber, sandalwood and musk wafting through a southern garden.

The way that the rose is presented in this fragrance reminds me of my favorite confection on the face of the earth, Golo Bol Bol Rose and Saffron Ice Cream! This ice cream is a traditional treat using a recipe that is supposed to be over 2,000 years old. Golo Bol Bol is what Oriental Rose would be (minus the saffron perhaps) if the fragrance were frozen and edible. Yes, it seems strange to compare a warm and humid (and not at all gourmand) scent to a frozen treat! But maybe not! Both the fragrance and the ice cream have the same rich, comforting indulgence at once nurturing and decadent.

Oriental Rose has an interesting back story too! A few years ago when members of the staff at Bourbon French were going through old records, they discovered the formula for Oriental Rose, created in the 1940’s by the firm’s third owner and first woman perfumer Marguerite Caro. For more of the interesting history of the Bourbon French Perfume Company and their creations check the website: Bourbon French Parfums. You’ll notice that the prices for the Oriental Rose fragrance are great.

Here is the info for Bourbon French and also for the Golo Bol Bol Ice Cream Shop in Westwood, Los Angeles, CA. I don’t go all the way to LA to get this rose and saffron ice cream and I certainly don’t make it myself (although I do have a recipe). The local persian/mediterranean market sells it in containers.
